Last night had been a messy hunt. You, Sam, and Dean, taking on a particularly sly wendigo. Dean had limped away with a strained ankle, Sam had been slammed into a wall hard enough to make your own ribs ache in sympathy. And you? You weren’t doing much better yourself. Bruises mapped their way across your skin, exhaustion fogging your mind.

But damn it, you were hungry.

So you let the boys sleep. Left a quick note taped to the motel door—Gone for food.

You’d considered taking the Impala, but Dean would probably jolt awake like some kind of creepy cryptkeeper if he heard the engine. You didn’t want his indignant bitching, you wanted some damn food. So you walked.

The diner was the kind of place that had probably looked exactly the same since the ‘80s—faded checkered floors, a counter lined with chrome stools, and a coffee pot that had likely seen things no coffee pot should. The morning light slanted through the window beside you. Winter was starting to lose its grip, the cold giving way to something softer, lighter. Even your aching muscles felt a little looser, the quiet hum of the diner settling into your bones. For the first time in what felt like days, you exhaled.

The bell above the door jingled. A pleasant sound, soft and unassuming.

Instinctively, your gaze flicked toward the entrance, half-expecting Sam or Dean to come shuffling in, still looking half-dead and demanding coffee.

They didn’t. Instead, she walked in.

Ruby.

She strolled through the door like she owned the damn place, blonde hair catching the morning light in a way that made her look almost angelic—if angels were the kind of creatures that manipulated their way into your nightmares.

She dropped into the seat across from you without ceremony, propping her elbows on the table as she leaned towards you.

“What, no fries?”

her horns are inspired by fiddlehead ferns, which are both lovely and somehow horrific, just like our girl (they are also delicious - real ‘food of the elder gods’ kind of thing imo). the pink extrusions could be brain matter, turned inside out and proudly displayed in the open

i started working on this a while back but didn’t have time to get back to it till recently. i was originally just going to do a series of 3 pictures - human ruby, black eyes, and hellform. but i’ve been trying to learn after effects so decided to animate it and try some new techniques. and then it got way out of hand (as things tend to do for me). it also took me waaaay too long to make a usable gif from the animation. damn you, tumblr, and your 10MB (or 5? or 3??) convoluted and draconian gif size limits

Maybe it’s just cause i love ruby and im sure this has been said before but what a perfect character. Honestly. Pulling one of the greatest tricks simply by being absolutely honest on what she was saying.

After a heated debate about whether they should trust Ruby or not, Sam noticed his brother squirming. Then he gave a loud groan of pain. “What’s going on with you?” Sam questioned his older brother Dean who started to grimace and groan all of a sudden. “I don’t know, Sam! Ow! Something’s wrong!” He said massaging his stomach. Sam felt more and more confused and kneeled beside him to get a good look at his brother. “It must be the coven, man! Its the friggin’ goddamn coven, I know it!” Sam sighed and checked his Colt. “Dean, just hold on! I am going to take care of it.” Sam promised as he started to look everywhere for the hex bags planted by one of the witches.

He felt more and more desparate as he tore open the mattress from the middle and found nothing. Dean had started to scream in agony and Sam couldn’t take it anymore. He took the Colt and ran out of the room. Meanwhile, Dean felt as if someone had been stabbing his chest and abdomen with white hot knives. Then he started to cough up blood from the mouth. Oh crap! Am I really gonna bite the dust this time? Dean thought when the door flew open and there was a tall and blonde female figure towering there. She charged in as he said, “ You wanna kill me? Get in line, bitch!” She tackled him on the bed, held him down and poured a potion that tasted unbelievably horrible.

It did the trick. Everything stopped suddenly and he felt much better. He sat up and took a good look at her. “You… you saved me!!” The demon named Ruby who was possessing an immensely pretty tall and blonde girl, smirked at him. The way she looked at him made him shiver inside. “Don’t mention it, shortbus!” she turned and headed towards the door. “THANKS A LOT! I never thought I have to thank a blonde demonic barbie.” She was barely out of the door when she heard him yelling for her to wait. She stomped back into the room. They both eyed each other and Dean looked away and sighed. “You’re the shortbus, shortbus…” he grumbled. “What’s this about? Can we move this along because I don’t know about you but I have places to be….”

He got up and got close to her till he could feel the heat coming off her body. “ I am sorry for being such an asshole to you and for the stuff I said to you!” Ruby raised her eyes at him and crossed her arms over her chest. “I.. I will deny I have ever said this, the thing is, I am a little jealous of my little brother Sammy, for… for getting you”, he confessed, blushing. “Wow, what are you… are you hitting on me now because your brother likes me and trusts me, maybe more than you?” Ruby snarled, her eyes flashing with anger. “No, I think my brother really likes you and I don’t want him to get hurt, is all.” The petite blonde demon started to pace back and forth in the room, shooting angry glances at Dean. “I mean, if the situation was different and if… if you weren’t a demon, I..I think we would’ve chosen one another..”

