Firmness, wisdom, and cunning—these are the qualities that enabled the Moldavian ruler Stephen III, who reigned from 1457 to 1504, to transform the weakened Moldavian Principality into a strong medieval state, one that fought equally with the Ottoman Empire and became a Christian bastion in Eastern Europe. Stephen the Great fought in 36 battles, although he never conquered foreign lands.

Stephen III’s greatest achievement was the centralization of power in Moldavia. Only in this way could the principality maintain its independence amidst the turmoil of its more powerful neighbors—the Ottoman Empire, Hungary, Poland, and the Crimean Khanate. During the first five years of his reign, the “hospodar” (as he was known) waged no wars, focusing solely on internal affairs, strengthening state authority, combating noble factions, and expanding the holdings of his domain. Land was Moldavia’s most valuable resource. Due to the prolonged succession turmoil, the aristocrats became the largest property owners in the country.
The source of the civil strife was the confusion surrounding the succession to the throne. A new ruler could be the son of the previous ruler, but his candidacy had to be approved by the aristocrats. The magnates used their influence, striking deals with numerous contenders, around whom court factions formed. Stefan put an end to this tradition, which was detrimental to the principality.
Throughout his long reign, the Moldavian ruler repeatedly made sharp diplomatic turns, forging alliances with one neighbor after another. For example, he initially paid tribute to the Turks, but later called on the Ottomans for aid during the war with the Poles. While maneuvering between powerful neighbors, the Moldavian ruler merely wanted to protect his own country from unnecessary destruction and bloodshed.

Among Stephen’s victories on the battlefield, the most notable were the Battle of Baia in 1467 (the last Hungarian attempt to conquer Moldavia failed, with King Matthias Corvinus wounded three times and only miraculously surviving); the Battle of Lipnik in 1470 (a Tatar raid was stopped); the Battle of Vaslui in 1475 (the rout of the Ottomans, who lost 40,000-50,000 men); and the Battle of Kosminski Forest in 1497 (the defeat of the Polish King Jan I). Among dozens of successful campaigns, he suffered only two defeats to the Turks, when they enjoyed numerical superiority.

After the victory near Vaslui, Pope Sixtus IV, in his congratulatory address, called Stephen the Great “Christ’s athlete.” European rulers and the papal curia praised Stephen and promised him assistance in the fight against the Muslims, but no one seriously considered a general crusade. Left alone against the formidable empire, the Moldavian ruler ultimately agreed to pay tribute (harach) to Sultan Mehmed II, while remaining an autocratic ruler who managed to protect his subjects from further punitive invasions. Moldavia finally became a Turkish vassal much later, in the early 18th century.
The principality’s population was Orthodox. However, Catholics (Hungarians and German colonists) also lived there. Stefan did not allow Catholic priests to spread their faith among the Orthodox. It is therefore not surprising that the ruler eventually became close to Ivan III, Grand Prince of Moscow. The rulers maintained an active correspondence. Stefan’s daughter, Elena, married Ivan III’s heir, Ivan the Young. In 1497, the Moscow prince intervened in the Polish-Moldavian conflict and stopped the invasion of Lithuanian troops rushing to the aid of the Poles.
True, their friendship cooled after Elena was imprisoned. The death of Ivan the Young left Ivan III with a choice: to make his other son, Vasily (the future Vasily III), or his grandson, Dmitry (who was also Stefan’s grandson), his heir. Initially, the prince favored Dmitry. The boy was even declared co-ruler. However, Elena soon lost the court struggle and was imprisoned along with her son. Elena died in prison in 1505, Dmitry in 1509.
Under Stephen the Great, Moldova became a transit trade zone between Western and Eastern Europe. Once the country became safe for foreign merchants, they eagerly shipped their goods through. Business flourished in the Black Sea port of Cetatea Albă. Moldova also sold its surplus goods: agricultural products, wine, and honey. Relations with Wallachian cities intensified. Documents signed by Stephen have survived, attesting to privileges for merchants in Lvоv. Salt mines were developed. High-grade silver coins began to be minted in the capital of the principality, Suceava. To secure the principality’s internal borders, a system of nine fortresses was created, encircling the country on all four sides.

After the death of Stephen the Great, a Moldavian folk song emerged that ended with the line, “To whom are you leaving us, Master?” His 47-year reign, despite external challenges, had a beneficial effect on the country. The principality experienced its medieval heyday, and the ruler’s name became legendary. Even today, Stephen remains a hero of literature, film, and folklore. In the northeast of modern-day Moldova, a 700-year-old oak tree still stands, known locally as the Oak of Stephen the Great—according to legend, he rested beneath its canopy after one of his battles.

A nation will be strong when it has a fair and just king. A nation will be weak when it has a king who is selfish and demands gifts. [Easy-to-Read Version]
If a king is fair, he makes his country strong, but if he takes gifts dishonestly, he tears his country down. [New Century Version]
When the king is concerned with justice, the nation will be strong, but when he is only concerned with money, he will ruin his country. [Good News Translation]

