Dioscorea in Modern Medicine: From Ancient Tuber to Therapeutic Powerhouse

Dioscorea plant

Introduction: Bridging Traditional Wisdom and Scientific Discovery

For centuries, across diverse cultures from West Africa to East Asia, various species of Dioscorea—commonly known as yam—have served as both staple food sources and cornerstones of traditional medicine. Today, this humble tuber genus, encompassing over 600 species, is undergoing a remarkable renaissance in the…

Look who woke back up! That was quick. All I did was move it outside and give it a couple waterings.

(Dioscorea elephantipes)

Ube update! (Dioscorea alata)
It’s made so much progress and is no longer stalling! I wanted it as an experiment and as a novelty item from Filipino culture, but it’s also a genuinely ornamental plant and is very pretty! Yams are apparently my version of a decorative aroid essentially :P
(I tried aroids once, but I accidentally killed my baby Monstera with overwatering and never got around to trying again.)

two seedlings labeled Dioscorea mexicana growing in small plastic potsALT

my babies :’) i love the pointy leaves (compared to the rounder hearts of my other love, D. elephantipes)

i think they are are a bit pale because my Big Rig grow light is too strong for them, but the living room is finally getting enough sun to keep the seedlings by the window 🙏

New leaf for the ube! I’m hoping it’s established enough to where it can start vining! It’s been only able to keep one leaf at a time but the apical meristem hasn’t shriveled yet so I have hope!

As a Filipino I love ube and I’m hoping I can get aerial tubers out of this friend. If not, it’ll still make a fun ornamental with cultural significance and be my version of a decorative aroid.

THE UBE IS ALIVE. The little hecker made me think it died but it just retreated into a tuber, and it’s putting out new growth!!!

Also now I know that, under stress it can tuberize under my care and send shoots from that tuber.

This lovely leaf belongs to Dioscorea discolor. It’s actually an offset of my D. discolor that I gave to a friend. They grow up so fast.

Dioscorea bulbifera by Richard Ellis
Via Flickr:
Dioscorea bulbifera has a lot colloquial names including: air potato, air yam, bitter yam, cheeky yam, potato yam, aerial yam, up-yam and parsnip yam. The “air yams” are bulbils produced along the vine - photographed here www.flickr.com/photos/hrichardellis/14940899700/in/photol… . It is considered an invasive species in Florida because the vines that you can see in this photo will strangle and smother surrounding vegetation. #Dioscoreabulbifera #Dioscorea #bulbifera #CUgreenhouse #botany

About 10 months ago, I decided to grow some dioscorea elephantipes from seed. My first attempt was a mixed bag, mostly because I decided on growing them under suboptimal lighting and humidity, but I ended up with a few cute seedlings. This is one of those caudiciform species that’s too pricey for an archaeologist, so I’ll take a 25% survival rate lol

my little Dioscorea Elephantipes babies :’) their new trellis and grow light should really get things going now that the temperature is coming down

(they are winter growers, but south african winters are still a lot brighter than scandinavian ones lmao)
