Thinking about women, names and STEM today
Had a session on inclusivity and identity at our monthly EDI session at the university today. This got me thinking about how women’s identity is not only challenged by just being a woman in STEM, but also just by just being a woman.
This is perhaps a uniquely south asian problem but so much of our identity as women who have academic publication is tied to our surnames, that it becomes downright unwise to change your names. If you want to get married, you are expected by default to take up your husband’s name. But in academia, you are known by your last name first. You’re Doe et al, not Jane et al. So by giving up your family name, you are not only expected to let go of your identity as woman and a person in your own right, but also as a professional.
This problem is compounded if you choose to marry someone who is in the same field as you. Suddenly your work and your achievements get attributed to your husband for no good reason.
I have no profound solutions or calls to action here. Most women I know have kept their names which gives me hope. But the societal expectation is still a heavy burden and this is such a niche problem that I feel further isolates women in STEM by making them “outcasts” to a culture and a society that refuses to move on.
