Just watched Renfield (2023) and scooted on over to ao3, only to find that our dear beloved archive contains NO Quincey P. Morris/Renfield works??

The amount of love I had for Renfield before is the same as I have now.

And I have no wish to send him away. Nor myself, for that matter—at least, not for the present.

I do not know him, nor that which you speak of. Who is ‘renfield steal-your-man menfield’, and who is my man?

After years of accidental forced syscovery which lead to amnesia, denial and paranoia cuz we weren’t ready for it. We’ve finally reached a year of confidence in our system and almost three of being aware of it. So I think I can have a space for us, without someone deleting everything.

We’re pretty open/active as a collective in our part of the slenderverse community (@starielluvsinternethorror is our sv blog however won’t be sharing the specific discord server atp as we’re quite personal there and I’m trying to be more conscious of our different boundaries), but other than that we remain very closeted.

I plan to continue therapy asap and hopefully get medically recognised so we can stop questioning. But besides that how we’ve determined we’re probably a system is our business alone. In coming back, I plan to be more private about our alter and other medical information, as well as avoid syscourse where possible.

I’m considering posting some comics, as we already enjoy making those for communication, but don’t get your hopes up haha. We’ve also changed our system name from Mosaic/Solar System to Renfield/Vampire Hunter System and will therefore using #vhs-comments instead of #sun-talks from now on.

Dracula straps him in, wordlessly tears his clothes to ribbons, and instructs him to face forward. But he makes sure that just within his field of vision, his servant can see one of his hands toying with the guillotine rope. Renfield whimpers and tries not to cry as he hears Dracula’s grunts of pleasure, sees him thumbing the rope experimentally. He imagines the blade slicing through his neck in an instant, imagines it over and over until he realizes just how hard the fantasy is making him. He moans softly through his tears, frustrated at the lack of contact, high on his own degradation, listening to every labored breath and guttural sound coming from his Master, anticipation building unbearably. He would be happy to die like this. It’s the last thought he has as he feels Dracula’s satisfaction, hot and wet, cover his back, and a chill breeze prickle the back of his neck as the blade plummets.

Don’t mind me, just thinking about Renfield again.

About how early he was introduced in the narrative and how many opportunities there were to save him.

About how hard he tried to save Mina.

About how Mina was the only one in the whole book to treat him like a person.

About how we will never truly, properly know the kind of person he was before the asylum and before meeting Dracula.

If you told me three of these blokes would go on to be in some of my favorite vampire movies, I wouldn’t have believed you…

(Okay, Edi made “Twilight” before this, but come on…)

Renfield (2023)

The servant of Dracula examines their relationship and rebels in favour of a dignified life of his own but his master does not approve.

There was a fair balance between horror and comedy that made it much more tolerable than many other Dracula adaptations. The lead actors were all strong and none of the minor cast let anything down given their roles. The protagonist cop was surprisingly effective considering police characters usually have little personality.

Compared to some of the British horror comedies, there wasn’t so much satire as there was a heavy reliance on slapstick or situational humour that was amusing but doesn’t often provoke actual laughter. Although the effects are passable, they’re also treated as part of the comedy at times which reduces the gravitas.

Some of the subtext gave it a new reading that was very effective and twisted the classic story to give it modern relevance. The themes such as domestic abuse in various contexts and police corruption were interesting and provided multiple directions in which threats could come from, therefore also providing many valid and excusable targets.

There were many characters but only three really stood out, even the secondary villains only had a few good lines and were basically discarded as soon as the main one took centre stage. Although much of the criminal was disposed of, the bribed police system was left very much in tact which means the protagonists could still be in a difficult situation since that’s who is likely to investigate the scene after the big bad is done with.

5/10 -Can’t find a better example of average-

-A gold-coloured gun is used against Dracula. The actor once played a character in Face/Off (1997) who used two gold guns.

-References to the “five families” are borrowed from The Godfather (1972).

-The Dracula teeth were 3D printed and apparently Nicholas Cage’s teeth had to be shaved down to fit them.

If you can’t find a red string of fate organically, stabbing someone in the back of the hand and consuming whatever comes out of the wound yourself is fine

Dr Seward’s account of Renfield in the asylum is basically

Eeheehee I woke up to the best email from ao3 today, I was like “oh bladefucker had a fun night with these!” And this message seriously made my day, thank you!! 🥰

I think often about finishing Halloween but I’ve completely lost my flow with that story 😭 it has a very particular tone that I struggle to re-capture, and the antics I’d planned for them seem very vanilla now that I’ve written so much more for these two? But in my heart I really really want to finish it - I want that particular version of Renfield to get what he wants! He’s so cringe and desperate and pathetic and horny, I think he just deserves the world (and maybe some bunny ears).

With the mob AU I *know* I’m never going to get around to writing the full like, novel that I have outlined 😅 but I can see myself writing more little scenes for them. They absolutely live in my brain rent-free, and New Jersey provides no shortage of inspiration for bleak, sleazy, destiny-tinted stories. And Renfield needs more guns in his mouth, always.

It is 4:00 in the morning or nearly 4:00 in the morning and I am haunted by the array of psychiatric tests that Jack will run on Renfield and the incredibly fucked up results that he will have to parse..

Please excuse how awful my handwriting is, it changes regularly and I couldn’t remember how to do this style. Now I’m thinking I should’ve just typed it.. I may repost this at some point with a few tweaks. I did quite enjoy drawing this, though!

I’m posting mostly for my own reference, but this is a great interview with Dracula scholar David J. Skal discussing his influences.

Post-canon renward in my mind is always something like
