S01E03: Nothing to See

The next stretch of the roadtrip! There are long stretches of road that are just nothing. Only sprawling fields of monoculture crops alternated by cattle pastures. No landmarks, no scenery, nothing to see. How long have you been driving for? How long do you still need to go? Did you hear something in the back? Did you check for anything before you left? How long until your destination? Perhaps there is… Something to see

I’m watching some gay video about Wizard of Oz and its connection to queer culture while I’m writing this btw. I’ve said ‘We’re not not in Kansas anymore’ a lot and I must admit at this point, I am unsure whether it truly is a Wizard of Oz reference or not. At least after this episode of AID I know one thing: there is nothing to see in Kansas, apart from the metal windmills that may be there!

I think this episode paints a beautiful picture of how eerie an abundance of mundanity can be. A long, boring stretch of road in itself is inoccuous, but at what point does its length become concerning? How can there be so much space without anything of note in it? When does the absence of recognizable features cross into the uncanny valley? And yet, these areas of seeming nothingness may contain nodes where people intersect, like a fastfood restaurant, or a shopping center, I personally find carpool parking lots in the middle of nowhere particularly uncanny tho

In sharp contrast to the uncanniness of the mundane, is the sudden interruption of a routine interupted. It’s always quite upsetting to hear something in the back of a car while driving, not being able to safely check whether everything is alright. Imagine how loud something must be to be able to hear it in a truck from the trailer? I’d think twice about checking whether something is there or not, whatever is making such noise can be dealt with in the distribution center or whatever.

Of course, the source of the noise is the Thistle Man toying with Keisha. Building up the fear by causing a racket but not showing himself immediately, then still kinda catching her off-guard. I think it’s interesting there wasn’t really anything regarding the Thisle Man in the second episode, it allowed him to slip from memory for a bit, then suddenly he’s back. What may be even more frightful than a threatening supernatural creature, is the police. I remember around the time this episode came out I became… more aware of police violence. When I heard the police sirens in the episode the first time I was wondering where it was gonna go, kind of afraid that it would turn out worse for Keisha. But the way the officer is portrayed kind of incompetent in this episode… that also tracks imo.

This episode ends on such a banger

I can’t go home. Home isn’t a place, home was a person. I can’t go home!

Always hits… home? Made me think a lot about what feeling at home means to me, what I even consider to be my “home.” The soundtrack of the episode lends itself to ruminating on this, can recommend it during an evening walk

Also, this is the only episode that mentions piss!

So, what all did we do today? 3/15/2026

We didn’t record yesterday’s log. Oops.

Today we got up and went to the gym! Mingi had a great work out, worked his back and forearms.

We came home and lounged around the house with Teddy and Moth. Teddy even made dinner! They made fish tacos tonight and they were delicious.

Moth and I smoked a joint outside and he’s getting pretty good at rolling them. The high was nice and mellowed us out nicely.

The poly has just been spending a lot of time together, it’s been a nice change of pace.

Later tonight we popped on vr chat and hung out with Whiskey and Dash. We had a really nice time just vibing with each other.

I don’t remember if anything else happened today but that’s what I can remember ☺️

Weiterlesen ->

S01E02: Alice

The road trip continues! Don’t you ever drive a long distance and pass a place you thought you’ve been to before? Some tang of deja vu with a hint of nostalgia for a place you’ve probably never been? Probably your imagination. Either way… Alice ISN’T Dead!?

So this episode actually confirms that Keisha has proof of Alice being alive, which the first one didn’t! After the first episode got released I had a theory that Alice would be revealed to have died anyway, but we’re not putting our wife in the freezer this time.

Still, whether someone has passed or not, it is possible to grieve their absence. And I think this episode captures the grieving process quite well - or at least the way it can go for some people, it’s not standardized of course. Every time Keisha returns to Charlatan, it’s in a different state of disarray: starting with normalcy, we go to dirt and isolation, then a destructive inferno, then an outpouring of melancholy.

While this is an apt metaphor for one’s emotional state in a period of mourning, I feel this can also be percieved as one’s perception of the outside world during the grieving process. A place one may frequent on a regular basis that feels safe and familiar, may some day feel neglected and isolating, or perhaps violent, or unbearably miserable. Regardless, the only way out is through - lest you get stuck, be it emotionally or physically. I think this episode has a nice way of framing Keisha looking back on her therapy sessions in a complementary fashion to her repetitive visits to Charlatan.

