It’s that time of year again. The Live Oaks in our yards are dropping leaves like crazy.

They’re almost bare!

I’m already seeing new growth and pretty soon the catkins will appear, coating everything with a dusting of pollen before they fall to the ground.

We own a large live oak tree in our Charleston, South Carolina yard that reaches into the neighbors’ yard and just brushes their garage. It used to bother us — all that abundant growth and inconvenience — but now, our California yard struggles even to grow grass through concrete topsoil hardened in the brutal high desert sun, and we spend six months of our year here craving shade and softness. What I wouldn’t give on those days to move that tree here, to have that kind of inconvenience a chaotic, over-abundant life creates.
