The Oscars are upon us. Like tonight actually. I have watched all the movies from the major categories this year. I do every year. Eventually. But usually there are one or two I just can’t get to before the awards not because of time really but because of me dragging my feet and it feeling like homework at some point because sure, I love movies but Friday was Friday the 13th, the second one in two months, and what am I going to do? Watch a Scandinavian movie about a sad house instead of a Jason movie? Obviously not. Anyway, this year I hit them all. I wish I could have gotten to the Docs as well but they are often in other languages and sleepy me doesn’t do a great job with subtitles so I end up punting there.
Anyway, the Oscars are here so that should be a treat tonight and an exciting thing for this blog. They are of course the most major of all awards shows which means everyone on Earth hates them but that is always silly. It is important to note that they do not matter. They were created to stifle workers rights as Jack Warner realized movie people are so vein they’d give up basic rights if someone told them they were special. Which sounds like a joke but is not. They tend to skew towards a certain type of movie and are very self congratulatory. But that’s fine because it does get more eyes on movies that otherwise might not get eyes on them and there is always something worthy. Like, there are 10 Best Picture nominees and five Best Director nominees and it’s so rare for something to win Best Picture without winning Best Director but that’s ok cause it is five more movies that get attention that might not otherwise. Do I think F1 should be there? No, not really but that’s ok, we’ll all live and if it was just five we’d no doubt be missing some of the stranger ones on there which would be a shame. Anyway, I don’t pick winners cause I actually think ranking art is kind of dumb but I will give you my thoughts on the major categories. Best Picture I do think One Battle After Another will win and that’s fine because it’s quite good but I would be fine if Sinners, The Secret Agent, Sentimental Value, or Train Dreams won because I think they are all excellent movies with a lot to recommend them. I also think Marty Supreme is worthy I suppose but doesn’t stand out as much as those. Hamnet and Bugonia also have things to recommend them but i am not as high on as other people are. I do really hope Ryan Coogler wins for Best Director but we’ll see because I don’t see the Academy giving a movie about Vampires and Black people an Oscar but who knows. I do think Michael B Jordan had the most impressive acting performance of the year because he played twins but they were distinct people and that’s pretty cool. I think three of the five Best Actress nominees all deserve a trophy so it’s a shame only one gets it but Jessie Buckley, Rose Byrne, and Renate Reinsve gave amazing performances this year. Frankly, all five Supporting Actor nods gave killer performances but my heart goes to Delroy Lindo who was not just great but is always great and does not get the recognition he deserves. I’d be shocked if Amy Madigan doesn’t win for Supporting Actress but frankly all five again are special performances.
So there are my thoughts. I also encourage people to go watch the nominated shorts, they are usually easy to find and are often very good. Sometimes they aren’t but you know, short film like a short story is it’s own form of art and one of my favorite forms, it allows for a different type of story telling often with real emotional heft. I am posting Bella Thorne today cause she was at one of the pre-Oscars thing and looked lovely. The secret is everything this weekend is about the Oscars in some way. Either it’s a party that is officially related or unofficially because you can ride the coattails of the Oscars to get some attention and celebrities or it’s blatant counter programming for those cranky about the Oscars. This is one of those parties but now I can’t remember if it’s official or not. It doesn’t matter. Today I want to fuck Bella Thorne.
