ISSUE

People of Bangladesh 🇧🇩: We spent an entire month fighting the combined might of bullets, bombs, machineguns, mortars, helicopters, APCs and snipers to take down a bloodthirsty tinpot dictator that oppressed us for 15 years.

American white leftists be like: CIA hoax! Colour revolution! You are Zionist spies and Mossad agents!

It is incredibly jarring to risk everything for a revolution only to have people thousands of miles away who have never faced a fraction of that danger explain your own life to you as if it were a script from a spy novel. The disconnect you are describing regarding the July Revolution in Bangladesh 🇧🇩 is a classic example of “West plaining” When people are deeply entrenched in a specific worldview they often find it easier to believe in a grand geopolitical conspiracy than to accept that a grassroots movement of students and citizens could successfully topple a 15 year autocracy.

THE ERASURE OF AGENCY

By calling an organic movement a “CIA hoax” these critics are effectively saying that the people of Bangladesh 🇧🇩 are not capable of organizing themselves or wanting freedom on their own terms. It is a form of ideological narcissism where they believe everything that happens in the world must somehow be about the West or US foreign policy. In reality the history of the Anti Discrimination Student Movement was built on very local and very tangible grievances: the quota system, the suppression of free speech and the brutal response by the Chhatra League and state forces. It is exhausting to have your trauma turned into a “talking point” for someone’s Twitter feed. Your lived reality as in the sound of the helicopters and the courage of those on the streets is more real than any armchair theory.

my first trip to DHAKA was centered around the poor as is the usual case in all of my travels. This was/is one of the worst slums I have been in in all my travels. . Mohammadpur in Dhaka is still home to a significant population of Urdu-speaking Biharis, primarily concentrated in the overcrowded Geneva Camp. Despite gaining Bangladeshi citizenship in 2008, over 40,000 Biharis continue to live in, or around, this camp in poor conditions, making it a prominent settlement for the community in central Dhaka. taken in 1991 Mohommadpur Dhaka Photography’s new conscience linktr.ee/GlennLosack glosack.wixsite.com/tbws

Sometimes when I’m feeling especially homesick, I can feel it in every cell in my body.

With every pump of my heart, something heavy presses against my ribs.

It sits in my throat.

It threads itself through my veins and arteries.

It moves with ever sinew and tendon when I walk.

It rises and falls with each breath.

This will be my fourth year living away from home, and the second country I’ve lived in by myself.

People say it gets easier.

It doesnt.

It doesn’t get easier with every family photo I’m not in.

It doesn’t get easier with very funeral and Eid I miss.

And it doesn’t get easier knowing that I don’t even want to be here.

In an ideal world, Bangladesh would not feel like a place I had to escape in order to survive.

In an ideal world, it would not be shaped by systems carved out by colonialism and shaped by capitalism.

Systems that hollowed out institutions, warped politics, and turned staying into something only the unfortunate do.

There wouldn’t be this constant unrest. This exhaustion. This cultural erosion. This suffocating mix of sexism, religious extremism and economic precarity.

I think that’s why I care so much about colonialism. Because it doesn’t just live in the journal articles I have to read for class. It lives in the fact that I am not allowed to imagine a future in the place that I am from. It lives in my body, in every single cell that resists insulin.

And each and every single one of these cells ache when the roads are too quiet and the air is too clean.

Sometimes the sirens in the middle of the night remind me of the ones in Dhaka.

When I’m crossing the road before the little man turns green, I think I feel echoes of the same rush I felt when my mum would march into traffic with her orna fluttering in the wake of cars whizzing by, while I scurry behind her, trying to not get hit by one of them.

The grey air laced with smoke from vapes and cigarettes tries to emulate Dhaka’s signature cocktail of carbon monoxide and dust.

But it’s not the same. Obviously.

Ekhankar rastar moyla gula beshi porishkar. Kono gondho uthe na.

Ekhankar brishti beshi bhodro. Prottekdin brishti porleo, ekdino desher moton gach-kapano jhor hoy na. Matir theke kono shugondhi gran uthe na.

Majhe majhe ami nijeke ghinna kori.

Ami amar deshe thakte eibhabe kore bhalobashte pari nai keno?

Kintu jokhon eirokom jhapay monkharap lage, eiguli kisui jay ashe na.

My body remembers the sweat clinging to my skin.

The noise.

The colours.

The substantiality of it all.

And it stays.

Whether I like it or not.

The feeling ebbs and flows.

Sometimes its too much to bear.

Sometimes I can bury it in the back of my mind.

But it’s never something I can just forget

From personal experience, non-Dhakaite shawdeshis don’t quite understand the concept of mama-ing your way through life. Mama outside your bloodline is a formal endearment (oxymoron) with very specific applications. You don’t make a mama out of every other blue collar professional. The point is to establish that mama is supposed to cut you some slack, maybe grant you a discount or drop you a bit farther than the pre decided location, without verbalizing the abdar. Not because you’re making a request, which you’re not, rather because that’s how it should be between mama-bhagina. Please don’t pull the mama card in restaurants or shopping malls where you don’t bargain. The staff there (slaving away to capitalism) can be addressed with pronouns only, or bhai at most (you being the opochoykari in question, get it?)

If op is over the age of fifty-five, he’s a chacha (mama-ship subscription comes with an expiry date); any and every close friend is a worthy mama, your heart does the bidding in this case.

Lastly, where it gets tricky- mama deserves nothing less than your best behaviour (given that only unproblematic allies unlock mama status), and nothing more than your unsmiling, poker-faced front. Overtly saccharine mama-fying is a deal breaker.

Remember, handling mama-chop is a snow job for those who are willing to learn the craft, internalize the nuances, and then improvise as needed; let your soft soaping leave no bubbles for the rest of us.
