Lazarus: context

The gospel reading for 5th Sunday in Lent, Lectionary Cycle A, is the account of the raising of Lazarus from the dead (John 11:1-45). The account follows the story of the healing of the man born blind (John 9:1-41). In the commentary on that gospel it was explained that the miracles (called “signs” / semeia) in the gospel according to John point beyond themselves to the divine – not just the…

The Resurrection of Christ

The resurrection of Jesus Christ stands at the centre of Christian theology. It is not treated in Scripture as a symbolic idea, a spiritual metaphor, or merely a comforting tradition. Rather, it is presented as a historical event in which Jesus of Nazareth, having been crucified and truly dead, was bodily raised by God on the third day. From the earliest days of the church, this event formed the…

First Fruits: A Celebration of Resurrection and Hope

✨ The Feast of First Fruits

The Feast of First Fruits is a beautiful, hope‑filled celebration woven into the heart of God’s redemptive story. It is a two‑day event that begins on the very next Sunday after the Feast of Unleavened Bread has begun (Leviticus 23:9–14). In ancient Israel, this was the day when the very first portion of the harvest was brought before the Lord—a joyful declaration…

Peerless in its craft, inimitable even as it imitates. An incredible film where I was sucked in not by character or story but by cinematic craft, constantly muttering, “Oh, come on” as new and monumental angles, zooms, cuts, reflections, tools, devices, shapes, and colours spread across my screen. It’s a love letter to and a fulfillment of cinema itself, but I’ll be damned if there’s not meaning to each pocket story as well - even if I didn’t quite grasp a majority of it while watching live, with poorly translated subtitles. (Wikipedia is a gift.) A staggering achievement and one that deserves a careful rewatch.

Resurrection felt very unique while still drawing very heavily and consciously on past cinema traditions because it’s a love letter to 20th century cinema and I’m sure I missed a loooot of references and influences but I was sitting there like wow! just like Nosferatu/The Golem/The Cabinet of Dr Caligari!!! Oh wait it’s a noir now! It’s giving Kwaidan!
