Reading Laterally!

The social media personality I chose for this assignment is Bobbi Althoff. She rose to fame in 2023, due to newfound fame and traction on her podcast titled “The Really Good Podcast”. She has actually been creating content since 2021, and gained a big community on TikTok. Like many people, I first discovered her in 2023 after she had Drake on her podcast and went extremely viral. She has a unique style of interviewing where she uses very dry humor to pry questions out of guest everyone wants the answers from. In addition, she also puts them in awkward situations and highlights sides of celebrities we have never seen before.

After researching her, I have a newfound respect seeing that she really doesn’t have any educational past on marketing or communications. She’s extremely good at networking, which allowed her to have so many big guests! She now has 8.2 million followers on TikTok, and 3.7 on instagram. She also has been very outspoken on political beliefs which is something I admire as well.

Reading Laterally-Expert or Crank?

As a woman, I’ve always been interested in women’s issues. Recently, Trump’s comments regarding the side effects of Tylenol on pregnant women and children have been a hot topic online. While reading the relevant tweets, this woman’s lengthy comment caught my attention. Her passionate reaction to US Senator Elizabeth Warren’s comments made me wonder: Is she an expert? Or simply someone with opinions on certain matters? According to the textbook’s “lateral reading” method, we can’t judge her based on this emotional tweet alone. We must step back and investigate her background through lateral reading.

I first investigated her account identity. I tried searching for “WakeBroad” or “@WakeBroad” on Google or Twitter. I looked at the account’s profile, historical tweets, and what other accounts followed or mentioned it. Unfortunately, the search results were all “wakebroad” (commercial). Clearly, it’s an anonymous account, despite the blue verification symbol. Her profile has a profile picture, but I doubt its authenticity. Her profile is typical sloganeering. She doesn’t mention any professional qualifications or affiliations.

Her tweets are almost entirely focused on specific political positions, primarily expressing anger, sarcasm, and spreading conspiracy theories, lacking rational, fact-based discussion. I can find no evidence that she is an expert in public health, medicine, political science, or any related fields (e.g., academic position, published research papers, or experience with reputable institutions).

Based on the applied evaluation criteria (process, goal, expertise),

Expertise: Very low or zero. There is no evidence of expertise on the topic discussed. Her comments are typical of an amateur’s perspective.

Process: None. Her tweets demonstrate no fact-checking, evidence citation, or rational argumentation. They are simply an outpouring of emotion and ideology.

Goal: Political advocacy and incitement, not education or public information.

Thus, I have some confidence that this woman is not an expert, but simply someone with a strongly held opinion.

The viral photo of 2025 was apparently taken by KissCam at a Coldplay concert.

*For any viral image, follow the core textbook process*:

1.Reverse image search: Find all online contexts where the image appears.

–where I found this first is in TIKTOK.

2.Backward sourcing: Filter search results to identify the earliest, original, and most localized sources, rather than reposted blogs or social media posts.

–The moment happened on July 16, 2025, at Coldplay’s concert at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Massachusetts. When the “fan cam” focused on a couple, they were caught in an embrace. When they saw themselves on the jumbo screen, the woman turned away to hide her face, and the man ducked completely out of view. Onstage, Coldplay frontman Chris Martin jokingly remarked, “Either they’re having an affair or they’re just very shy”. The clip quickly went viral on social media platforms like TikTok and X (formerly Twitter)

3.Horizontal sourcing: Assess the credibility of the original source (is it a reliable news organization, photo agency, or personal blog?).

–This photo was captured live by the official Coldplay team at the concert. Its credibility is extremely high.

4.Check date and context: Use time filters to determine if the image is being used in the wrong context.

–The event occurred during a Coldplay concert on July 16, 2025, in Boston.

5.Conclusion: Make a final judgment based on the original, most reliable source.

–Based on the above information, I can confirm that this photo is a trustworthy, authentic photo.

assignment 3

I decided to look at Clint’s Reptiles who is a reptile enthusiast on YouTube. He is pretty well known within the reptile community, but outside of that I don’t think many people know of him. His goal for his channel is to help viewers determine if a reptile is the right pet for them.

