Another with the deep purple of night. This one’s Combat Camera, my old MOS. Some cultures used to think that if someone took a picture of you, it’d steal your soul. Maybe there’s some irony floating in the Creek side of me about being a photographer for as long as I was. Well, sort of. I was the last Marine to go through the illustrator course before the MOS got merged into printing, then after a brief stint in Psyops I lat moved to video, but of the five times I’ve been overseas, I only ever went to take pictures. Needs of the corps I guess. But anyway, this ones a little bit of a selfie, or at least with the intent of showing the soul, and it’s going out to one of my old Marines. You can check out the high res version of it on my website, and I’m open for commissions if you want me to slap some paint one something for you. Until then, Semper fi.

Fallen combat camera soldier’s final images released after 4 years

Photos of a 2013 explosion in Afghanistan, taken by the combat camera soldier who died shooting them, have been released in the latest issue of Military Review, showing in harrowing detail the final moments of the photographer and the mortar crew she was documenting.

Spec. Hilda Clayton, a combat documentation production specialist (MOS 25V) assigned to the 55th Signal Co. (Combat Camera), was attached to the 4th Armored Bde. Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Div., in Laghman Provice, Afghanistan.  On July 2, 2013, she and an Afghan Army photographer were documenting a mortar validation exercise when the tube suddenly exploded.

Clayton, the Afghan Army photographer, and three other Afghan Army soldiers were killed in the blast.  The photos, released after Clayton’s family gave permission, show the milliseconds after the tube exploded but before the blast reached her and her fellow photographer.
