to be in love is to swim in doubt.  But this means something.

Seth doesn’t disagree “Yes, but not what you think.”
“Meaning will not cooperate with us.” They stare at their matchas in silence. The aperture widens, as if meaning is to be revealed just outside of frame

Drawing and the city

this drawing task is about understanding, knowing and registering the experience of living in cities

Understanding;

Commenting;
your drawings could symbolise the issues or features of living in the city - ie the overflowing bins from the bin strikes

Imagining;
Instead of just drawing a bin, reimagine the space like it’s a bin having tentacles out of it

Reportage;
Visual Journalism // done in situ // like a photographer with a camera

George Butler
Done reportage in conflict zones
//watched ted talk
Mentioned the impact of connection and interviewing whilst drawing, learning the stories as you’re drawing
More intimate

Olivier Kugler
Does initial sketches then takes it away and digitises it
Talks to individuals and their surroundings whilst having a conversation and recording the work
Sometimes writes the conversations and details over the drawings as part of the piece

Lizzy Stewart
Editorial for magazines
Does reportage sketches whilst travelling for the fun

Urban Sketchers
Global community of illustrators who draw the places they visit
Simone ridyard, architect and lecturer at MSoA
Favourites; tramlines, litterbins, postboxes, urban clutter, what’s infront of you not the beautiful things

laura oldfield ford
Zine - savage messiah
zine focused on different London postcodes and things like gentirification, surveillance etc

Overlays her drawings with things like graffiti she’s seen in the surroundings

Pinterest things

techniques;
keep it simple
don’t focus on detail at all
try different mediums

Suhita Shirodkar
Uses drawing/watercolours to document her city
focused on vintage shop signs
Began as a simple quest to find connection to her new home
ran into more questions than answers
why does history matter?
what do we lose when we lose the small stories?
How do we balance preservation and development?
Personal = political

Drawing is a language, one in which you can ask questions, draw and discover

Beer street and gin lane - William Hogarth 1751

Mapping the city
Many illustrators and other creatives have, over time, used their skills to produce maps of the city
Sometimes highly personal and sometimes revealing on a grander scale

mapping is an embodied experience carried out from a particular point of view

All maps are subjective

Oliver Jeffers
Commissioned by united airlines to create “one city five hours”
“how can you experience each city in just one hour”
Drew charming little maps about the main things you’d go to look at
Washington, Melbourne, paris

Paula Scher - famous graphic designer

Mapped things using data
Postcodes in Manhattan

The city is not a unified whole but a unity of fragmented perceptions - Ebru Yilmaz
The truth of what the city is, is made of all of our experiences

New Babylon by Constant Nieuwenhuys - obsessed with the imaginary city he’d made up
Would draw it and redraw it
A fully automated anti-capitalist city

Archigram
Imaginary cities designed by architects using their skills
IE walking cities
Instant city

Archigram archival project

Playful or political?

Guillaume Cornet
Isometric perspective
Elephants in hong kong
Corner house with rotring pen
New York

Kong Kee
Scifi animated film crowdfunded
“Dragon’s delusion”
Described as dramatic and explicit, the sharp shocking colours are “very hong kong”
