SIGH.
[[MORE]]Trying to start my very first macrame project. I want to make one of these, but for 8 hats instead of 2:
Yesterday I laid out all my strings at the right length (recommended project length x4), but they were so tangled by the time I’d knotted them to the base ring that I had to walk away. This process took 3 hours because I wasn’t winding my yarn into balls as I went, and I kept losing track of my lengths.
Just sat down to see if I could salvage the snarl, but Pheebs gnawed two of the string lengths off the ring while I slept. So I guess it’s time to start over. This time I’ll tape a bowl to the table on top of my progress before I take a break, since A Certain Princess can’t Control Herself…
Anyway I’m 25% through setting up (again).

I’m teaching a class on macramé to my local Society For Creative Anachronism (SCA) shire and figured I’d share some historical bullet points here.
A Brief History Of Macrame
- The first recorded use of macramé was by the Ancient Assyrians, as old as 900 BC! They used this method to tie off tapestries.
- The word ‘macramé’ is derived from the Arabic word مكرمية (mikrama) which can refer to a towel, veil, or ornamental fringe.
- After the Moorish conquest, the art was taken to Spain, then to Italy (where it became popular under the name ‘punto a groppo’), and then spread through Europe.
- It was introduced into England at the court of Mary II in the late 17th century. Queen Mary taught the art of macramé to her ladies-in-waiting.
