Okay, so this is a learning experience. I followed the recipe exactly and most of the croissants unrolled and all of them burnt on the bottom.

Luckily I only baked half the dough, I left the other half wrapped tightly in the fridge. And nothing wrong with the dough itself, the unburnt parts are delicious with flaky layers.

So I took a small piece of the dough out and shaped it into mini croissants. They are rising for an hour. I’m going to put them on parchment paper and reduce the oven temp by 25°F. Honestly, the hardest part is the physical effort of rolling it yesterday. If I end up making croissants a lot, my shoulders and arms are going to be buff!

I did look up some tips for easier rolling because I’m miles away from affording a machine roller. I ordered a French rolling pin and apparently if you let the dough sit on the counter for a few minutes before each roll and fold, it’s easier to deal with.

I had a rectangular piece of dough leftover the first time, so I put a few dark chocolate chips inside and rolled it up. Turned out really good! I just scraped off the burnt part with my fingernail.

Not in my charcuterie afternoon!

My friendgroup all live scattered amongst three houses within a 10 minute walk so hangouts are often low key and people pop in and out of each other’s houses at will. I wanted to do something that would bring people all together so I baked them bread!

Initially branded as my ‘bread tasting’, I invited over the whole group for my 'charcuterie afternoon’ - I even went to Sainsbury’s to buy olives, hummus, balsamic vinegar and charcuterie meats!

It was a roaring success until my housemate’s situationship gatecrashed uninvited and spent the whole time making strange comments, therefore killing any conversation that got started. Everyone ate as fast as they could, studiously avoiding eye contact with each other as not to burst out laughing and left.

My lovely afternoon and all my hard work, ruined.

So I did what any sane person would do - I hosted another, the next day when I knew the uninvited guest would be busy. 10/10 afternoon with no weird tension and I will definitely be doing that again. Plus it was a great way to procrastinate on my assignments.

Any advice on how to stop future unwanted guests very welcome though…
