a lot of you seem to be desensitized right now but i would like to remind you that we are in the second week of massive destruction in the west bank. the Israeli military are carrying out an occupation operation in Jenin and nearby areas of the West Bank.

we are being severely impacted.

to put things into perspective: 70% of Jenin’s streets have been bulldozed, and 80% of the homes in the city have no water. infrastructure, water, sewage, communication, and electricity networks have been damaged

33 Palestinians have been killed since the invasion began, with 19 of those deaths occurring in Jenin. 7 children were murdered, including 16-year-old Lujain Musleh, who was shot INSIDE HER HOME by an Israeli sniper while looking out her window

in Jenin’s refugee camp, homes have been occupied and damaged. Israeli occupation forces have deliberately been making holes in the walls of citizens’ homes to facilitate their movement for their occupation operation. keep in mind - people cannot even go to work anymore. and there are severe shortages of food, medicine, and essential services. even shops have been destroyed. municipal crews are struggling to provide aid due to ongoing military fire.

the hospitals in Jenin are struggling to function due to water and electricity shortages, and patients are having to be transferred to other cities for care - which is insanely difficult with the operations going on. its back to school season all around the world, but here- schools remain inaccessible.

our city is in a state of paralysis.

Speaking of Ghassan Kanafani, I absolutely think you all should read his very short story Letter from Gaza.

The piece was written in 1956 when Kanfani was barely 20 years old. However, it remains a prophetic and relatable literary depiction of today’s Gaza in the most tragic way.

Yesterday, in Jenin, before the sun even came up, the IOF fired live rounds and tear gas canisters at Palestinian citizens. Israeli forces also shot a Palestinian young man in the abdomen and abducted three others. They ransacked the homes of the victims they abducted. The IOF also deployed an infantry unit near a café area in Jenin.

“The Palestinian cause is not a cause for Palestinians only, but a cause for every revolutionary… as a cause of the exploited and oppressed masses in our era” -Ghassan Kanafani

On this day, we observe the anniversary of the martyrdom of Palestinian revolutionary writer and critic, Ghassan Kanafani. Kanafani was murdered alongside his 17 year old niece, Lamees, by the Mossad (Zionist intelligence agency) with a car bomb in Beirut in 1972. His murder was intended to silence his message, and in this they failed. For the end of Kanafani’s life has done nothing to halt the blossoming legacy of his words and vision, which we continue to carry within our hearts.

Everything in this world can be robbed and stolen, except one thing; this one thing is the love that emanates from a human being towards a solid commitment to a conviction or cause.

One struggle. One people.

Muhammad Ali in the words of Ghassan Kanafani:

“لك شيء في هذا العالم، فقم.”
“You have a thing in this world, so stand up for it.”

God bless America and all other countries.

Rass El-Naqoura loomed on the horizon, wrapped in a blue haze, and the vehicle suddenly stopped. The women emerged from amid the luggage, stepped down and went over to an orange vendor sitting by the wayside. As the women walked back with the oranges, the sound of their sobs reached us. Only then did oranges seem to me something dear, that each of these big, clean fruits was something to be cherished. Your father alighted from beside the driver, took an orange, gazed at it silently, then began to weep like a helpless child.

In Rass El-Naqoura our vehicle stood beside many similar vehicles. The men began to hand in their weapons to the policemen who were there for that purpose. Then it was our turn. I saw pistols and machine guns thrown onto a big table, saw the long line of big vehicles coming into Lebanon, leaving the winding roads of the land of oranges far behind, and then I too cried bitterly. Your mother was still silently gazing at the oranges, and all the orange trees your father had left behind to the Jews glowed in his eyes… As if all those clean trees which he had bought one by one were mirrored in his face. And in his eyes tears, which he could not help hiding in front of the officer at the police station, were shining.

When in the afternoon we reached Sidon we had become refugees.

i finally got around to reading (and finishing) this book today. it’s Kanafani’s The 1936-1939 Revolt in Palestine (surprisingly i found an english copy online, you’re welcome) and of course, i highly recommend reading it especially for an insight into early jewish immigration to palestine, both palestinian and jewish communist parties at the time, the farmers revolt and its cultural impact 👌🏽

Carleton: why won’t your organisation engage in peace talks with the Israelis?
Kanafani: you don’t mean exactly peace talks, you mean capitulation– surrendering.
Carleton: why not just talk?
Kanafani: talk to whom?
Carleton: talk to the Israeli leaders.
Kanafani: that is the kind of conversation between the sword and the neck.

Australian journalist James Carleton interview with Ghassan Kanafani, leader of the PFLP in Beirut at the time. This footage has only been recently uncovered by James Carleton.

Since tumblr wouldn’t allow me to upload it in full, you can watch the full interview here.

This book isn’t by him per se but is basically letters he wrote to his former lover ghada alsamman which she compiled and published. Men in the Sun is not an easy read i agree but hear me out on this: finish it as quickly as you can so you don’t spend a long time dwelling in sadness and heartbreak!!
