Entertaining

Are there any activities or hobbies you’ve outgrown or lost interest in over time?

I’ve always loved opening my home and entertaining friends. We had parties in all our homes. Even when space was tight, we invited friends and neighbors to our home. NYE 1999 We had a party for over 100 people at our home. Families came. I had made everyone a champagne glass with 2000 etched on it. At midnight a…

Choosing the Perfect Bottle Size for LI Backyard BBQs

Backyard barbecue season on Long Island runs on two fuels: charcoal and a well-planned bar. The quiet trick is bottle size. Start by estimating one standard drink an hour per guest, then translate that into formats that keep the grill master out of the liquor store mid-sear.

SMALL BUT MIGHTY

• 50 ml minis: built-in portion control and perfect for tasting flights without risking open-bottle waste.

• 375 ml half bottles: reserve pours for rare bourbon or craft agave when only a few aficionados are present.

THE WORKHORSE

• 750 ml: ideal for shaken cocktails and neat pours because bartenders can lift, measure, and swap labels fast.

CROWD-PLEASERS

• 1.5 L magnums: twice the wine, half the interruptions, and their wider necks keep rosé colder on humid beach days.

• 1.75 L “handle”: the value king for rum punches and batch margaritas—fewer caps, lower cost per ounce.

PRO TIPS

- Keep large-format spirits fitted with pour spouts to reduce over-pours.

- Stash minis on ice near the smoker; guests can grab one while you mind the brisket.

- Pair a single magnum with each protein—rosé for seafood, red blend for steaks—to signal abundance without clutter.

Plan your sizes right and the only thing you’ll run out of is daylight.

Put together a tasty charcuterie board with different kinds of cured meats, cheeses, fruits, and sides. Great for having people over or spending a cozy night in.

Ingredients: 200g prosciutto. 150g salami. 150g chorizo. 100g brie cheese. 100g camembert cheese. 100g cheddar cheese. 1 cup mixed olives. ½ cup dried figs. ½ cup grapes. ¼ cup almonds. ¼ cup honey. ¼ cup whole grain mustard. Crackers and baguette slices for serving.

Instructions: Set up a big wooden board or platter for your cheese and meats. Fold and arrange the prosciutto, salami, and chorizo on the board first. Put the different kinds of cheese in different parts of the board. For variety, spread the mixed olives, dried figs, grapes, and almonds out on the board. Adding honey to the brie and camembert cheese will make them taste sweet. Put whole grain mustard in small bowls so people can dip their food. Add a variety of crackers and sliced baguette to your charcuterie board to finish it off. Serve right away and enjoy!

For your next party, make a beautiful and tasty charcuterie board. This beautiful spread has a range of cured meats, artisanal cheeses, and sides that are great for sharing with family and friends.

Ingredients: 4-6 types of cured meats e.g., prosciutto, salami, chorizo. 3-4 types of artisanal cheeses e.g., brie, cheddar, blue cheese. 2-3 types of crackers or bread e.g., baguette slices, gluten-free crackers. 1-2 types of pickles or olives e.g., cornichons, Kalamata olives. ½ cup of honey or fruit preserves. ¼ cup of nuts e.g., almonds, cashews. Fresh fruits e.g., grapes, figs, apple slices. Fresh herbs for garnish e.g., rosemary, thyme. 1-2 small bowls of mustard or aioli. Assorted chocolates or dark chocolate chunks.

Instructions: Choose a big wooden board or platter to start putting together your charcuterie. Arrange the cured meats on the board in a way that looks good. Put the artisanal cheeses on the board in different places to get a range of tastes and textures. Fill in the gaps between the meats and cheeses with crackers or bread. For a salty contrast, spread the pickles or olives out on the board. Spread fruit preserves or honey in a small dish and set it on the board. For a balanced spread, spread the chocolates, nuts, and fresh fruits out across the board. Add some fresh herbs in between the food to give it some color and flavor. Put small bowls of aioli or mustard on the board so that people can dip their food. If you’d like, serve the charcuterie board with wine.

