Minecraft Theory: The Phantom is an Extinct Species?
ALTDISCLAIMER: This theory relies on another popular Minecraft theory known as the “Ancient Builders Theory” for context. I definitely recommend that you look up that theory before reading this one to fully understand it.
A few years ago, I thought about where the phantoms could’ve come from and why they came to be, especially since that was a pretty common topic among Minecraft theorists. After having it roll around in my head for a few days, I think I ended up “putting the pieces” together and came to a rather dark conclusion about it…
[[MORE]]So, the concept of extinct mobs is canon thanks to the inclusion of the sniffer; the ancient mob that doesn’t spawn naturally and can only be obtained by finding a very rare egg and hatching it.

ALTI personally believe that the phantom is another example of one of these extinct mobs that can only come back in an undead form.
You know how it’s the only undead mob that doesn’t have a clear living counterpart, unlike literally every other undead mob in the game? Yeah, that’s because their living counterparts were completely wiped out.
Who wiped them out, you may ask? I think it would be the ancient builders, and my main piece of evidence for this is how they drop wing membranes that can be used to repair elytras.
ALTI believe that when Phantoms were still alive, they were a species of Amphithere (a dragon with no legs and a pair of wings) that once roamed the skies of the overworld. The ancient builders wanted to fly just like them as well.
ALTMy main piece of evidence for it formally being an amphithere dragon isn’t just in its basic body anatomy, but also the fact that in Dungeons, there’s a “friendly” version of this mob that’s oddly red in color.
ALTI’d argue that this might support my claim that this mob is technically an Amphithere dragon, since red is usually associated with dragons; and as we all know Red Dragons were supposed to be implemented in the game at some point.
I mean, really, they could’ve made the friendly phantom ANY color, and they chose the color that the non-ender dragons would’ve had? hm…
Anyways, out of innovation and curiosity, the ancient builders started hunting some of the Amphitheres (Phantoms) down. Once they gathered the wing membranes that they dropped and discovered that they could create artificial wings that they dubbed as “elytras” out of them, they only started hunting them down even more.
And since elytras were so high in demand due to how amazingly useful they were as a tool for travel and such, there was a great demand for them, which caused the ancient builders to literally hunt them to extinction to keep mass producing the elytras.
ALTThat is why Phantoms specifically target insomniac humans. It’s because while they want to take revenge on the humans for causing them to vanish from the overworld, they’re still wary of them for that same reason as well.
So they specifically target humans that haven’t slept in days, so that they can get them while they are in their most vulnerable state.
Or, alternatively they could also be targeting the night owl humans because when the ancient builders hunted them down, they specifically hunted them during the night time.
Perhaps they were one of those rare mobs that actually slept, like foxes, cats, and villagers, and the ancient builders took advantage of that. That’s why they’re hostile to humans that are very active at night in particular.
ALTAnd that concludes this post. This is just my theory for now until Mojang provides any further hints/info about the origins and background of this particular mob!