“But I understand, hell, if I was in Sammy’s place, I would’ve fallen for you. Like, right now, I’m feeling confused about you, about why you saved me, and about everything. I was lowkey crushing on you when I first saw you because you are kinda, I don’t know, badass?” he buried his face in his hands and sighed quietly. He felt her sit beside him and put her arm around him. Wow, he is really a mess right now and it is kind of cute, Ruby thought! This is NOW or NEVER!!! She grabbed him and kissed him ferociously. She felt him freeze and didn’t feel him kissing her back at first. Then he started to kiss her back. It seemed like he was pouring all of his anger and frustations into the kiss. She pulled off his jacket and threw it away to the other side of the room and tore off his shirt to reveal his toned chest and abs.

It was as if she was a hungry predator and he was her meal. Within a minute, she kissed and sucked all the parts of him within her reach. His screams of both pleasure and pain turned her on more. In Supernatural Season 3 Episode 9 Malleus Maleficarum, when Ruby( Katie Cassidy, who is the best actress to portray Ruby) saves Dean and when he thanks her, she gives him this soft look, I mean, like wow, thats ship material right there. I have been shipping the two of them ever since!!

Katie Cassidy’s Ruby fit much better than Genevieve Padalecki’s Ruby. Don’t get me wrong, they both did a great job, but Katie’s Ruby had more bite to her. Like, she would stab you and then make you apologize for dulling her knife. Whereas Genevieve’s would say “Sorry about this” and then have someone else stab you.

I loved Ruby’s return. Over the last couple of months I fell absolutely in love with everything Genevieve Padalecki. Her blog, her instagram, her clothing, and all else. I admire her hugely and I was so happy to see her back in Supernatural. We hadn’t seen her since The French Mistake and then she wasn’t playing Ruby, just a parody of herself.

First let’s talk sentimentality. Gen first met Jared on the set of Supernatural. They’ve been married for more than ten years now, have three children together, and live happily in Austin, Texas along with chickens, honey bees, and dogs. It’s perfect to me that she was included in the final season of the show. Even if she didn’t show up till the fourth season, Jared and Gen started their lives together thanks to that show. And it’s lovely that not only were both Danneel and Gen included in the final season, but their characters and parts in the final season were heavily intertwined. (And I love that one is an angel and one is a demon. I always adore those dynamics.)

Now let’s talk story. Supernatural has been going on for fifteen freaking years so sometimes we forget about some of the reoccurring characters that were in the earlier seasons. You know, back in those days when Sam had very “2000s” hair and there was an episode devoted to the hook man. When you bring up the names Bela, Ellen and Jo, or Gordon, you know them on instinct. But they aren’t the first Supernatural characters you think of. It’s been so long that they’re down on the list. Ruby similarly is one of those characters. You get there eventually, but you’d mention Donna before you think of her, and she was only in maybe eight episodes. Ruby was in a whole season. And she was integral. She led Sam into drinking her blood and releasing Lucifer from the cage. People sometimes forget how important she was to the entire Winchester storyline. So it’s nice that they brought her back in a story standpoint as well as sentimental one. And I like the storyline she followed in season 15. She and Anael hid the occultum so they could have a safe place to hide during the apocalypse if necessary. It was very in character to have a back up plan just in case her plan went awry. I wish we got some background into her pre-demon occult years. But that would have had to be in earlier seasons.

Nevertheless I really enjoyed this little cameo, both from Genevieve and Ruby. And I think it should be talked about some more.

I feel like this shouldn’t need to be said, but apparently it does:

Ruby didn’t care about Sam. If she had, she would have cared about what he wanted for himself

Ruby wasn’t in love with Sam. She was in love with the power she thought she could attain by destroying his humanity.

Ruby wasn’t devoted to Sam. She was devoted to the project of raising Lucifer.

Let’s consider:

“You don’t even know how hard this was! All the demons out for my head. No one knew. I was the best of those sons of bitches! The most loyal! Not even Alastair knew! Only Lilith! Yeah, I’m sure you’re a little angry right now, but, I mean, come on, Sam! Even you have to admit – I’m – I’m awesome! …

“It wasn’t the blood. It was you… and your choices. I just gave you the options, and you chose the right path every time. You didn’t need the feather to fly, you had it in you the whole time, Dumbo! I know it’s hard to see it now… but this is a miracle. So long coming. Everything Azazel did, and Lilith did. Just to get you here. And you were the only one who could do it.” (4.22 Lucifer Rising)

The idea that she just gave Sam the options is some serious gaslighting when in fact she lied, manipulated, seduced, and addicted him. And let’s be clear, she didn’t do it for Sam. She did it for herself. It was her ambition that drove her. Her statement that “I’m sure you’re a little angry now” shows how little she understands or cares about Sam.

