Dear Pete Hegseth,

I am watching an organization which I have dedicated years of my life to be destroyed by your threats and intimidation. A man who was never a Scout, a man who has not once exhibited the values of a Scout, is making changes to my community and I can’t stand it.

In 2013, 2015, and 2017, Scouting America made changes which benefited the organization and the world around it. You are actively attempting to roll these changes back, and retroactively make my community worse. Real people are suffering because of your decisions, and I hope you lie awake at night knowing that not only are you wrong, you are someone I am ashamed to walk on this earth with.

There are over 200,000 women who are doing more for the world than you ever will. You are trying to remove them, *me*, from somewhere we rightfully deserve to be, and in the process, are making the word a worse place to be.

I believe that although it is not perfect, Scouting America is a good organization. I believe that I am a better person for having dedicated my time to it. I am watching a power hungry misogynistic bigot, threaten my organization into obedience, and it is killing me.

But before you get too excited, I have a secret to share with you. Want to hear it?

I’m still here. We’re all still here, and no matter how many uninformed men support you, most of us still know the truth. The truth that very few things can’t be undone after four years are up. You’re on a count down, and you know it. You’re pushing this hard because you know it’s only a matter of time until you and the rest of this corrupt administration are gone.

A Scout may be kind, but right now I’m angry, and I can’t wait to watch you burn in hell.

048 BSA M33 and Swallow Sidecar (1954) HSK 141 by Robert Knight
Via Flickr:
BSA M33 (1948-57) Engine 493cc SV Registration Number HSK 141 BSA ALBUM www.flickr.com/photos/45676495@N05/sets/72157623759878630… First introduced for 1948, the BSA M33 combined the B33’s overhead-valve engine and the cycle parts of the M20 sidevalve. The B33 engine closely followed B31 lines, but with larger (85mm) bore and heavier flywheels. By the late 1940s, BSA’s surviving sidevalves – the 500cc M20 and 600cc M21 – retained the rigid frame of pre-war days and were marketed for sidecar use. The ‘hybrid’ M33 was intended to provide more power in that application, which it did with ease. Produced initially with rigid frame and girder front fork, the M33 switched to BSA’s new telescopic fork in June 1948, while the plunger-suspended frame, optional from 1951, became standard on the M33 for 1956. Production ceased in 1957. Diolch am 97,172,767 o olygfeydd anhygoel, mae pob un yn cael ei werthfawrogi'n fawr. Thanks for 97,172,767 amazing views, every one is greatly appreciated. 049 BSA A65L Lightning (1971) GAM 465 J by Robert Knight
Via Flickr:
BSA A65 Lightning (1965-72) Engine 654cc OHV Parallel twin Registration Number GAM 465 J (Wiltshire) BSA SET www.flickr.com/photos/45676495@N05/albums/72157623759878630 The Lightning was designed as an all round sports machine, with an eye on the US market place. The engine was developed to improve reliability and make it quieter and less prone to oil leaks, sacrificing flat out speeds, but the machine was still capable of 108mph thanks to a close ratio gearbox and high lift camshaft. Owners did report a tendency to weave above 90mph. A situation addressed from 1969 with balanced exhaust pipes, redesigned silencer-internals, widened crankcase-half mating faces and a twin leading shoe front brake. The Lightning featured in both film and TV. In the long running TV series Boon the lead character Ken Boone rode a BSA Lightning he called White Lightning in deference to him thinking of himself as a modern day Lone Ranger and his bike, as the Lone Rangers, horse Silver. A fully faired Lightning was used in the James Bond film Thunderball, ridden by racer Bill Ivy sporting a blonde wig to disguise him as Bond girl Fiona Volpe, played by Italian actress Luciana Paluzzi the gold painted Lightning was fitted with a working rocket launcher, which in the film fired two rocket missiles to destroy the villain (Count Lippe car while he was chasing Bond. In the 1968 film If lead character Mick, played by Malcolm McDowell steals a Lightning from inside a dealers showroom and embarks on a reckless ride. Oh hey, I found something to make some people incensed

Not sure if anyone remembers or cares, but in the 90s, there was a scandal of catholic proportions. Yes, I mean that in all senses of catholic. Part of that scandal resulted in some Eagle scouts returning their medals. And it was in the news.

