In medieval European folklore, the Scarlet King is a tyrannical ruler with a red, blood-stained hand. This red hand is often said to be the mark of a curse or the embodiment of his power over life and death.
The king’s red hand represents violence, guilt, and the bloodshed he causes in his conquest for power In one of Heracles’ labours, he kills the many-headed hydra. As he defeats the hydra, the blood from the creature, described as a venomous red, stains Heracles’ hands, symbolising both the horror of his task and his divine strength. The red on his hands represents both the physical labor of the task and the bloodshed involved in achieving great feats.
