Listing date on the VLR: 03/17/1999
The Australia Furnace was important during the iron industry in the 19th century. The Australia Furnace is tied to the nerby Lucy Selina Furnace. E & B.J. Jorfan and Co. stopped using the Lucy Selina Furnace in order to construct a more modern furnace. They built the Australia Furnace in the 1850’s. It was bigger and able to accommodate a hotter temp.
Though it is no longer standing, it still features the process of iron processing. Located on the Simpson Creek near Lucy Selina, the Tredger Iron Works in Richmond supplied the furnace. J.R. Anderson of Tredger bought the furnace during the Civil War. Soon, the operations were ruined due to the difficult transfer of materials. Longdale Iron Co. bought where both Australia and Lucy Selina were located. They removed the Australia to establish a mining hamilt but Lucy Selina is in operation.
