“坐” 新年

年味是一年一次“坐”到的。是坐在外婆家一年一次坐满人的桌子旁,是坐在一年一次见到的陌生亲戚的沙发上,是坐在一年一次去玩、却一年比一年显得更矮的秋千上。坐来谈天,坐来玩桌游,坐来喝酒,坐来一年又一年。不管坐在什么地方,还是一样要“坐”到新年。

EN Ver.

The taste of Chinese New Year is something we sit into. It’s sitting at my grandmother’s home with a table that’s full once a year. It’s sitting on an unfamiliar relative’s sofa that I see only once a year. It’s sitting on the same swing once a year, but it grows shorter each year. Sit and talk, sit and play, sit and drink, sitting together, year after year after year. No matter where we sit, we still sit into the New Year.

A/N: Originally written for a class assignment.
T/N: “坐” (sit) and “做” (to do/celebrate) are pronounced the same (zuò) in Chinese

Karate Kwon Do and LNY

So TikTok got its marketing hooks into LNY, and made things awkward this year (that “Chinese time in my life” trend wasn’t what I would call “organic”, but I digress).

Super weird that our lives are this enmeshed with marketing companies.

Anyway…

A trend I noticed this year while performing that I hadn’t noticed before is Karate Kwon Do / Shaolin Karate / Kenpo Krav Maga… Essentially American Martial Arts schools trying to capitalize on LNY. It was… crass.

Chinese Turnip Cake (Lo Bak Go, 萝卜糕)
I make this turnip cake with grated daikon, Chinese sausage, and dried shrimp, then steam and pan fry it until crispy on the outside. The key is getting the daikon to flour ratio just right so the cake is tender and moist, not tough. It is a classic dim sum appetizer dish I make every Chinese New Year, and it tastes so much better than the restaurant version.

Indulge in the rich flavours of Palm Sugar Soft Shell Crab, a delicious crab delicacy at Mansion 7. Crispy soft shell crab is perfectly coated with palm sugar glaze, creating a balance of sweet and savoury notes inspired by refined Cantonese cuisine.

[ID: A digital drawing of a brown horse with a black mane and tail, lighter brown hooves, and a small gray mark on her muzzle. She is running facing to the left. Her spine is shown over her fur, colored bright orange with flames coming off of it. There are also similarly colored flames coming from her eyes. The background is pale orange with a large light yellow circle in the center and flecks of red and white on the right and left sides, respectively. Above the horse are the words, "but for now, it's time to RUN". On the sides of the horse are the same words in Chinese: "但现在、是跑的时候". The English word "RUN" has flames on it as well. End ID]ALT

Year of the Fire Horse

This is based on an actual horse I know. She had kissing spine, a conditional usually fatal for horses. However, a local rescue brought her in and was able to give her a successful surgery. She is recovering beautifully; she has been adopted and is now able to run and be ridden again, something that most horses with kissing spine never have the chance to do.

Massive shoutout to @merthaevelynk for helping me translate the words!!

A few days behind on this one. Spent the weekend in Chinatown with the child to see the Chinese New Year parade, and explore the neighborhood for the first time.

We didn’t explore as much as I would have liked; he’s not a fan of walking. -_- hotels tend to be his favorite part of any vacation, so there’s that.

The parade itself was nice. He was a good sport about the crowd and weather for longer than I expected. We stayed on the street for about 15 minutes, then watched the rest from our window. There was a lion dance in the hotel lobby just before the parade, so that was a neat surprise.

He’s excited to go again, and has even suggested that we should move there someday. Overall, we had a good time :)

Working on a small and simple project~

I plan and hope to finish it before this year ends~

According to Google…

  • The Chinese word for fortune is 福 (fú). It represents blessings, good luck, and prosperity and is commonly displayed on red paper or decorations during the Chinese New Year to invite good fortune into the home.
  • Old coins symbolise wealth, prosperity and good fortune. These coins (often ancient, round copper or bronze pieces with a square hole in the centre) are believed to attract positive “Chi” (energy) and protect against negative energy.
  • Mandarin oranges represent wealth, good fortune and happiness. Due to their bright colour resembling gold and their round shape symbolising completeness, they are exchanged in pairs to wish recipients abundance, prosperity and “good things coming in pairs”.

i have been absolutely obsessed with this person’s shorts today. i knew of lion dances but i never realized how physical demanding this performance is and i’m so in awe of it and also how personified this creator makes their lion

i’m also just so enamored with the beast that is these lions ; w ; (wondering if it would be culturally acceptable if i felt compelled to crochet one to sit on my desk; is that taboo? idk, they’re just so dang cute ; w ; )
