Maxie the Goose has a pretty cool “rags to riches” story.
She went from being a giant art project in a big city to a beloved small-town hero.
The History of Maxie
• The Idea (1950s): Sumner, Missouri, has been the “Wild Goose Capital of the World” since 1955 because over 100,000 geese stop there every winter.
The town wanted a way to show off their title.
• The Creation (1974): An artist named David Jackson built Maxie in Kansas City. He used steel and fiberglass and gave her bowling balls for eyes.
• The Move (1976): Since she weighs 4,000 pounds and has a 65-foot wingspan, she couldn’t just be towed. A military-style helicopter actually flew her from the city into Sumner’s community park!
• The Name: Her name comes from the scientific name for the Giant Canada Goose: Branta canadensis maxima.
Up to Date (2026 Status)
Maxie is currently in the best shape she’s been in for decades.
Here is what is happening with her right now:
• The Big Restoration: A few years ago, Maxie was starting to crack and fade.
The artist’s daughters and the townspeople teamed up and raised over $70,000 to save her.
They patched her fiberglass “skin,” gave her a fresh coat of paint, and fixed the cables that hold her wings up.
• She Still “Flies”: One of the coolest things about Maxie is her base.
It has a special pivot that allows her to turn into the wind. Even today, if the wind is strong, she will rotate slightly like she’s getting ready to take off.
• The Festival Lives On: The Sumner Wild Goose Festival is still held every October.
It’s the best time to visit because the whole town (which has fewer than 100 people!) throws a huge party with parades and food right under Maxie’s wings.
• Movie Star: She’s even famous on screen! She was featured in a 2017 movie called Different Flowers and continues to be a top spot for travel bloggers and TikTokers in 2026.
Maxie remains the World’s Largest Goose, standing 40 feet tall as a symbol of small-town pride.
