L'Agenzia Spaziale Italiana (ASI) e l'ENEA hanno avviato il progetto SELENE (Sistema Energetico Lunare con l’Energia Nucleare), mirato a sviluppare piccoli reattori nucleari a fissione per fornire energia elettrica stabile ai futuri insediamenti lunari.
Questo progetto, selezionato nel 2023 tra i vincitori di un bando dell'ASI per esperimenti scientifici lunari, coinvolge anche il Dipartimento di Energia del Politecnico di Milano e Thales Alenia Space Italia.
Perché il nucleare sulla Luna
Anche in vista di una permanenza stabile dell’umanità sulla Luna, l'iniziativa nasce dall'esigenza di superare le limitazioni delle attuali tecnologie energetiche basate sull'energia solare, che, a causa dell'alternanza di 14 giorni di luce e 14 di buio sulla Luna, non garantiscono un approvvigionamento energetico continuo.
Il Moon Energy Hub (MEnH), infrastruttura centrale del progetto, utilizzerà Surface Nuclear Reactors (SNR) per assicurare una fonte energetica affidabile per le attività lunari.
Questi tipi di reattori, pensati per operare sulla superficie di corpi celesti come la Luna o Marte, sono allo studio da diverso tempo.
Musk insiste: nel 2026 la prima Starship su Marte
Una proposta della NASA prevede un reattore alimentato con HALEU (High-Assay Low-Enriched Uranium), che ha per combustibile pellet di uranio nitrato arricchito al 20%, per ottenere una potenza termica di circa 250 kW al fine di fornire 40 kW elettrici per 10 anni. La temperatura operativa sarebbe di 700°C sul lato caldo e di 150°C sul lato freddo. La massa totale del sistema si attesterebbe sui 10.000 kg.
C’è anche la soluzione cinese del China Institute of Atomic Energy, che propone sempre 40 kW elettrici ottenuti da una potenza termica nominale di 210 kW. Il combustibile a pellet usato è il diossido di uranio arricchito al 90% in U-235.
Con una massa stimata di solo 3.172 kg, il reattore avrebbe una vita operativa di 8 anni.

Il progetto SELENE, della durata di tre anni e che coinvolgerà quattro centri di ricerca ENEA: Frascati, Casaccia, Bologna e Brasimone, prevede lo sviluppo di tecnologie avanzate nei settori della sensoristica, dell'automazione e della trasmissione di potenza wireless.
Inoltre, si focalizzerà sulla progettazione dei sistemi di conversione e distribuzione dell'energia, nonché sugli aspetti legati al decommissioning e alla supply chain, con l'obiettivo di creare una roadmap per l'industrializzazione dell'infrastruttura.
