We’re in the middle of Hanukkah and it’s nearly Yule and Christmas. With all the social functions and illnesses going around, taking care of yourself is all the more important. If you’re already under the weather (like myself), rest up, take your vitamins, drink lots of fluids, mask when you need to go out, etc. If you’re not sick at the moment, be mindful of how you navigate the world this week to lessen your chances of illness. Spreading holiday cheer is the goal, not spreading viruses.

In either case, entering the winter season means making sure you’re being kind to your body. There are a lot of cultural messages about food and bodies that can make this time of year extra stressful. Don’t listen to the narratives. Listen to your body. Eat what feels good and enough for you, and don’t let other people’s judgments get to you. Move and rest in the ways that feel good to you. It is natural for our bodies to want a little extra fat to get through the cold season, so don’t beat yourself up over gaining some weight. What’s most important is getting through this season intact and as healthy as possible.

Prayer Poem to Odin and the Blessings of Mannaz

Allfather Odin, wanderer wise,
Whose one-eyed gaze sees through all guise,
I call to you through thought and breath,
Guide me past illusion, fear, and death.

Mannaz shines, a mirror bright—
The Self reflected in all sight.
It hums of kin and humankind,
Of minds that seek, of truths that bind.

Odin, teacher, fierce and deep,
Who traded eye for wisdom’s keep,
Grant me the grace to truly know
The self I am, the self I grow.

Let Mannaz bless my waking thought,
With insight hard and dearly bought.
Let it reveal where ego lies,
And open me to others’ cries.

For every stranger is my kin,
Each soul without, reflects within.
In web of wyrd and woven thread,
I walk where mortal thoughts have led.

Teach me the strength of humble pride,
To stand in truth and not to hide.
To shape my fate with heart and mind,
Yet leave no soul or friend behind.

Odin, whose breath gave mankind life,
Whose runes were carved through pain and strife—
Bless me with Mannaz’ sacred key,
To be my fullest, truest me.

By blood, by bone, by ash, by flame,
In your great knowing, I speak my name.
So may it echo, near and far—
A self made whole beneath your star.

𓃠 Hail Odin.
ᛗ Hail the rune Mannaz.
🜁 May I know myself, and know all.

Even small moments of stillness allow you to assess what your body is feeling and experiencing. Stiff muscles? Move around, stretch, maybe get a massage. Tummy rumbly? Eat some food, get in some gas releasing postures, increase your fiber intake. Feet hurt? Get some new shoes or insoles and get off those puppies! Getting stinky? Take a shower or a bath. (Hell, jump in a pool or the ocean if it suits you.) Feeling the weight of emotions in your chest? Ask for a hug or snuggle with a stuffy. Burnout giving you chronic tension and headaches? Take a break from The Work and do something that rejuvenates you.

It all sounds pretty intuitive and obvious laid out like that, but something might be preventing you from really checking in with your body and/or from getting what you hear your body saying it needs. Practice mindfulness and check in with yourself. Practice recognizing the signals your body sends when it needs something, and then *get it what it needs*. As a neurodivergent person, I understand this particular kind of task can be challenging. Don’t beat yourself up for not listening to your body sooner or for giving it something you thought would be helpful but ultimately wasn’t. Give yourself some grace and do what you can as much as you can. Learn from every experience. You have everything to gain by being in touch with and taking care of yourself.

Rune Meditation - Mannaz

“Who are you? What do you surround yourself with? What does your body tell you? Who are you behind the mask? Who are you when no one’s looking? Are you anyone when no one’s looking?”

Understanding yourself and who you truly are is a significant part of Mannaz. Its is a part of life. It is a part of each individual’s experience. Your psyche, your form, some of your soul pieces or spirit (depending on your personal understanding of such things) that are all uniquely you make up “your” Mannaz.

I saw this as the core reminders and essence of mannaz: who you are within yourself as a distinct person experiencing this life in this realm in this body right now. It invites all of those questions above to be asked and answered, and it reminds us of those answers when we need that reminder. When it comes to rune magic, Mannaz represents us.

Hugin and Munin

Each dawn take their flight

Earth’s fields over.

I fear me for Huginn,

Lest he come not back,

But much more for Muninn

My rune for tonight is MANNAZ.

A reminder to stay modest. Don’t focus so much on results right now. Know stillness. Try not to do anything in excess. Maintain balance.

This rune acknowledges my potential. I am also passing whatever tests I was given.

In my relationships, I need to start considering what other people might want and need more often. I need to express more care to others.

As far as love, a few new friendships and relationships are ahead. If someone invites me out for a meal or whatever, it’s wise to accept.
