During the 12-day war, Iran fired more than 550 ballistic missiles and 1,000 one-way attack drones, testing both Israeli and US missile defenses. About 43 were said to have penetrated the defense systems to hit their targets.

In the event of an all-out conflict, Iran could increase that number dramatically and potentially exploit shortages of US anti-air missiles to hit targets in Israel as well as US military bases throughout the region. Gen Dan Caine, the chair of the joint chiefs of staff, has told Trump that a new war with Iran could further drain US stockpiles of interceptor missiles that could be needed to counteract other future threats, including those from China.

“In all the years of war games in Washington, in the Pentagon and with all the thinktanks, without exception one or two US warships would sink,” Vaez said.

“Obviously, it would push Trump to retaliate in a devastating manner. But then he will have launched another major war in the Middle East,” he added.

“There’s no way that Trump can frame that as a victory. His presidency will be completely eclipsed by that.”

“As soon as Congress reconvenes next week, we will compel a vote of the full House of Representatives on the bipartisan Khanna-Massie War Powers resolution. This legislation would require the President to come to Congress to make the case for using military force against Iran. The Iranian regime is brutal and destabilizing, seen most recently in the killing of thousands of protestors. However, undertaking a war of choice in the Middle East, without a full understanding of all the attendant risks to our servicemembers and to escalation, is reckless. We maintain that any such action would be unconstitutional without consultation with and authorization from Congress. Next week, every Member will have the opportunity to go on the record as to whether they support military action against Iran absent Congressional approval.”

Are we really just going to gloss over the fact that the President of the United States openly referred to himself as a dictator?

This shouldn’t be a left-versus-right issue. Regardless of where you fall on the political spectrum, that kind of language from the highest office in the country should give anyone pause.

For those who don’t know what I’m talking about…during a speech at the World Economic Forum in Davos on January 21, 2026, President Trump referenced media criticism of his leadership and said, *“Usually they say, ‘he’s a horrible dictator-type person.’ I’m a dictator. But sometimes you need a dictator…”* He framed the remark as commentary on how the press characterizes him, but the choice to embrace the label, even rhetorically is not insignificant.

Factually, the United States was founded in explicit opposition to dictatorship. The Constitution is built around limits on executive power, separation of powers, checks and balances, and the idea that no single individual rules by decree. American presidents swear an oath to uphold that system, not to bypass it. Historically, when heads of state normalize authoritarian language, even jokingly, it has often coincided with efforts to expand executive authority, undermine independent institutions, or delegitimize opposition and the press.

Words matter, especially from a president. Public rhetoric shapes norms, expectations, and what people come to see as acceptable. When the leader of a constitutional republic casually adopts the language of autocracy, it erodes the long-standing principle that power flows from the law and the people, not from one persons will.

This isn’t about being Democrat, Republican, or somewhere in between. It’s about recognizing that openly flirting with the idea of dictatorship… whether meant seriously, defensively, or sarcastically is objectively alarming in a democracy.
