Tempio di Adriano [Templum Divus Hadrianus; Hadrianeum] . Campo Marzio, Roma, 2009.
One of the great pleasures of being a pedestrian in Rome is serendipitous discovery of ancient stones. This colonnade of a temple built about the year 200 CE has been incorporated into a more modern building and faces a small plaza which pre-COVID housed one of my favorite trattoria in the city. That place had been recommended to us, and as we walked to it for the first time we were faced with this remnant of the early Empire.

Giovanni Lorenzo Bernini (1598-1680) Italian
1-2 Colonnade of St Peter’s Basilica, Rome (1656-57)
Bernini was the recipient of numerous commissions by Pope Urban VIII and his influential family, the Baberini.
Among his official appointments: Curator of the papal art collections, Director of the papal foundry, Commissioner of the fountains [of Piazza Navona]. In 1629 he was appointed Chief Architect of St.Peter’s. These positions gave Bernini the opportunity to demonstrate his versatile practice throughout Rome. Bernini continued to receive commissions from the ecclesiastical hierarchies and royal families across Europe.
Colonnade of St Peter’s BasilicaThe Collonade is characteristic of Baroque monumentality and symbolism. The colonnades embrace the piazza, enclosing the audience of the faithful:
“the maternal arms of Mother Church reaching out to embrace the faithful and to return heretics to the Church” in Bernini’s words.
3 St Peter’s baldachin (canopy) (1623-24) gilt bronze 20m high.
