When getting dressed, interpellation is never only an option: there is no neutral ground, no way to refuse to respond. Leaving the house naked is so unusual as to be a positive choice, meaning that making a fashion statement is something everyone does – helplessly. Like all language, this declaration is not always voluntary. You can be constrained in what you can say by the ways you have been taught to speak – by what you consider acceptable in the situation, by consideration for others, by limited time and limited resources, by the implicit rules of gender, race, class, by the explicit rules of your job, or the rules of appearing as a subject in public, the rules of the state.
“It is at this level that we should also locate the phenomenon of misinterpellation elaborated by James Martel.[5] Misinterpellation works in two directions: a subject recognizes him/herself in an interpellation that wasn’t even effectively enunciated but just imagined by him/her, like the fundamentalist who recognizes himself in a call of god (however, one can argue that this case is universal—does the interpellated subject generally not imagine the big Other [god, country, etc.] which addresses him/her?); and a subject recognizes him/herself in an interpellation which didn’t target him, as in the well-known anecdote about how Che Guevara became minister of economy (at an inner circle meeting immediately after the victory of the revolution, Fidel asked “Is there an economist here among you?” and Che quickly replied “Yes!” confusing “economist” with “Communist”). A more pertinent example here is the interpellation of individuals into subjects of human rights: when black slaves in Haiti recognized themselves as the subjects of human rights declared by the French Revolution, they of course in some sense “missed the point”—the fact that, although universal in their form (“all men”), human rights effectively privileged white men of property; however, this very “misreading” had explosive emancipatory consequences. This is what Hegel’s Cunning of Reason is about: human rights were “really meant” to be accepted only by white men of property, but their universal form was their truth. It was thus the first interpellation which was wrong, but the true interpellation could only actualize itself through the false one, as its secondary misreading.” - Slavoj Zizek (Bureaucracy as a Machine of Jouissance)

My experience of dysphoria—and really my first experience of gender altogether—is best described by […] the idea that your gender is not something you experience only in isolation, but something that is reflected back to you by other people, that gender is what leaks out in the eyes of cis people clocking us in public bathrooms or our family members making assumptions about us, and the ways the leakage bounces back and ricochets and echoes—in dressing rooms and the lines at nightclubs, and at airport security and in the line at Walgreens when you look like a girl and you’re buying condoms and enemas—and then also that is held up or shone upon us by other queer people, by our trans sisters and siblings, by other gender variant friends and familiars. […]

If […] one’s gender is something partially constituted by the gender that people reflect back to you, then part of being trans for me is _deciding_ to make a claim on the gender I want reflected back to me, instead of just letting people reflect it back to me as they wanted.

The bodies of women in a postsurgical culture are all compromised regardless of whether we choose or refuse surgical interventions. When intervention in one’s appearance emerges on the cultural scene as a possibility for many instead of just the rich and celebrated, when it becomes a middle-class practice (and statistics indicate that it has), then we are inevitably in a relationship to surgery regardless of whether we actually become surgical. We cannot be indifferent to the surgery that is everywhere around us, advertising on late-night television, beckoning us from the back pages of women’s magazines, from right there in the middle of the newspaper we open during breakfast. These advertisements no longer even disturb the cream in our morning coffee, so familiar have they become, like anything else in a consumer society. We are hailed by cosmetic surgery as a practice to which we must respond (in one way or another). There is no longer an “outside” of this story.

A “pair of shoes” could become a popular and positive symbol, because of the person who used it, that influence is strong enough in years ahead. Commercial culture value of our world. The person could strongly reflect on the item and trademark, leaving a deep impression on us .
* Fun fact:

The choice of “ shoes” are significant part of our personal performance and a lifestyle.
In my language we use an expression:
“ on the shoes greeted by the mind sended ”
( I hope Google translated it correctly to make sense)
The pair of shoes that I chose is Devon Pro Paddock Boots designed by Ariat, a brand which specialises in horse riding apparel. These boots are really special to me because I have been riding since I was a child and almost always I owned a pair of them. The first word that comes to my mind when I think of these boots is “discipline”. Horse riding is a unique sport that requires a combination of different elements such as determination, respect and courage but most importantly a grate amount of discipline. A successful rider is characterised by the ability to discipline themselves and their horse in order to build a strong relationship between them, which will allow them to work as a team.
For my visual response I created this collage on photoshop. Other than the boots, I have included two of my favourite athletes, Scott Brash and Penelope Leprevost. I still aspire to become like them one day and I really admire their discipline and all the hard work and effort that they have made. The typeface that I used is called “chuterolk” and it’s created by Namara Creative Studio. Chuterolk is a sans-sefif typeface, it is well balanced and it has two different variations, a sharp one and a rounded one. I used the sharp one because I feel that it represents better the meaning of the word discipline. I was also drawn by the simple yet strict and linear aesthetic of this particular typeface because I feel that it connects to the concept. Lastly, I type “discipline” in capital characters in order to emphasise it even more.
1.)
Research and find a shoe that ‘calls out to you’
2.)
Find a word that symbolizes the idea the shoe has ‘called’ out
3.)
Find a typeface that expresses the idea the shoe has ‘called’ out 4.)
Compose text and image to visually summarize the ‘call’ of the shoe
Both the image then the word were things that first came to mind. I’ve researched and tried other things too however nothing could best this combination in my eyes. A close contender for the word “Significant.” was “Remember.” however, it ultimately came down to it’s implications. I knew that “Remember.” would have been the plain and obvious approach since its highly surface level and easy to grasp. It sort of just gives itself. Meanwhile “Remember.” is an obvious callback to the event regarding the shoes, (held up by pristine gloves) referring to our past and our lost ones, the word “Significant.” goes one step beyond that. The word “Significant.” not only points to the exact idea above but it also highlights the fact, that it’s no ordinary object but rather a relic from the past.
Why the period? I felt like putting a period there just to amplify the significance of my message. It also helps to just simply make a point rather than open up a discussion since there’s nothing to talk about as the case is closed. It’s simply significant.
Why these shoes? I am not too experienced with shoes that are evoking in any means, besides the various Hypebeast fashioned shoes which I felt like will probably be a common theme within this mini project and i wanted to do something different. As for specifics, I cannot say why these shoes popped into my mind, besides learning them about in a history lesson ( about the holocaust and the concentration camps ), so perhaps back then I deemed it so “Significant.” that it has stuck with me for life.
Why this Typeface? My original idea was to go with Times New Roman as its aesthetics and significance fitted the theme - as in its an important item from the past and most legal documents use this typeface too. However this relic is not so relevant nowadays as Times New Roman is yet its also not so distant. Therefore, I ended up going with Times New Roman’s precursor: Plantin.
Secondly why you wear a Slides on a freezing cold weather?!
Finally why you wear socks on the beach!?
Sometimes the trend could be really ridiculous…out of sense!
The trends in general are part of our culture and fashion industry, they come from different backgrounds, unfortunately not always practical, logical and good looking, but could depict period of times and self expression.
I’ve done a research about the trend “slides and socks” , the background are the prisoners.
