Hares are really hard to draw in static pose in purely Pictish style. To work out how I began with dynamic figures and Early Medieval Pictish carved stone-style curled joints and Lindisfarne Gospels-style inner lines. But! Just in time for March! I finally cracked it. Herewith: 4 different hares.
The Picts carved many different beasts on their stones in the Early Medieval. Some real, some imaginary, a few somewhere in between. I set out to learn how to use the style to draw a few animals that they never did…

Vernal Intimations (17 March 2022)
A seasonal thing in the eaves of the Vernal Season_ Poetically, I have long seen the Pookah as a sacred animal connected to the “Earth Goddess” as a personification of Nature. Rabbits are her ‘messengers,’ and I treat them as way-watchers to the Pookah_ and the first days of Spring!

Mountain hares (Lepus timidus) change colors during the year with brown fur in summer and white fur in winter.
