like ‘canon’ is a fundamentally stupid idea in the first place, did not do what it was made to do, and got even DUMBER when applied to fandom because we already had CENTURIES to learn how much it DIDN’T WORK and yet some bozos have tried to use it anyway

So I just watched OSP’s Arch Madness video (and I participated in the bracket polls on the discord when that was going on) and I need to take a moment to speak my truth about the Gateway Arch. In the Arch Madness bracket in my heart, it would’ve won. Maybe I’m biased in that, because out of all the arches in the bracket, it’s the one I feel the most personal connection to and the one I’ve visited the greatest number of times, but it’s just SUCH a good arch.
First of all, it’s such a gorgeous arch. I know a lot of people hate on it for its aesthetics because it’s on the minimalist side of things, especially compared to a lot of arches, which tend to be quite ostentatious, but I think it’s quite beautiful in its simplicity. The overall shape of the arch (it’s called an inverted weighted catenary curve!) and the way that shape directs the eye up to the top of the arch, the gradual and subtle narrowing of the arch from the heavier bottom to the more delicate peak, the triangular shape of the arch’s structure and the sense of movement that the positioning of the three vertices creates especially combined with the arch’s narrowing, it’s just all so GOOD. Also, even though it’s not particularly decorated, it’s still eye-catching on account of the shininess of the arch, which catches the sunlight in a gorgeous way, and also the size of the arch, which, as the tallest structure in St. Louis, towers over everything around it.
And the size. Oh, the size. The Gateway Arch is Fucking Huge. If you have never been there, you do not understand how Big this arch is. But the thing is, despite how big it is, it doesn’t feel oversized or overwhelming; it feels exactly the right size for what it is. Compare this to the Arc de Triomphe, another arch in the bracket and another arch I’ve visited in person. The Arc de Triomphe is also Big—I would even go so far as to call it sluttily large. The big thing, though, is that it FEELS big. You see it and you’re like, “that’s huge”. It’s overwhelming in its size (which I suspect is intentional, but which I think makes it a bit much). The Gateway Arch, in contrast? It’s even bigger than the Arc de Triomphe, but it’s big in a graceful way that makes it feel exactly the right size even as a 630-foot-tall behemoth.
And associated with the size, the engineering of the arch is also fascinating and impressive. I don’t know a ton about engineering, but from what I understand from reading all the stuff in the museum at the arch, the engineering is crazy wild bonkers. Like, designing something like an arch at that scale that doesn’t blow over in the wind or collapse under its own weight takes some insane engineering, and it’s also HOLLOW and has an elevator inside to carry people up to the top.
And with regards to that elevator, it’s the only arch in the bracket that (to my knowledge) you can go inside of or up to the top of. And it is SO COOL to go up to the top of the arch. Since it’s the tallest structure in St. Louis (and also the tallest arch in the world, which I think should count for something when comparing it to other arches), when you go up to the top, you can look out and see the whole city, you can see so far in every direction, it’s impressive and gorgeous and dizzying and it’s an experience I 100% recommend doing it if you get the chance.
Obviously the arch isn’t perfect, yeah, it’s a representation of Manifest Destiny which is not a great ideology, but like, if we’re basing the rankings of the arches in terms of what they represent, most of the arches in the list are out of the bracket. A lot of the arches were built to commemorate things that were not great. Considering that the Gateway Arch lost to the Arch of Triumph in fucking North Korea, I don’t think the symbolism and ideology behind each arch matters that much in this competition.
Anyways yeah the Gateway Arch is amazing, beautiful, and an absolute feat of engineering, and I love it. Gateway Arch you will forever be the winner in my heart.