Beside an apt metaphor on multiple counts, after becoming a driver for a living I also found that I passed through places repeatedly when I wasn’t expecting to. Turns out your sense of direction can get wonky after making a lot of turns and multiple roads may lead to one crossing.

One thing that we also learn from this episode: Alice is messy as hell. Leaving scraps of paper and whatever all over the place alluding to her employment at Bay and Creek. Anywhere good businesses need transportation services. Fun name for a trucking company, quite evocative compared to the actual landscapes you’d probably have to drive over for the majority of your time. On one road trip we kept seeing these trucks labeled ‘BLUE WATER.’ That was it - no business information, no intended purpose, just tucks with BLUE WATER on the side in big, bold letters.

Some phrases I liked from this episode:

“I went to groups. I sat in circles and talked about you. That’s what we do now, right? As a civilization, we sit in a circle and we describe the shape of the monster that is devouring us. We hope, like a talisman, that our description will provide some shelter against it.

“There are a lot of different types of freedom. We talk about freedom the same way we talk about art, like it was a statement of quality rather than a description. “Art” doesn’t mean good or bad. Art just means art. It can be terrible and still be art. Freedom can be good or bad, too. There can be terrible freedom.”

“Am I going in circles? I know I’m not, all the other towns are passing along the way they say on the map! Charlatan isn’t on the map.

It’s on fire.”

The last one made me laugh so hard when I first heard the episode, I wasn’t sure what I was expecting after 'Charlatan isn’t on the map’ but it wasn’t it’s on fire. I also really like the music in this episode, every time Keisha returns to Charlatan it ramps up a little bit. I returned to this episode quite a few times. But eventually, it’s time to move on!

Recap: Kamen Rider Zeztz, Episode 26 – Case26: Gather

Don’t make my dream come true.

Baku takes Nem into a theater in the Dream World and is able to livestream the scene to the Command Closet where Minami, Fujimi-san and Nasuka can watch the recap episode as well. Nox walks onto the balcony to watch from above, but Baku knows he is there and also drops the bombshell onto Fujimi that the partner he’s searched for all this time was a former CODE…

Quick question, guys;

Do you want me to make these blog recaps every month, or are milestones (6 months, 1 year) better?

S01E01: Omelet

The start of a road trip - exciting. A long journey ahead, an undetermined ending awaiting that may or may not be satisfying, but that you can take satisfaction with either way. Until now, that is, since the road trip continues in less than a month! And the most exciting start of all: an egg.

There are many podcasts I am obsessed with, but rarely have I followed a series from the start until the end that sucked me into itself quite like Alice Isn’t Dead. Mostly I join along for the ride a few seasons in when a piece of media suddenly gains popularity amongst my tumblr mutuals, but for Alice Isn’t Dead I’ve been there for the entire trip. I found the premise particularly captivating: what’s going on with Alice? Who is this unnamed narrator? Who (or what) is the Thistle Man? I must admit I’ve relistened the first episode quite a few times in the two weeks before the release of the second one an embarrassing amount of times, but I’m killing cringe culture so I have no shame for things I like. I came up with so many theories that mostly got disproven and that I’ve forgotten anyway.

Another captivating element is the premise of a roadtrip. I always liked traveling long distances, many miles (or rather, kilomiters) passing through random towns and transitioning from one biome into another. Seeing weird things on the side of the road while passing by, capturing them only as a split-second memory, never to return to them again. The series inspired me to take some road trips of my own, though I’ve only recently gotten my own driver’s licence so I’ve mostly been the passenger princess. Ten years ago, I wouldn’t have expected to have gotten that - I always thought I would be too anxious a person to be safe behind the wheel. Now I’m actually working as a driver and making more kilometers weekly than I did on some trips. The series also has a lot of musings on anxiety that made me reflect on my own. What I think is fun, is that some folks I’ve told to listen to AID completly missed these musings. After listening I told one of them how much the series made me reflect on my issues with anxiety and they were like ‘oh yeah you must get a lot of anxiety from the horror.’ Completely flew over their head!

But I guess that’s also something that can be attributed to the writing. The series does (imo) a wonderful job of switching between these poetic musings about driving and distance, and the actual SPOOKY plot. If you’re only half paying attention the musings inbetween can be quite meditative, then suddenly there’s a guy being eaten alive by some guy who looks and smells like he’s spent a bit too long in the compost bin. Still, very pretty writing inbetween. Some bangers from this episode:

“Creepy. Gut creepy, like something gone wrong. Like a terrible crime. Looks like something out of a myth. I guess that’s where myths come from, when the real world looks like something out of a myth. Who am I at this point in my life to talk about unreality?”