I did a quick google search and the first things that came up were his social media accounts and a website for his store front in Utah. He has around 500k followers between his YouTube and Instagram account. On his socials and his website, I immediately went to the about tab to see if I could find more information about his education. From his website I found out Clint has a PhD in Biology Education and a Masters in Evolutionary Ecology. From his education alone, it’s safe to say he knows what he’s talking about on his Youtube channel. In addition to Clint’s higher education, Clint has taught at both Utah Valley University and Brigham Young University. Teaching subjects such as genetics, evolution, nature of science, ecology, and organismal diversity. Clint started his YouTube channel in 2017 and has been active ever since. He also has a store in Utah where customers can interact with reptiles and learn more about them.

COM 301 Buzzsumo Assignment

We all know the wonderful joy of election time. Candidates sling the most outrageous stories out there and we eat them up. Are all those stories factual though? My most recent adventure in fact-checking brought me to a story about Dr. Oz who is in a heated race against John Fetterman for US senate. The article accuses Dr. Oz of killing puppies and other animals for medical research.

My search began on Buzzsumo.com using the words, “Oz puppies research”. Many articles popped up accusing the famed surgeon and TV show host of his involvement in the slaughter of puppies as well as other animals. It seems this isn’t really a new story, as the scandal was first exposed in 2004. Columbia University, where the research was conducted, was ordered to pay a $2,000 fine for violating the Animal Welfare Act. Later that year, they defended Dr. Oz as a top-notch researcher and doctor.

I continued my fact-checking journey by searching popular websites including factcheck.org and politifact.org, neither of these sites had any information on the Dr. Oz controversy. I took my search to Google.com and found articles in the Philadelphia Inquirer and a “fact check” article posted on people.com. Both articles concur, that while Dr. Oz was a principal investigator in the research studies, he wasn’t directly involved in the abuse or murder of the animals. The article also mentions that Dr. Oz wasn’t even mentioned in the case filed against Columbia University in 2004.

So is Dr. Oz a puppy killer as the Fetterman campaign would like you to believe? No, he isn’t, but he did have some involvement and perhaps should’ve been in closer contact during the research studies that were conducted so that the animals hadn’t been abused and treated inhumanely. Yet again I’ve learned how important it is to fact-check before believing any viral stories that I read on the internet.

Field Guide to Research Week of 9-28-22

The article I chose is Pastor in Viral Selfie Meme Says He Didn’t Know He Was Trending until His Daughter Informed Him. I first looked up on Google: “sites: pastor in viral selfie meme fake news” because I thought I could get the original meme or the photo with the exact wording that the guy said for his caption, but I had no luck. I found three other sources, and all the articles had different dates
https://www.tuko.co.ke/people/452456-pastor-viral-meme-says-he-didnt-know-until-daughter-showed-him/ had the date July 22, 2022
https://www.legit.ng/people/1467412-pastor-viral-selfie-meme-says-he-didnt-know-he-was-trending-daughter-informed-him/ The first one had the date April 27, 2022, and the last one is https://ke.opera.news/ke/en/religion/2e2291947f4d2d0bf0507838732837d7. Five months ago, meaning May 6, 2022. Did I find three articles with various dates, so which is ultimately the right article to go off? On the website, Ke.opera goes back to the first article I found and has the same Tuko website I went to earlier with the same piece. I want to note that we must go to the Turko website, which is not unique because, to reiterate, it has the same story. The viral story is not something to get too excited over since the family would not like to have any more media attention, which I understand. I would not want a loved one on the internet because “Pastor Nzau wasn’t happy, and his family and the entire PEFA church community are disappointed to see their pastor’s face photo trending for the wrong reasons.” I would not say it is harsh to a particular religion, but it bothers them, and I have no right to have it go another way. I am stuck in the fact-checking journey. I checked for previous work, including three articles. The original story is the first article; other people have said it is the original one because no one wants their pastor’s face on something for the internet to see. The only difference is that the other two are not the original, as they were released later. The first site had a lot of advertisements, so I believe it is the original, and the other article referred back to the first one as “read more about it.”