Ruby and Sam was not just a toxic relationship. It was an abusive relationship. Ruby knew how destroyed, how incredibly vulnerable Sam was when Dean went to hell, and she used his grief and desire for revenge to benefit herself and the very forces he wanted to fight.

If you want to ship them, go ahead, but don’t pretend she gave a rat’s ass about Sam.

Someone who’s been here longer than me and knows the ancient lore- why did we not see Jo and Ellen for over two seasons until they were brought back just to be used as canon fodder?? I know the show likes to blame its large female fan base for its own misogyny (in that all the women watching just got so upset seeing the boys interact with *gasp* women, so…therefore…..the show, uh, couldn’t write any female characters unless they were destined to die soon) but is that the real reason? That just seems so hard to swallow considering that my own (albeit heavily warded) bubble of tumblr absolutely loves both these characters and ash and what they brought to the show….so like yeah just anyone with the knowledge can you answer if it really was because of larger fandom/GA dislike (at the time) or just a network and/or writing decision? 

I’m also really curious as to if they *were* doing it because of fandom dislike, was it just pandering to the b*bros or w*ncesties because at that point in like s2 this show was still pretty small in its fanbase and that subsection of fandom was the most vocal and therefore had the false appearance of being the majority? 

I also wonder about how Ruby was received- what’s the backstory behind the actress change to Gen- was that just Katie Cassidy getting a different role on something or was there bts drama? How did (the non crazy portion of) the fans react to Ruby’s character when she was introduced? Or Bela’s? And would those reactions actually have effected the characters’ arcs in the story *if* fan reactions also negatively effected ratings (I’m thinking similar to- though opposite of- Cas being written off and then brought back due to fan outrage that tanked s7 ratings)? Did that happen with any female characters in which their presence actually did effect ratings of the show? 

The other only really long term multi-episode character to consider (in that they directly affected sam or dean, so i’m not including meg or hannah, since they were more connected with cas and while rowena is connected to sam, her initial introduction is via crowley) is Amelia, but she- like Lisa- always seemed intended to have a short shelf life as love interest developed off screen, so even if people didn’t like her I don’t think there was ever intention to keep her around. Idk I just think this misconception that still exists that female fans didn’t want female characters on the show and that’s why they were so few and far between- specifically in the first half or so of the show- is so gross and an entirely unfair cop out by the producers/network/some writers. besides Charlie and Mary and Eileen (and kinda Billie) every other woman the boys meet sticks around for maybe an episode and that’s it. And of those above four almost everyone (including the GA) was angry at the brutal murders bucklemming served Charlie and Eileen, love or hate Mary her being fridged twice for man pain is beyond ridiculous and not something to blame fans for and Billie just got randomly villainized at the end (but prior to the final arc of s15 most people liked her as death), so i don’t feel like fans were particularly gunning for any of those characters aside from maybe mary (i’m not sure how big the fandom split on her actually is). ***plus ¾ of the above mentioned characters plus everyone in wayward sisters (besides Jody) were all developed and created in the final third of the show, which I think is truly illustrative of dabb and co taking the reins and writing some wrongs when it came to women rep on the show (not you bucklemming you can choke)***

Before this episode and these words from Ruby, we were left with the mythos that everyone in the Empty is just sleeping in a peaceful oblivion. That’s definitely how the Empty tried to sell it to Cas when it was trying to get him to go back to sleep. Since Castiel, who just woke up, would have known that was bullshit we can only conclude that this change to the mythos–that The Empty is in fact a version of psychological Hell for demons and angels–was an intentional change they made in season 15 that they had not yet intended in season 13 when we first meet the Empty. 

This opens up several  avenues of speculation. Why would the writers go out of their way to make Castiel’s fate even worse than it was already written to be? If Castiel doesn’t return somewhere in the 2 hour block next week (Nov.19th), then the writers will have gone out of their way, unnecessarily, to leave the audience knowing that Castiel isn’t just gone into some black sleeping oblivion, but is instead actively suffering for all eternity. WHY? Why would they do that when this line from Ruby did not seem to serve any purpose than to make Castiel’s death even more cruel and horrible than it already would have been? 

The second avenue of speculation, which I’m really curious to see, is if this whole concept of angels and demons being forced to confront their life choices and regrets will somehow effect them. Did everyone in the Empty wake up when Jack exploded? If they did, are they the same people they were when they died, or have they idk learned a lesson? Maybe become better for it? Castiel already faced his regrets in life and learned from them, so all he’s getting in Empty is a replay of “his worst hits”, and if the writers leave it there that’s pretty fucked up.