leader: melek 4428 (Hebrew) sovereign, king, chieftain, ruler, prince, noble; any person, from a high national ruler to a petty clan leader, who exercises authority over others is required to provide covenant fidelity, limited taxation, and heartfelt personal devotion for God’s statutes and ordinances in order to bring God’s blessings for those under his authority.
justice: mishpat 4941 (Hebrew) judgment, ordinance, law, decision, judicial verdict; the Lord’s own just character and the standards by which human society is to be ordered. A nation’s welfare depends on keeping these since obedience in acting justly, loving mercy, and walking humbly with God brings blessings, while violation such as oppressing the poor, perverting courts, or abusing orphans and widows invites a curse to political or religious leaders who turn justice upside down.
gift: terumah 8641 (Hebrew) offering, contribution, tribute, allotment; the act of consecrating or setting apart something valuable, the first and the best, not as a compulsory tax but a joyous act of worship for the exclusive use of the Lord, including materials, produce, silver, and land. Those who demand, and take, “gifts” they do not deserve and have no basis for receiving apart from the power they wield are guilty of theft and will bring God’s discipline upon those who repent, and judgment upon those who do not.
overthrow: haras 2040 (Hebrew) utterly tear down, destroy, break up, ruin; an aggressive act of demolishing something that already exists. a decisive, often violent removal of whatever stands opposed to God, always as a result of human rebellion against God’s order, and His zeal to cleanse, judge, and ultimately rebuild.

Johann Struensee was born on August 5, 1737. The boy was bright, had an excellent memory, and was a diligent student. His parents provided him with a good education. Johann chose the medical profession. None of his family could have imagined the role he would play in Danish political life.

Struensee held progressive views in medicine and advocated smallpox vaccination. The young man became the personal physician of King Christian VII, who had suffered from mental illness from a young age. He was prone to outbursts of anger, and the monarch often got into fights. He also drank heavily and experienced hallucinations. In one famous incident, Christian and his friends destroyed a brothel.
According to some researchers, the monarch suffered from schizophrenia. He was haunted by the idea that his enemies were plotting murder, suffered from masochistic tendencies, and even self-inflicted injuries. Struensee helped the king overcome his fears. Christian developed a trust in him. Queen Caroline Matilda also harbored warm feelings for the physician. She married Christian at the age of 15.
Three years after their wedding, Caroline Matilda became Struensee’s mistress. She actively involved her favorite in state affairs. Christian was unable to assume control of the state due to illness, and Struensee eventually gained unlimited power. The king granted his favorite the authority to issue decrees in his name.
The relationship between these three is captured in Christian Sartman’s painting “Scene at the Court of Christian VII.” The queen and her lover play chess, while Christian lies on a sofa, teasing a parrot. With this bold subject, the artist risked the wrath of the royal family. He was reportedly offered a large sum for the painting, in order to hide it from prying eyes.

Struensee set about implementing reforms. These included establishing equality before the courts, freedom of the press, the prohibition of torture and corporal punishment, freedom of religion, and equal rights for legitimate and illegitimate children. The politician banned gambling and fought embezzlement. Hospitals for the poor were built with public funds, and court expenses were reduced. Mandatory medical examinations were introduced for brothel workers. Thanks to Struensee, peasants’ in-kind dues were replaced by monetary ones. The queen’s favorite, due to his active work, made many enemies among the Danish nobility. It is likely that Struensee fathered a daughter, Louise Augusta, with the queen.
Christian’s condition gradually worsened. The English priest and scholar Thomas Malthus recounted how the monarch was reviewing a military parade: “He was treated like an idiot. The court officers were ordered not to answer him. Some of those present saw him talking very rapidly and making faces at the officer who was one of the guards at the tent, but the officer maintained a deadly serious expression and made no reply.”
Struensee carried out his reforms with extreme harshness, disregarding anyone’s interests, opinions, or desires. While cutting government spending, for example, he mercilessly dismissed a multitude of officials without any pension. Struensee’s disregard for the Danish language further damaged him. All decrees were drafted in German, and all “colleges,” with the exception of the “Danish,” used German exclusively as the language of government and business. Petitions of all kinds addressed to government agencies also had to be written in German; otherwise, they would not be read or acted upon. The complete freedom granted to the press primarily harmed Struensee himself. In this way, his opponents, who were not shy in their attacks on Struensee, gained more and more supporters in the country. The birth of the queen’s second child, Princess Louise, in 1771, and the general belief in the favorite’s paternity, particularly contributed to the growth of his unpopularity.
Several outbreaks of popular discontent erupted, with Struensee displaying weakness, instability, and a lack of moral and political courage and tact. This emboldened the hostile court party, led by Christian VII’s stepmother, the Dowager Queen Juliana Maria of Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel, her son, Crown Prince Frederick, his secretary, later one of the leading statesmen, Ove Höch-Guldberg, and many high-ranking officials. This party decided to stage a palace coup.
On the night of January 17, 1772, after a court ball, the Dowager Queen, the Crown Prince, and their supporters entered the King’s bedroom, awakened him, and forced him to sign arrest warrants prepared by Guldberg. Struensee and his chief collaborator, Enevold Brandt, were subsequently arrested and imprisoned in the fortress, while Queen Caroline Matilda was taken to Kronborg Castle.
The coup was greeted with general rejoicing in the capital. A special commission was appointed to investigate and try Struensee. He immediately confessed to his affair with the Queen, and he and Brandt were sentenced to loss of honor and death for their “crimes against majesty.” The sentence was carried out on April 28: Brandt and Struensee were first beheaded, then handcuffed, and then their bodies were quartered and displayed on the wheel. The king, as evident from a signed drawing he made three years later, regretted the deaths of Struensee and Brandt and his failure to “save them both.”
Through Princess Louise Augusta of Denmark, officially recognized as the daughter of Christian VII, Struensee may be an ancestor of the current kings Carl XVI Gustaf of Sweden and Philip VI of Spain.