“And so much of the night sky is nothing at all. It is an empty box. And like all emptiness, it is a mirror […] And isn’t it funny that the trees blot out the sky? Physical objects as shadows against the void. We are nothing if not absurd. We are nothing.”

“And now, here, the road between two places I’ve never heard of. […] unusual height, closer to the night sky than I am to any other human. A night sky that seems gorgeous and heartbreaking, even though it’s not. It’s not anything. It just isn’t.”

I think about these sometimes while driving. The area where I mostly drive is quite diverse in its spatial language, I may cross over from urban sprawl to the hills to the river to the farmland to the woods in a span of 20 minutes. Sometimes I have to drive through these backroads at night with not a single sign of civilization beside the road itself, and I may turn off my headlights for a second to truly appreciate the darkness. Where I am, I unfortunately don’t get to fully enjoy the night sky due to light polution. But plenty of little weird things along the road to pay attention to.

The Thistle man was a mystery to me as much as Alice was. The first episode leaves a lot to fill in; what exactly is this Thistle Man? I remember someone theorizing he was some undead ghoul, I filled in that there might be some sort of zombie apocalypse about to happen. I’m glad it didn’t, that was quite blasé at the time already. But one thing that I wasn’t sure of after this episode either: Isn’t Alice Dead? Not once is proof delivered in this episode that Alice was truly alive, so my head already went to Alice Is UNDEAD. That would’ve been lame.

Safe to say, after this episode my omelet consumption went up significantly. Love me a good egg. Thank you chicken for crossing the road!

So, what all did we do today? 3/11/2026

Today was a very sleepy morning, we didn’t get out of bed til nearly 2pm. We skipped going to the gym today, did some grocery shopping and even made a trip out to storage for some body washes and our old air fryer. Honestly forgot the thing was in there.

We got home, continued binge watching Joel’s Empire season 1. Heard from our Joel who was like “oh it’s not my source (life series) I don’t care” before leaving.

We actually got on cc with Gabe for a few hours and watched him play Phighting for a bit, that was nice.

We got off call with him and popped on vc to see what the gang was doing. Actually, InGenLabs was on vr with the rest of the group so it was nice to officially meet them outside of the Phrotting server.

Oh! Severe weather season is off to the races. We’ve experienced our first tornado warning of the year. Thankfully it was weak and didn’t come into our area and the remaining damaging winds were short lived.

We got off vc briefly when the warning went off before getting back online later. We mostly hung out, chatted before moving over to the record shop world. We hung out, listened to music and played pool in the basement. It was actually quite fun.

Because of the severe weather; I (Tommy) came up to front to comfort and soothe Xavier. We were wondering why we were in protector it big brother mode around ChiChi (Whiskey’s headmate) and I just recently announced my presence. So there’s that.

But yeah, that’s all we did today :]

This month (or so) on Total Drama Tumblr

For the first time in a while, we had five regular episodes between recaps!

This group of episodes saw the penultimate merge from 4 teams down to 2. The teams panicked as they realized that from here on in, if they don’t win, they’re on the chopping block.

It also saw the largest Final Marshmallows Poll in Total Drama Tumblr history. Only two players survived the initial campfire, with six marshmallows remaining. Emma ended up being the odd one out.

Which was heartbreaking for the Superteam, as they lost their leader after having already lost Izzy and Bridgette this session.

Will we see the immunity idol before the end of the game? Will the alliances cooperate? And when will the final merge happen? The only way to find out is to tune in, to the rest, of…

Total!

So, what all did we do today? 3/8/2026

I will be completely honest. I do not remember much of what happened today.

I recall us doing laundry, picking up groceries and going into work.

Tonight we worked from 8pm to 1:34am. Tonight we did the closing manager duties on our own with some guidance from Gerald. I think we are getting the hang of things. I would hope so considering we close the next few nights we work.

Tonight has been rather troublesome for our system.

We found out that Chara does not believe we are a system with very little to back up her claim. I have made a previous post about it so I will hold my tongue.

We popped in vr chat briefly and spoke with Dash and Whiskey regarding things. They plan to have a conversation about everything that has gone on. I am anxious to see how things play out.

I have nothing more to add. Goodnight.
