Meadow

He wondered, did the word Meadow also mean Morris? He asked AI to see if it did. This is the response he learned from.

Short answer: no — Morris does not mean “meadow.”

🌿 What Morris Actually Means

  1. Latin → Maurice → Morris: “dark / Moorish”
Most English and Welsh forms of Morris come from the Latin Mauritius, derived from Maurus, meaning “Moorish” or “dark‑skinned.”
  2. Irish Norman origin: “of the marsh”
In Ireland, Morris often comes from Norman families named de Marisco / de Mareys, literally “of the marsh.”
  3. Welsh forms: linked to Maurice, not meadows
Welsh versions (Meurig → Morus/Morys) still trace back to Mauritius — again meaning “dark,” not anything to do with fields or meadows.

🌾 So where does “meadow” come in?

It doesn’t — at least not in any documented etymology of Morris.
Names meaning “meadow” usually come from Old English roots like lēah (“clearing, meadow”) found in surnames such as Lee, Leigh, Meadows, Medley, Mead, etc.

So there, he had it, he was now in full control of everything understandable that related to the name meadow. He really couldn’t equate how fortune he really was. It had taken him little more than a few minutes to gain this appreciation. He was so happy to be alive and learning all of these wonderous things about words and their meanings.

Meadow: Don’t worry, I’m fine.
Wheeler: You got stabbed, Meadow! You’re not “fine”!
Meadow: I’ve been stabbed before!
Wheeler: It’s not like you build up an immunity to stab wounds!

More updates from my recent visit to Whitchurch and surrounding area. This time I’m sharing some photos from Danson’s Wood. Visiting Danson’s Wood was a strange time-travelling experience. The territory sits between the canal and the Whitchurch bypass and you can find it if you walk around 15-20 minutes along the canal towpath from Grindley Brook in the direction of Whitchurch. You can get to Danson’s Wood using a small footbridge over the canal. I’m positing images of the wood as it currently is because I have vivid memories of the place when it was wildflower meadow which had been planted with saplings by the Woodland Trust. Over the course of around 20 years those saplings have grown into trees. The wood would probably not be especially notable to me if I didn’t have the sharply contrasting images of the two time periods in my mind. There is a very small pond in the middle of the wood. When I last saw it it was surrounded by meadow and scrub. Now it’s surrounded by young and semi-mature trees.

Whoever has ears, let them hear what the Spirit says to the churches. To the one who is victorious, I will give the right to eat from the tree of life, which is in the paradise of God.