Choosing Liquor Bottle Sizes That Match Every Celebration

WHY SIZE MATTERS

Picture ten friends and a single 750-ml bottle of tequila—someone is leaving thirsty. Bottle size is the quiet hero of smooth service, guiding pour rate, temperature, and the visual energy of the bar.

SMALL GATHERINGS (4–6 PEOPLE)

• One or two 750-ml bottles of the featured spirit cover classic cocktails.
• Split-size prosecco (187 ml) keeps brunch bubbles crisp without half-finished bottles.

MID-SIZE PARTIES (8–15)

• A 1-liter or handle (1.75 L) of vodka or rum streamlines mixed drinks.
• A standard magnum of sparkling wine (1.5 L) pours roughly twelve flutes and stays cold longer than two 750s.

CROWD SCENES (16+)

• Jeroboam or double-magnum champagne makes a showy toast.
• Consider boxed wine for easy refills and less glass waste.

QUICK MATH FOR 2026 EVENTS

Average adult: 1 drink per hour. Multiply by planned hours and round up. Better to send sealed extras home with guests than stall the dance floor.

PRO TIP

Chill large formats sooner; they need an extra hour on ice. Keep a jigger nearby—big bottles inspire heavy pours.

Choosing the Right Liquor Bottle Size for 2025 Entertaining

POUR MATH MADE SIMPLE

Ever wonder why a 750-ml “fifth” feels perfect for weeknight cocktails but mysteriously vanishes at parties? Bottle volume quietly shapes flavor, cost, and waste long before the first splash hits your shaker.

SMALL FORMATS, BIG VARIETY

• 50-ml minis = one-sip test drive, ideal for peat-curious palates.
• 375-ml demi = two generous glasses—dessert wine without leftovers.

THE STANDARD VS THE LITER

A 750-ml grants about 25 one-ounce pours. Upgrade to a liter and gain eight extra servings, usually at a lower cost per ounce—handy when the guest list balloons.

GOING LARGE

Handles (1.75 L) cut packaging and survive a long weekend. Magnum wine (1.5 L) oxidizes slower than two regular bottles, keeping brightness intact through an all-night celebration.

QUICK CONVERSION CHEAT SHEET

• 30 ml ≈ 1 neat pour
• 750 ml ≈ 25 pours
• 1 L ≈ 33 pours

Choosing the right size is less about math and more about intention—tasting, hosting, collecting, or cutting waste. Match volume to the moment and every pour feels deliberate.

Christmas Tipples

I was researching the enforcement of the famous (or infamous) 1659 Massachusetts statutory “ban” on Christmas in the records of the Essex County quarterly courts the other day and soon realized that no one got fined for “keeping Christmas” but rather for excessive “tippling” on Christmas. I think if you kept Christmas quietly at home you were fine, but if you or your guests became “distempered…

Mastering Liquor Bottle Sizes: A Simple 2025 Host Guide

WHY SIZE MATTERS

Picking the right liquor bottle size sets the tone for every pour. A 750 ml is the workhorse, but half-bottles invite tasting flights and magnums keep a party moving without constant uncorking.

SPACE, BUDGET, LIFESTYLE

• Studio shelf? Minis and 375 ml bottles maximize variety without crowding.
• Entertaining weekly? Handles (1.75 L) drop the cost per ounce for batched cocktails.
• Cellaring reds or aged rum? Large formats slow oxidation for smoother aging.

POUR MATH MADE EASY

Plan on 1.5 oz per drink. A standard bottle yields about 16 pours; a handle close to 40. Multiply expected drinks by guests, divide by the pours per bottle, then add a 10 % buffer. The result prevents mid-event runs while avoiding a fridge full of leftovers.

PRACTICAL BUYING TIPS

- Measure racks before ordering.

- Check weight limits if storing magnums overhead.

- Rotate open bottles forward so older stock is used first.

A little strategy turns your home bar into a purposeful, good-looking collection ready for any toast.
