The masked Hylian offered her a seat, and she accepted it, not really having a choice. Despite the other chair opposite her, the Hylian opted to instead walk in circles around her. They made a few loops before changing direction and starting to speak.
“About that stone on your necklace. Where exactly did you find it?” Their distorted voice made it difficult to discern their gender, but plenty of tone still carried through. This would be the only clue that Marilyn had to their emotion, as even their body language seemed blank.
“Why do you want to know?”
“Because, Marilyn, I have a feeling that you don’t understand the full potential of that little stone you have. I presume Beth Unico told you that it was called a Charge Stone, correct?”
Marilyn flinched very slightly at the mention of his name, but the tall Hylian seemed to pick up on the slight movement and chuckled. It was an odd sound through the distortion.
“Did something happen between you two? I already have a theory as to what happened, but I would like to hear it in your own words.”
They leaned down to look in Marilyn’s eyes, but she avoided the prompt. The Hylian straightened up and then continued to walk in circles around her.
“Marilyn finds a magic stone, and she accidentally casts a spell. Beth Unico picks up on the spell and comes out to find her. Marilyn goes to Unico’s big, wonderful house of discovery, and he offers to train her. Marilyn learns how to cast a few spells, but one night, Beth Unico seemingly goes mad and traps her. Marilyn escapes and comes crying home to her mother.” The patronizing tone cut off as they looked down at her. “Is that about right?”
Marilyn felt like she should be upset, but she only felt angry.
“What do you want from me?” She just barely kept the malice out of her voice.
“Oh, simple. You join the High Temporal Guard, and we’ll actually train you. After the trials, you can serve Hyrule with the unstoppable force that you have. You’d likely never see your family again, but I have a feeling you didn’t like them that much in the first place.”
Against her better judgment, Marilyn actually thought about it. She would be able to serve Hyrule and learn how to become one of the strongest magic users out there! She wouldn’t be able to see her family, but the member of the Guard was right; she didn’t particularly like them.
Then she thought back. Why do I need to serve Hyrule? What has Hyrule ever done for me? To join this High Temporal Guard, to put on that mask, those robes, and lose my identity, it’s not a very good bargain, especially considering the alternative.
There was suddenly some shouting outside, along with some clashing noises, but the Guard stood just as stoic as ever, waiting for an answer. Marilyn straightened her back, cleared her throat, and then…
What happens if I say no? They aren’t just going to let me go, scott-free.
Well, it’s worth a shot.
Marliyn looked the Guard straight in the eyes(or at least where they should be on the mask) and said, “No.”
The Hylian shifted. “Hm. Disappointing, but expected. Well, considering how you have denied our generous offer, I’ll be taking that.”
They reached out and went to grab the Charge Stone off of Marilyn’s necklace, but she shot a Stasis at their hand on reflex and shoved her chair back. She jumped backward and readied herself for a fight, instinctively clutching her hand despite the lack of a weapon.
The Guard, seeming completely unfazed, broke the spell with a gesture from their other hand, and then with a flick of their hand, shot two Stasis spells at her feet.
The yelling outside got louder, and one of the guards burst in. “So terribly sorry for intruding but they’re back!”
The tall Hylian growled, then strode out of the tent, their white cloak billowing behind them.
The moment they left, Marilyn concentrated on the bonds around her ankles. She had already tried struggling, but that had seemed to make it worse. So she decided to fight fire with fire. Or rather, Time with Time.
She concentrated on the spell, looking for any weak spots, but found none. She decided just to brute force the spell and started pushing on it. It didn’t budge.
She stopped pushing for a moment to rethink her strategy, and it became apparent to her that the fight outside was becoming increasingly violent.
She then remembered back to her training with the Sage, and thought through the different things she could do with her spells.
Recall, Stasis, I feel like there was one more… right! I made the missiles speed up!
She concentrated again and then tried speeding up the Stasis. Sure enough, after only a bit of pulling, the spell shattered.
She burst outside the tent, and stepped into the middle of a warzone.
