Warum Eiche wieder boomt

Calling it now that Norm and his manager buddies will find a way to repair or bring back a working water chip for Vault 32 & 33, but Chett (who will fall into the position of Overseer because I’m guessing Steph gets deposed) will hit Norm with ‘you’re a hero… and you have to leave.’

i called ron perlman being the super mutant, i called the legion civil war, i called barb not being inherently evil, im calling this

I don’t have time to get involved in the Fallout ship-wars right now because my favorite characters have turned out to be Chett and Claudia and I’m so stressed out because if anything happens to them it’s going to be the last two episodes of Game of Thrones all over again for me and I don’t think I can handle that.

I just really love them so much. I want Chett, Claudia and Norm to travel the wasteland solving mysteries in a van or something.

Honestly what’s so fun about Phineas and ferb is yes the main characters are incredible, but every single side character is so well rounded and fleshed out that you can pop them in to a starring role in an episode and they’ll hold it up. I really love how season 5 has been spotlighting characters like Stacy, carl, and norm for this very reason, and i can only hope the future seasons/movie(s?) do it more.

I lost my pencil case and couldn’t for the life of me remember where any other art supply was. Eventually I did find the case.

Norm angerly growls, “Good going jeopardizing the whole place by misplacing your art supplies. All you ever use are pencils! WTF?!”

Something I do like about the vending machines - with how their role is with Norm, they’re actually a surprisingly effective allegory for radicalisation into extremist ideologies.

Wait, POLITICS, in PHINEAS AND FERB???? Look, if you pay attention to what I say, you know I like to avoid sugarcoating anything I say. If I see something, I’m going to be honest about it.

But think about it: Norm feels neglected by his family, he wants especially his father to recognise him as his son, but Doof keeps failing to do that. The suddenly, this new movement comes along, and a charismatic, seductive leader convinces Norm to join them.

Norm is convinced because they show up tell him “hey, we know how you feel”, and convince him they have the same struggle. IDK if I’d go as far as to describe what the VMs do as love bombing, but it’s close enough to recognise that.

And of course, what makes Norm leave this new group and return to his family is Doof really insisting that yes, he really does care, and that he regrets how he treated Norm. You could see a cult allegory here too, for that matter (maybe it works better even IDK lol).

I just focus on political radicalisation because I feel like that’s especially relevant now, and I wouldn’t be surprised if this was something on the minds of the writers when they conceived this episode.

Ok, so we got

  • Jeremy telling Candace he loves her
  • Isabella asking Candace for “big girl” advice
  • Two Baljeets
  • Candace saying she busts the boys cause some of what they do is dangerous and she doesn’t want them to get hurt
  • Norm backstory
  • Norm song
  • Doof saying Perry is family
  • Doof saying he appreciates/loves Norm and is mean because he is the most dependable person he has
  • Freshly divorced Doof and little Vanessa

Probably way more but omg that was amazing I am speechless I love this show so much these episodes were incredible and I’ve loved this season so much and am so glad we got it and are getting even more

One thing about Vendpocalypse I’m kind of mixed on that is definitely a me specific thing - I think it’s a shame that a Dwampy show has yet again created a compelling, arguably sympathetic villain only to just have them all destroyed or defeated like they never mattered

I will say I like what we got more than what happened with the Pistachions, with Super Super Big Doctor, maybe it’s at least on par with Mordros, it’s overall executed better than the first two, but still, it’s a pattern I can’t help but be tired of.

The reason I like it more here is that despite their sentience, the vending machines still seemed very determined by specific programming causing the traits they have, vs the Pistachions having weird humanising moments or SSBD turning good only to immediately get vored by a plant

Like, with the Pistachions, they even raise the idea of coexistence, only to just have them all murdered. Here, the VMs are still humanised somewhat, and I do appreciate that, it’s just kind of a shame that they were arguably in a similar position to Norm, but Norm is the one who’s allowed to keep being around because we and the characters like him, while the VMs are just staying bad forever. IDK, this is definitely a me thing, maybe I’m too Steven Universe pilled, but I do kind of wonder if adding that extra depth ironically hurts them.

All that being said, I do actually think they still work overall, and for the story we have, they serve their purpose. I just think there’s arguably an extra layer of tragedy here that isn’t something the show is interested in exploring, because PnF doesn’t really do that stuff.

By that, I mean that I think there’s actually an argument you could make that the reason the VMs first instinct was to turn to creating an uprising and overthrowing and killing humans was them taking on aspects of their creator - Doofenshmirtz.

Even as he’s grown less “evil”, him engaging with being that is still born out of being spat out and rejected by the world, and taking out his vendettas, big or small, on the world. And ironically, as much as Doof tries to right the wrongs of eg his parents with Vanessa, he can’t help but inflict these same problems on things he created, ie Norm, and now the Vending Machines. I’ve kind of come to see Doof as a creator who despite seeming incompetent, he actually wields a frightening amount of power, and is kind of irresponsible with it.

Norm was originally created just to do an evil scheme (…or was made to comfort Doof in a divorce? IDK, I’ll get to the retcon), and the Vending Machines were the same. Doof just made them sentient because he found it convenient for him, not realising the consequences of that.

Even if you follow the new backstory, this still fits; Doof made Norm not just to assist his evil schemes, but if he indeed made him years earlier, he built him just to fill a void left by Vanessa having split custody.

But as Doof got into doing evil, and Vanessa proved she would indeed be around, regardless of whatever the original intent was, Doof started to treat Norm as more and more of just an object, a machine that exists to serve him.

This also explains why Doof neglects Norm so easily - he was never a person to Doof, just an object to fill emotional voids and serve him. I mean, arguably it was there originally, Norm being a robot meaning he’s not seen as human and thus a “real” son, but yeah.

Norm can’t help but see his creator as his father, and now with this retroactive addition to his story, that arguably explains even more why Norm sees Doof as a father so much. Because Doof made him like he was meant to be a son, but wasn’t.

Honestly, Doof kind of is taking on a Frankenstein role - creating life just because he can, and not realising the consequences of creating that new life entails. Hence how I describe Doof as like an irresponsible creator, or even god (seriously, his inators are OP AF).

And as I’ve said, Doof kind of does this many times. He’s done it more than once - I mentioned in my reactions that this episode has many parallels to Pharmacists - yet another is that Doof creates new life, and he’s unaware of how big the consequences of that is.

Doof does it again with the vending machines. He creates new machines that are sentient just to make his plan easier, but that has unforseen consequences. And far more than Pharmacists, more like Norm as the ep shows, the VMs recognise their purpose and feel dejected.

So basically… kind of a downer that PnF has to be what it is and doesn’t allow space for the vending machines to be humanised further. Still think they work for the story they’re in, and I’ll get to why in another post, but hey, this is what I get for overthinking cartoons lol