COM-301-185: Field Guide to Research Assignment

For the last assignment of this unit, our instructions were to find a viral story using Buzzsumo as a primary source. Essentially, we had to fact-check our way through the article to check for validity. Considering there are several stories about cancer, I had to look one up related to it. (Although the textbook included a cancer story, I decided to go with another one). After searching for a while, I came across this one named ‘Disturbing’: weedkiller ingredient tied to cancer found in 80% of US urine samples. Naturally, my curiosity was piqued, and I clicked on the article.

It led me to a page by the Guardian, posted on July 9th, 2022. In the article, Carey Gillam wrote about a study done by the CDC, “a controversial ingredient found in weedkillers including popular Roundup brand, present in samples” (Gillam, 2022). After perusing the journal, she references a bunch of other studies, including one based on a study from the University of California San Diego School of Medicine and a scientific paper by Environ Health about exposing humans to glyphosate.

So far, it sounds as though this article is legitimate. There are many references to trustworthy sources like the CDC, the National Library of Medicine, and UC San Diego Health, but what interested me the most was that the article is co-published with The New Lede, a journalism project of EWG (the Environmental Working Group).

For my sanity, I checked to see if they were legitimate sites, despite The New Lede and EWG being .org websites.

I followed the same method I did with previous websites by typing in “ewg.org -site:ewg.org” and “thenewlede.org -site:thenewlede.org.” Both results led me to their Twitter and Carey Gillam’s Facebook.

Week 2

A few weeks ago, this image circulated all over social media which appeared to be Harry Styles spitting on Chris Pine. After doing some digging, it was found to be untrue, and fans were making up rumors. The image was taken from a video, and people just assumed the worst. More recently, Harry Styles was touring and even made a joke about spitting on Chris Pine before getting on stage. Some of my sources include buzzfeednews, vanity fair, and bbc.

COM-301-185: Reading Laterally

Like many Americans, I had mixed feelings about President Biden’s tweet last week stating that the pandemic is over. Sure, the COVID guidelines we have now indicate that it is less prevalent than it was before. However, other health experts seem to say otherwise. Dr. Megan Ranney believes that “the pandemic is different…but over?! With 400 deaths a day?! I call malarkey” (2022). Her claims echoed in my head as I wondered if she was credible enough.

For context, here is the tweet:

I started perusing her profile and saw her tweets or retweets about COVID-19-related subjects or vaccines. Dr. Renney has various titles in her shape, such as Academic Dean of the Brown University School of Public Health, ER Doctor for Brown ER, the Director of Brown-Lifespan Center for Digital Health, and the Cofounder of AFFIRM at the Aspen Institute. She is an MD/Master of Public Health.

Searching her up on Google led me to her profile on Brown University’s page. Dr. Renney wrote 120 publications and was acknowledged for 21 awards - some from well-known medical schools like the American College of Emergency Physicians. Although most of her research revolves around adolescents’ mental health, she has researched topics like public health for emergency medicine. After digging more, I found an article from Brown University dated March 3, 2022, about Dr. Renney’s conference. In it, she talks about the effects of COVID and public health, how it affects health care workers and providers, and urges Americans to “think bigger and do more” (Borsa-Curran, 2022).

While I trust credible doctors like Dr. Renney, the CDC and WHO have more valuable and accurate information regarding COVID. I won’t discredit her for not being affiliated in that field, but it is one person amidst an entire organization.

