I Saw The Tv Glow
I cannot express enough the strange feelings that this movie brought me. It’s well over an hour long, and yet it feels so short. Like not even twenty minutes long.
It’s insane how a movie can do that.
But the metaphors that I personally interpreted were crazy, like.. Jesus fuck.
What do you mean we have the codependency of being the only two of your kind in such a small area, of bonding. What do you mean we see one of them existing in such a complexity, and then the other unable to follow through, again and again.
There is such a fixation on the death of ones self.
Maddy for example, when she says, “I can’t stay here, I’ll die, I know it.”, She’s not fully talking about an abusive step dad, even if she herself doesn’t understand it. She’s addressing something they both know all too well: To stay here, she will die to herself, she will never, ever be who she knows she is, she will be swallowed whole by her very hometown.
And she gets out. She’s mangled, mentally unwell, but she got out, and on some way, she’s alive to herself, she is still finding place to be herself, wedges to cram her foot, dragging herself fully up that mountain.
And Owen? He dies. He, in a way, always knew he would. He knew, not physically, that he would die to himself over and over before he ever came to terms with anything.
In the same way Pink opaque dies to itself, so does he.
He looks at himself, and it’s a caricature of who he really. And it’s heartbreaking to watch as he cuts himself open, revealing the tv, his identity, her sense of self, that’s nestled there, so close to the heart, should he just.. do it.
But he never will. Because he’s already dead.

the definition of lesbianism i base myself on to say this is: attraction between two non-men.
so as long as the person identifies themselves as non male and they feel a sapphic attraction to other non men/a connection to lesbianism and femininity, they are free to call themselves a lesboy.
