2022 tian jian mini: my first proper brush with heicha. super compressed tea ball! it’s fairly smoky (more tolerably so than the fu soonga assam that i’ve been shoving in the back of the cupboard for a few months), with some astringency and a sweet, peaty and haylike aroma that reminds me of my equestrian days. curiously nostalgic for me, not quite so for my partner.

A bit messy, but some heicha and pears for this evening.

Mushrooms in your tea? Probiotic goodness in your tum? Sounds like Golden Flowers Heicha is on the menu! 🍄☕️ This prized tea possesses bold, full body and creamy sweet golden mushroom flavor, which balance each other out in a graceful and unique way.

2021 Raw Liubao | Liquid Proust

Thanks for all the likes and reblogs on my comic post c:

Liubao is a type of Heicha or black fermented tea. I’m completely inexperienced with the subject and I’m pretty sure this might be my first time with heicha…(?) Correct me if I’m wrong, I honestly can’t remember. To my surprise, the brew is very light in color. Almost a green-y yellow, but it’s hard to tell with my cups. Aroma is also surprising — a bit woody and reminds me of a garden shop. Flavor is slightly vegetal with raw cacao and some dryness in the mouth. Much greener than I expected from just looking at the unsteeped leaves. I’m not 100% sure how I feel about this tea, but I’d be interested in trying more Liubao in the future.

Haven’t gotten much done this spring break; I started taking ADHD medication and it’s left me feeling sick every day. The symptoms should pass, but I’ve been unproductive as a result. Should hopefully help in the long run.

Tasting: 2010 Cha Yu Lin “Monkey Jian” Tian Jian Heicha

Monkey Jian… a tea that was harvested over a decade ago in Anhua County, China. It a spring harvested tea of wild Tian Jian, which was then processed and basket stored in Hunan since 2010. I received this tea as a gift from my wife this past Christmas along with 3 other tea’s I’ve really come to enjoy. This one however, may stand as my favorite of the four, although the 2021 Peerless Red Lable ripe puerh is a strong contender.

Even before I scooped the tea into the warm gaiwan, the intense antique aroma of the tea was intoxicating. The warmth of the gaiwan only intensified these aromas. The dry leaf has a strong, peaty aroma, with notes of garden soil, wet piled fall leaves and old antique wood furniture. A slightly more vegetal and earthy change came on the wet leaf, along with a still very present aroma of peat. Mineral rich wet soils, forest ponds on a humid summer day, wet spuds and darker notes of dry charcoal and aged tobacco.

The brew has a very smooth and clean mouthfeel and an immediate heavy note of peat. Vegetal note of raw potato, dry hay, raw green beans, bean sprouts and antique books. I also got a slight hint of smoke on the end, similar to that of dry charcoal. After roughly the 4th infusion, the vegetal tones began to fade away with a very sweet, peat heavy, antique flavor, that coated the mouth with a sweet aftertaste.

It technically was the first tea I tasted in 2022, even though I’m just now writing about it. None the less, it’s ranked at the top of the charts for all the teas I have tasted this far. Sixteen and counting. And while I only just started tasting heicha’s such as this late last year, it’s no doubt a new favorite that will be featured in my personal collection.

5 stars or more!

Tea Mail From White2Tea!

After a long work day that ended with dealing with an anti-masker, this is just the kind of thing I like coming home to find!

After 3 long weeks of waiting and going through my last bit of tea mail from Yunnan Sourcing, I finally got more tea treats. This package included some new Heicha, sun dried black teas, two different kind of Lapsang and some tasty looking dragon balls (2021 Sunskate & 2020 Hot Brandy).

It also came with a couple sweet White2Tea stickers, one of which now stuck to the very laptop I’m writing about this with. Super stoked to gongfu the shit out of this nice haul and make my tasting notes.

More to follow!

Liu'An Gong Jian - 2021 Heicha from White2Tea

Perfect on a cold winter morning. Going light on the leaf leads to a refreshing morning cup.

A dark tea that brings up light memories..

I grew up in a sleepy coastal town. I remember the unanimous excitement when we, the residents, became aware that our capacity had grown enough to support two bakeries. It was pandemonium of the first degree; there hadn’t been news to cause an uproar like this since the lone video rental store closed and reopened as a yoga studio.

Out with the old, in…

Trying some 2004 Fuzhuan heicha from Anhua, enjoying the soft, smooth and subtle medicinal malty taste.
It doesn’t brew up inky-black in long steeps like ripe pu'er, and is extremely consistent and forgiving.
This one is from @bitterleafteas (“Nightcap”) and has a decent amount of the famous “golden flowers” mould.

[EN] I drink an aged tea and taking tasting notes. It will be on my blog soon, so I won’t say more. This the 4th infusion and it’s comforting. And yes, Lulu accompanies me (but right now, she sleeps). So, watch my blog for future updates. 😉.

Haven’t made this antique Liuan tea for a while. It needs a good mold to share a good tea with good friends.

Enjoying some Liu An tea acquired 3 years ago from @globalteahut. Beautiful soft tea, medium-thick body, sweet notes of dried fruit, caramel, toasted bread, it’s nutty and just very enjoyable. A very pleasant and relaxing tea! Glad I have a whole basket! #tea #cha #heicha #liuan #anhui #china #chinese #globalteahut #gth (at Swords, Dublin)
