I’m in that phase of this doc program where I’m unmotivated, I don’t wanna do it, and I don’t care if it gets done. I’m literally calculating just how much of this I need to do in order to pass this single assignment 🥴

So I reached out to a former professor to ask for a letter of recommendation for PhD applications, and he replied enthusiastically but asked me to “write a recommendation letter for yourself (i.e., ‘you’ through your own eyes).”
Which I absolutely cannot do. I’m an incredibly humble, self-effacing Catholic, and I find this request to be completely humiliating. Every time I even think about writing and submitting such a thing to him, it brings tears to my eyes.
So this is where I’m at. My total inability to speak positively about myself and my achievements has already crushed my grad school dreams.
I spent my entire day reading for a class and then outlining a paper for said class but I shouldn’t have outlined the paper, I should have read for independent study so I got home and ate dinner and then had to read a whole book and do the write up and now its 1:45am and my advisor is going to know I turned that shit in at 1:11AM and she’s absolutely going to give me shit about it when we meet tomorrow, not bc she’s a dick but bc she cares but oh my god why am I like this

Academia is allowing yourself two full days off over spring break, not enjoying them because you’re too anxious about your workload, coming back only to realize you’re now profoundly behind on about five projects, crying at an email from your advisor, and then realizing that this is your life forever because you’re literally not equipped to do any other kind of work.
To those of you who ever applied for a phD, does your university ask for a motivational letter? Just in case it doesnt and you don’t know what that is: a motivational letter is a letter (well, duh) written to the university or to those who are avaluating your application explicaining why you are choosing their program. Mine does and it’s a pain in the ass to do! I HATE WRITING THIS THINGS!
oh crap you guys, I finally finished a draft of my first research paper. I just sent that sack of shit to my advisor, and so let’s hope he doesn’t just…blow it up and tell me to start over. BUT at least it’s something other than a blank page lolol
Life Lately
Ep. 00
Well, I ~sort of~ wanted to document and share a little about my life. And so I thought of a not so unique name for this series : Life Lately.
Not so long ago, I started my PhD journey and got overwhelmed. It could be my fault ~oops. So I want to explore other things that would help me stir away from becoming a total psycho. I became curious about film photography. As a mindful and always in the now - wannabe, I thought I could give it a shot. Not to become a pro (athough that could be awesome!) but to appreciate the things, people, places right now. To be grateful for everything and relive those times - may they be good or… challenging.
So here’s to my new adventure! ☺️
I got reminded of this song from the movie “13 going on 30″ (yes, go ahead, make fun). Since I started my PhD a couple years later than most, I always feel the need to go faster or catch up and there is a sense of urgency constantly creeping up behind me. This song is about getting what you want out of life. It’s about avoiding burnout. And it’s about how that thing that you feel the need to have as soon as possible will still be there when you are ready. It’ll wait for you.
You know what gives me hope? With the Moderna and Pfizer vaccines, it seems there’s an end in sight.
You know what doesn’t give me hope? My PhD research and when I’ll graduate.
Getting funding for a PhD program shouldn’t have to be difficult.
In India especially, if you don’t have a JRF (Junior Research Fellowship) or similar funding from government sponsored grants, it is pointless to pursue a PhD. I’ve seen so many of my friends struggle to lead a decent life on less than minimum wage. Higher education shouldn’t have to come with so many barriers.
