I think of myself as a raw gemstone

Buried somewhere, waiting to be found

I’ve been buried deep for a long time

I think it is only possible for me to be found if there is some big disruption, an eruption

One that will propel me to the surface

Make it easier for someone to stumble upon me

And I hope that someone will see my potential, not just a mere rock

I hope that someone will pick me and take the time to unveil my true self

Then cherish the beauty reflected from my many facets

Do you ever feel like you’re lost? like you try so hard, with every inch of your gut to find yourself, but you just can’t?

Like everything you do get wasted out by the wind when you blink?

Do you ever feel that feeling of not belonging, not having a purpose, just existing by the grace of life?

Nonetheless was composed during the COVID-19 lockdowns, when Chris Lowe and Neil Tennant were isolated at their respective homes. At Lowe’s suggestion, Tennant learned to program with GarageBand, and the duo sent songs back and forth to each other. They found it refreshing to write for pleasure rather than to meet a deadline; Lowe remarked that he didn’t realize they were making an album until Tennant sent his proposed track listing. “Feel” came out on 20 August. The song had been offered to Brandon Flowers for his 2010 debut album; the reworked version on Nonetheless is about visiting a loved one in prison, inspired by a biography on George Blake.
