I don’t know who needs to hear this but there’s a secret fourth option for the not-dirty-enough clothes you keep on your chair :

Airing them out, if you have a clothesline just hang those bad boys on it and check on them when you remember they exist, (before it rains if you’re lucky).

If they’re still not clean enough, they failed the test, they’re not in the middle ground anymore, you procrastinated as much as you could and now they go in the wash. They were going to do that anyway after staying too long on the chair, you just gave them an extra chance to earn Wardrobe Privileges

Your chair is free (it’s not. My chair is still always fully booked. But there IS a secret fourth option)

Laundry・1-2

Laundry is less about removing stains
and more like a ritual for ending the day.
Even if some marks remain,
the wind makes it lighter, little by little.
It’s not just clothes that dry—maybe feelings too.

I’m mesmerised by the washing machine door. The colourful clothing inside is creating concentric circles on the highest spin speed. It’s so beautiful. It doesn’t last long, though. As the spin cycle slows down, the circles disappear and clothing sloshing around becomes discernible again.

Then the spin changes direction, just for a little bit, before going counterclockwise again. I wait patiently for the circles to come back, brushing my teeth in the meantime, but it takes a while.

And then my mind wanders to the physics of washing machine spin cycles and who decided the mechanics of them. They seem so random. Four seconds in one direction, then ten in another. Speeding up, slowing down. Is this all based on scientific evidence? Have people experimented with the ideal spin cycle for clean laundry?

Is there an R & D department at Haier home office.

And do they know about the circles.

Simone Giertz’s Laundry Chair: Where Your In-Between Clothes Find Their Throne

Have you ever found yourself with a garment or trousers that, while not entirely pristine, aren’t quite odorous enough for the laundry basket just yet? Chances are, you’ve simply discarded them onto that ubiquitous chair, haven’t you? You know the one—the armchair in your sleeping quarters or lounge that appears to have spent a greater portion of its existence holding a heap of garments than…

Something I’ve only just come to realize: how your garden is also a (secret) status symbol. In ye olden days, if you had a garden patch near your house, you used it to grow vegetables. Then the fifties arrived, and having a neat garden with flowers became the norm. If you have a well kept garden with flowers and plants these days, what does that mean? a) you don’t need that space to grow your own food; b) you have the time and money to keep that garden looking pristine (unless that is your hobby, and lemme tell you, it ain’t mine…); c) you have plenty of room to either dry your laundry indoors or you have the money to afford a dryer (and buy new clothes more often, because a dryer impacts how long your garments will last).

Covert capitalism.

Daily Comic Journal: May 9, 2023: “Warm Is A Matter Of Perspective.”

Because my family room is downstairs it’s always cooler than the rooms upstairs. This is great during those dog day hot days in August, not so much during those frigid days of January. That also means, during the changing of the seasons, from Winter to Spring and from Summer to Autumn, it stays cooler much longer. When that dehumidifier kicks on, it’s a sure sign that it’ll finally be warmer down…