Reading Laterally (Week of 9-21-22)

About a couple of days ago, an influencer/content creator or blogger, as she calls herself, dived into fall fashion and included her life to influence people to have a good fashion sense. The blogger’s name is Sonali Prabhu. She is located in Austin, Texas, and prides herself on her unique Amazon fashion pieces. I am guilty of mindlessly scrolling through TikTok and sending them to my boyfriend. TikTok is a valuable way of scrolling past the time. Her Amazon storefront helps a ton, too. She encourages her followers to go to her Amazon storefront for the best finds and as a way to be a micro-influencer. She not only follows the ever-changing trends on this app but does her makeup and even filmed her dinner party with a brand that collaborated with her. Sonali was pretty ecstatic to be doing this. On TikTok, she is known as @so_narly, and when I looked on Instagram at her name, it came up as the same username from TikTok. I dug further by going to Google to find my way around because even though she seems like the same person and her posts coincide with the posts on TikTok, I wanted to see if she has any background in being a fashion designer or has a good sense of style. The first website is her Instagram page.
https://www.instagram.com/so_narly/?hl=en
The second is her website, where she talks about her major and where she goes to school. Her age is a little off since she is 25, but current updates, such as photos of her recent dinner party, are accurate enough to believe she is the same person.
“I am 21 years old, and I am currently a senior majoring in Radio/ Television at The University of Central Florida.
I started blogging in early March 2015. Even though there are still many things to learn about the "blogging world,” I’m ready to take them on! I began social media presence when I created my first Youtube video in 2013. I have always had a passion for fashion and makeup. However, after receiving many comments about my outfits and beauty routine on my Instagram and Twitter– I decided to help others through Youtube videos! I soon realized that everyone has different platforms they prefer, either videos or textual content, so I decided to start blogging about what I love!“
https://sonarlylife.com/about/
Sonali Prabhu is a great human being and has beautiful work with all her photography skills. The third link is her LinkedIn, stating she is a college graduate from the University of Central Florida and currently lives in Austin, Texas. Prabhu is also a content creator at Landmark Properties, Inc. She is very creative in video, photography, and graphics. Even though she does not have a fashion education, she is dedicated to content creation, videography, photography, and freelancing photography, all of which give her great qualities to do great things. Though she does not have a degree in fashion, I do not believe anything less of what she promotes on her TikTok, though she does more videography because of her degree, as it comes naturally to her. I would have appreciated her going to a fashion designer school, but she does have other creative outlets.

Assignment #3: Read Laterally

The pandemic seems to be waning, right? Guidelines from the CDC have been getting less and less restrictive. The WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus was recently quoted as saying that the COVID pandemic is nearing the end. So when I saw the retweet posted above by @PhdEdgar, I wondered if he knew something that the CDC and WHO wasn’t sharing with the public. Who is @PhdEdgar and is he really a doctor?

https://twitter.com/PhdEdgar/with_replies

After scrolling through @PhdEdgar’s twitter feed, I saw quite a bit of information posted by him in relation to COVID. I decided to further investigate to see what kind of credentials this “PhD” has.

A simple google search pulled up information that verifies that yes, @PhdEdgar is in fact a PhD. His name, which he also lists on his Twitter feed, is Edgar Rivera Colon, he is a PhD of medical anthropology and lectures at Columbia SPS.

As I continued my search, I found that he is also a clinical professor of Medical Education at Keck School of Medicine. I decided to do another google search on his name along with the People’s CDC to see what results I may find.

An Op-Ed from The Guardian, which scores a 45 on the Interactive Media Bias Chart, reveals that Dr. Rivera is a member of the organization. There wasn’t much information on People’s CDC when I did a search with the syntax -site: I also searched for them on WHOIS and found that their domain information is private.

After my adventures in reading laterally on Dr. Rivera, even though he is a PhD, I’ve decided to put my trust and faith in the recommendations given by the CDC and the WHO. Although Edgar Colon Rivera is a PhD, the CDC and the WHO have a lot more validity with the team of experts that they utilize.

COM 301 - Reverse Image Search Assignment

Trying to find and fact-check viral images I didn’t already know was trickier than it seemed. However, I found one I’ve yet to see, the stingray viral photobomb of 2012. For this assignment, I did a similar research method for fact-checking articles, except I used it for pictures. The stingray photobomb photo appeared fake since you rarely hear about stingray stories, especially during a cruise. So, I proceeded to search for the photo’s origins.