(Short explanation: upon attaining Eagle Scout rank, the highest rank, the scout is awarded a little metal eagle to wear on their uniform shirt. If the scout continues receiving merit badges they get a “palm” leaf to hang from the medal or some other specific part of the uniform. Eagle Scout is the highest rank and you can forever say “I am an Eagle Scout” and it means (or did mean) something.)

It was a few years after that that the BSA grand council made some decisions based on input from its member troops and boys. And the general public. The issue was banning homosexuals from joining. Like. Explicitly. What a hate filled decision! And the only “solid” excuse they had was in the Oath, at the end, where a scout is to be “morally straight”. But we all know (most) morals are subjective. Which is my stance. Just the basics, you know: follow the laws (that make society “better”), don’t kill/hurt/mame/injure others, love everyone like yourself.

I just discovered they started allowing people other than boys into the ranks (2019). That’s great! Scouting is a very structured organization, with lots of programs to keep kids engaged and interested in the world around them, from arts and crafts to science and sociology, and everything in between. It really creates a general knowledge base for a growing youth. With the addition of all genders, a scout can learn how to better interact with others better. I think that’s a very important part of growing up. Learning how to work with someone who isn’t like you. That’s important for a strong society.

<just a rant from here on>

But this asshat and his asshat administration have decided that DEIA and being “woke” are inappropriate for a progressive society. They are afraid of change, having become comfy in the 1950’s patriarchal modes they grew up in. We need to continue fighting back with punk aesthetic, and I don’t mean dressing like a punk, whatever that means to you. I mean fighting against the system of oppression being foisted on us by the “ruling” class. They are few and we are many. et e pluribus unum. Not sure why we aren’t acting like that’s the truth. From the many, one. One nation. Because there are so many different people. Because there are so many different ethnicities and cultures and beliefs. If everyone were the same, what would you think life here would be like? It wouldn’t work! It couldn’t. We have too many varied needs, so much land to cover, and not enough time in the day for everything to be the same.

Fuck. This makes me think about 1984 again, and how Big Brother encouraged people to “see something, say something”, and parents who were introduced to this were raising children to believe this. One of the scenes I vaguely remember was about a child who witnessed their parent doing something “illegal” and reporting it to the authorities. And the parent trying to play it off as a small infraction that they were only doing that once. But they were snatched up and sent to reprogramming anyway. You can’t reprogram an adult without breaking them. But you can program a child from birth. This is frightening and you should be highly aware of this happening in sections of society.

——-

oof

I thought about returning my eagle award. But then I thought how I was bisexual and some of my fellow scouts were also. I thought about how our existence didn’t really conflict with the Oath or the Motto or any of it. I didn’t return my award because I could defend my stance.

“Well, what about being morally straight? Huh!? That means ‘no gay’ right there. Only straights allowed” - sound like a you problem dude. morally straight just means to be in general alignment with society’s morality. Even though (I think) the handbook suggests a scout also be consistent with their own moral judgements. Like I said before, following (most) laws. Break the laws that hurt or restrict peoples’ freedoms, that don’t protect a person from harm. Firing a gun indoors? Not safe. Not stopping or yielding at an appropriate traffic sign? Not safe. Don’t do gay? What? Don’t serve gay? What?! These are the laws this religious “majority” want to enact, after banning trans kids from society. First no more trans, then no more gay, then no more women (relegating them to restrictions similar to The Handmaid’s Tale), making a “perfect” society of white men to make rules and keep people miserable.

this has gotten way off topic. I should really just be journaling this privately, but I think I want feedback. I need to be challenged in my views to keep myself aligned with values that match my internal values.

250 BSA 350cc B31 (1959) XLP 477 by Robert Knight
Via Flickr:
BSA 347cc B31 (1945-51) Engine 347cc OHV Registration Number XLP 437 (London) BSA ALBUM www.flickr.com/photos/45676495@N05/sets/72157623759878630… BSA’s rugged, workaday B31 was manufactured from 1945 to the end of 1959, its overhead-valve engine providing the basis for the renowned Gold Star sports roadster. At the time of its introduction, the B31 was BSA’s sole all-new model, joining the lightweight ‘C’ and heavyweight ’M’ ranges carried over from pre-war days. Produced initially with rigid frame and telescopic front fork, the B31 gained (optional) plunger rear suspension in 1949 and an all-new swinging-arm frame in '54. A good all-round performer by the standards of its time, the B31 could cruise comfortably all day at 60mph while returning 75-plus miles per gallon, virtues that endeared it to private owners and police forces alike.
