Using one of my subs (does it matter which? No.) as a keyboard at the moment. It’s cute like this, enjoying my every little touch as I tap away its keys to get my words acrosss. Stupid little thing. Each letter and number feels slightly different, because they’re all different components of it. But each would make its hips buck into the air, if it had a real human body. Thankfully it doesn’t. That’d make it a bit more difficult to type.

Gladly!

Well-designed objects are very appealing to me as the junction of art and utility. Design is an inherent factor of any object’s creation, but things that are made well are also intentionally beautiful. I stopped and examined a stapler at work today because it was exciting looking. These moments are the zest of my life.

My own love of objects is plainly rooted in my love for efficient design, so that’s why I’ll spend so much time harping on about aesthetics. To be clear, my feelings on most of the items I encounter on the daily range anywhere from neutrality to disgust [due to poor design or blatant symbols of consumerism or both]. But pleasingly designed objects are an obsession of mine.

To preface, I enjoy a variety of themes and aesthetics, and I think every object, ensemble and environment tells a story. That’s the real fun of it! Here is the basement of some ancient refrigerator. It was eye-catching so I stopped to snap a pic. I like to consider how many kitchens a refrigerator has seen. Does it still work?

When I plugged in my old Electrolux vacuum and it whirred to life, I was ecstatic. This thing is considerably before my time. It’s mundane, purely functional in purpose, not particularly glamorous. But it was designed with such care and it’s made to last. That’s massively significant to me.

Staplers are a particular weakness of mine. Look how much variety and so full of personality. Nothing excites me more than seeing how an artist’s vision shines through clearly in the finished product! And this is just a simple tool for stapling paper together! But why shouldn’t it be beautiful?

Okay, now the really fun part. I love objects that imitate human life to any degree. Mannequins, dolls, puppets, statues. My favorite things in the world are the automatons which imitate living motion more perfectly than any human being. It’s mesmerizing to watch Nancy sew and cross her legs. Jaquet-Droz’s Musician has simulated breathing. Look at Pierre Iman’s mannequins: they’re lifelike but frozen, and the effect is very intense and energizing to me. Not robotic like the examples I linked, but the imitation of humanity is still present, and that’s the main draw.

I think this reflection of humanity is present in all design, even the abstract and utilitarian. A nutcracker resembles a man, but it also represents human consideration and preference, and I can’t help but see the effort and thought that goes into these items. Good design is subjective, and I have honed my tastes and continue to broaden my horizons, but it is so intoxicating to encounter an object that was designed in such a way as to fit my vision of perfection. It makes me feel connected to humanity and it inspires me to put more things out there that represent my vision. Everything can be beautiful. It often is. I love my cocktail shaker. The End

One of my favorite aspects of a robot or living object story is when the object aspires to Be That Object. The wish to be human trope is also cool, but there’s something especially delicious to me about an object that desires to fulfill its purpose. Content in its identity

do you (want to) fuck your objects?

yes, traditionally

yes, non-traditionally

no, my attraction/attachment to objects is non-sexual

not objectum, im here for vibes

See Results

“traditionally” = humping your object, jerking off with it, fingering its holes, etc

“non-traditionally” = taking apart and cleaning out a machine, playing an instrument, writing in a journal, etc and considering this a form of sex/intimacy

if you do multiple, pick whatever you do most?
