On January 7, 2025 Meta made the announcement that they are ending their third party fact-checking program and moving to a Community Notes model.
With this, they follow a similar community-driven content moderation program launched by X (formerly Twitter) in 2021 that became widespread on X in 2023.

This, despite research showing how the ‘community notes’ model –which combines automation with…

#UsabilityFail: Wrong shades of grey

Usability Fail: Wrong shades of grey.

If you want your audience to read your content, start with the basics: Make it readable.

Unlike this example:

I cannot even read the grey font on the slightly lighter background.
My watermark is more prominent than their copy.

You can say what you want about design, if it doesn’t follow function, it fails.
What is the point of fancy looking copy if you can’t read it.
This clearly is a…

#TechBlog: Twitter is clearly in it for the money with repetitive X linking to subscribe

#TechBlog: Twitter is clearly in it for the money with repetitive X linking to subscribe.

#Twitter #ElonMusk #overcharging #BlockElon

When I see a repetition of design, in my mind pops: A glitch in the matrix!
Twitter presents us with two X:
One slightly bigger X directing to ‘Home’ at the top, and
One slightly smaller x further down linking to ‘Subscribe’.
And then there are more X, but those are just the ones we always used to use to close a window.

#DarkPatterns: LinkedIn lures with more when there isn’t any

Dark Patterns: LinkedIn lures with more when there isn’t any.

I recommend LinkedIn, as it’s a great professional networking platform for jobs and business.
But also LinkedIn has its flaws, especially since it was taken over by Microsoft:
LinkedIn ‘0 Activity’ but prompts to ‘Show all activity’.

While the statement “This person hasn’t posted yet” with the added explanation: “Recent post this person shares will be displayed here.” should be enough…

#DarkPatterns: Facebook limits control over Pages management

Dark Patterns: Facebook limits control over Pages management.

Facebook keeps on updating my Pages, but for what I only learn afterwards.

It’s not like I have a choice. Facebook would rather lock your account in order to force you to submit to new practices.

This time Facebook announces it is separating Page activity from your profile.
#UsabilityFail: Less control over Pages because FB separates Pages from profile.

What is being sold as an update is…

Why a Naming Convention: Just the date renders no search results

Saving Covid-19 stats from the Robert Koch Institute shows only the date as suggestion for the PDF name.

For time-sensitive content it is of course important to include the date.
Like in the above example, where the statistics only apply to a certain date in time.

But anyone who downloads this Robert Koch Institute report will struggle to find it again: Who remembers a specific date on…

#TranslationFail: Bing Translator gets it wrong and translates ‘to fast’ with 'too fast’

Translation Fail: Bing Translator gets it wrong and translates 'to fast’ with 'too fast’.

#Localisation rather than #Translation - #GoodPractice #Advice brought to you by Yours *TrulyJuly*.

#TranslationFail #Fail #Language #LostInTranslation #BadTranslation #PoorTranslation #TranslationGoneWrong #LocalisationRatherThanTranslation #GrammarNerd #TechTuesday #tech #digital #usability #UX #UserExperience #MT #MachineTranslation #AI

Ridiculous! I want to know the translation of the verb ‘to fast’ and Bing Translator keeps on interpreting my request as a spelling error, because it translates ‘too fast’.
How dare this stupid AI to assume rather that I misspell than to answer my exact query.
Even using quotation marks to group together ‘to fast’ doesn’t deter Bing Translator from getting it wrong.
Bing translates ‘to fast’…

#GoodPracticeTip: Always Proofread Your Developer

#GoodPracticeTip: Always Proofread Your Developer.

#Good #Practice #Tip brought to you by Yours *TrulyJuly*.

#GoodPractice #YoursTrulyJuly #TechTuesday #HowTo #tech #digital #DigitalMarketing #OnlineMarketing #usability #UX #UserExperience #password #signup #Proofread #ProofreadFail

Having worked for 20+ years in the media industry doing everything content, I have learned that it’s a good idea to proofread your Developer.

Every industry has its own specific jargon.
Tech lingo is an extreme example, because developers do not only talk nerd amongst each other, they even talk to computers.
And it is all too easy that some of that coding language seeps through to the end…

Why a Naming Convention: Because just the date isn't good enough

The South African government publishes useful Coronavirus infographics.

But try find them on the internet!

Here is why they fail in findability: The name of the file is only the date, with no other reference.

This infographic is useful, but can't be found. When I save it, it shows why: A mere date as a file name does not work.

There are probably gazillions of other files out there with the…

#Good #Practice #Tip: 'Choose an option' should indeed offer some options

#Good #Practice #Tip: ‘Choose an option’ for #gender should indeed #offer some #options. #Equality #nonbinary #genderfluid #pansexual #usability #ThursdayGrind

We live in the 21st century where it should be possible to choose your gender like you choose your clothes for the day.

Vocabulary is expanding to include all facets of gender identity.

Usability is catering for non-binary and gender-fluid people.

So if you offer to ‘Choose an option’ for gender, you better make sure there are some options to choose from.

In our modern societies, only…
