Here we have Kant’s second claim. The moral value of an action does not depend on the goal it achieves but on the principle that guided the decision. Effects and outcomes cannot define morality because the same results could be produced accidentally or by manipulation. The decisive factor is the rule the person followed when deciding to act.
Then Kant defines duty more precisely as duty of acting out of respect for a law that reason recognizes as binding. Respect here does not mean admiration in the usual sense. It means recognition that a principle overrides personal inclination. The law matters more than immediate desire.
This brings Kant to his most famous formulation. When deciding what to do, one should ask a structural question if the rule behind my action could be applied universally by everyone? If the answer is no, if the rule would collapse or become contradictory when universalized then the action is morally invalid.
Kant gives a concrete example. Making a false promise to escape a difficult situation. It might seem useful in the moment. But if everyone followed the rule “lie when it benefits you,” then promises would stop functioning entirely. No one would believe them. The system would destroy itself. Therefore the rule cannot be universal, and the action fails the test. This is not about predicting consequences in a complicated way. It is about testing whether the rule itself is logically stable when applied universally.
Kant’s claim is surprisingly radical. Ordinary people already use this reasoning in daily life. Most people instinctively recognize unfairness when rules are applied inconsistently. Philosophy does not invent morality; it clarifies something already operating within common reasoning.

Duty appears when we do something not because we feel like it, and not because it benefits us, but because we recognize that it is the right principle to follow. But if the merchant does this only to maintain reputation and profit, the action is practical self-interest, not moral duty.