I first found an article talking about the same viral image. Naturally, I clicked on it and searched for the name Kendall Harlan. It took me straight to the paragraph naming the three women in the picture, and it mentioned where this picture took place. So, I opened another tab and searched for all three women with the extra words stingray and the Cayman Islands. The search led to several articles with those titles, but I clicked on the New York Daily News - it had a close date to when they took the picture.

I read through the article and saw that after they took the picture, they posted it on Reddit, and “it went viral” (Walsh, 2012). So, Reddit was the next stop. I used the same terms for past searches and found the exact picture from 2012. To ensure there was no misleading information, I returned to the first article page, The New Yorker, and found out that Sarah and her friends also interviewed The Huffington Post about this endeavor. I clicked on the link, read through the entire article, and everything seemed to match up with the rest of what I found.

Assignment #2 Go Upstream

While searching for photos that might be doctored or possibly too bizarre to be true, I came across a photo on Twitter of a young Syrian boy sleeping next to his parents’ graves. Immediately my heart sank, “How sad is this?”, I thought to myself. This has to be real, right? What evil person would put something like this out there if it weren’t true?

I did a little digging. First I did a google image search. I added the words, “Syria boy sleeps parents grave” to the search bar. Well that was enough to pull up quite a few articles in relation to this photo.

First, I clicked on the above link, posted on the site: “Gulfnews.com” The article talks about how Twitter users have been using this photo along with the hashtag #saynotowar to take a stand against the conflict in the middle east. Seems like this really had some credibility, but I continued to click on a few more sites, which all came to the same conclusion: FAKE!

The real story behind the photo doesn’t even have anything to do with Syria. It was taken in Saudi Arabia by amateur photographer, Abdelaziz, who used his nephew for the shoot. He had posted it on Instagram, using it to portray a fictional scene. It was then taken by others on social media, and used for a whole different agenda.

Just a few minutes of investigating is all I needed to find out if this photo was real or fiction. Not only was I able to find out that the picture was a fake, but I was also able to trace it back to the photographer, as well as the backstory behind the real reason the photo was taken.

Week 2 Going Upstream for 9-14-22

https://www.ndtv.com/entertainment/pic-of-leonardo-dicaprio-and-gigi-hadid-goes-viral-amid-dating-rumours-3350816

image

While scrolling through my Facebook feed on Friday, September 16, I saw that former Hollywood star Leonardo DiCaprio and supermodel Gigi Hadid were seen together. At first, I thought it was a scandal to throw unwanted attention at DiCaprio since it has been a while (well, as least I have not seen him in any movie/television show recently). Someone took photos of the two together, one in front of the other, leaning over to talk into the other’s ear. When I clicked on the picture, I was brought to a link called: https://celebjabber.com/gigi-hadid-hit-the-nyfw-runway-amid-rumors-of-dating-leonardo-dicaprio/. I had to find the same image from my phone to the same Facebook link to be able to do this assignment correctly, and I was excited when I did. At first, I could not get a google search and ended up manually typing in “Leonardo DiCaprio and Gigi Hadid Viral Dating Rumors,” and only these two sites came up. I finally got my google image to work and proceeded to right-click on the mouse and press “google search image.” It brought me to another website: https://www.ndtv.com/entertainment/pic-of-leonardo-dicaprio-and-gigi-hadid-goes-viral-amid-dating-rumours-3350816. When I scrolled down to on NDTV’s website I noticed “See the viral photo here” and at the bottom of the image is “Image tweeted by @dailyleodicapri” and “Gigi Hadid and Leonardo DiCaprio pictured together. (courtesy:dailyleodicapri)”
After going to two more different websites: https://www.latestly.com/agency-news/entertainment-news-leonardo-dicaprio-and-gigi-hadids-cozy-picture-goes-viral-amid-dating-rumours-4217296.html
https://www.hotnewsupdates.com/leonardo-dicaprio-parties-with-pals-after-gigi-hadid-hang/
Both articles note that the viral photo comes from the Twitter account: @dailyleodicapri. I was having difficulty with this because I did not initially trust this account, but I felt a little more relaxed when two other articles included the Twitter handle.
