Aleister “Mr.” Crowley (1875–1947) was a notorious British occultist, ceremonial magician, and mountaineer who founded the philosophy of Thelema, summarized as “Do what thou wilt”. Dubbed “the wickedest man in the world” by the press, he was a key influencer on 20th-century pop culture, appearing on The Beatles’ Sgt. Pepper cover.

Boston Manor- SUNDIVER

This is the second half of the double album. I wasn’t sure what to expect, but I enjoyed the second half better than the first half.

Boy have I been on the FRITZ with this place hello

I kinda just forgot to update this place as I keep getting more and more records and my backlog keeps growing and last night I finally did a great round of records so here’s a lightning round post!

Knight Time is a groovy record I had found just yesterday and it’s full of upbeat and soulful ballads and grooves that were really nice to listen to, nothing too memorable but it was all good stuff

Sunshine Superman is a record I found in the $4 bin of docs and also the first Donovan record I’ve heard, it’s very folk-like and overall a pleasant record to be honest, I found it scratched up heavily to a point i thought it would skip horribly on side one, but at worst it just has loud crackle. It also came in a SGT PEPPERS inner sleeve

The Pleasure Principle is a very synth heavy new wave album that I thought was pretty good, nothing really great except a few standout tracks but a good listen nonetheless, also found at the $4 bin of docs records

Diana Ross’ self titled is an exceptional Motown record that is BOOKING with its orchestra and soulful lyrics while also retaining that classic Motown sound beat a lot of their records had at the time. I honestly think 1970 was like an insane year for the record label with how much great stuff they were releasing that year (signed sealed delivered, ABC, the magnificent 7, Still Waters Run Deep, Diana Ross). Yet another $4 bin record docs really had a wonderful selection this time around

Another $4 bin and its Kool and the gang at what I can only describe at their usual, it’s groovy and packed full of sound with wonderful trumpet work and synth work on some tracks, it’s a very fun album even if some of it feels like they’re trying to recreate the magic of “open sesame” , fantastic album all things considered

Boston Manor- DATURA

This ended up becoming basically the first half of a double album. It’s a little dark and moody, but still good.

My newly acquired 20th anniversary AFYCSO vinyl! I hadn’t even realized that they had released this outside of the box set (I went looking right after it came out) but discovered it about a week ago from a post on this lovely hellsite! The very same day, I popped into a record store and found it. I already have the original and decided I didn’t need a remaster or anything. However, at the time, I hadn’t realized that there were the demos too and that was all it took for me to go out and pick it up today. I was worried it wouldn’t still be there, as it’s been about a week and the store’s in a pretty busy place, so I shot a quick prayer to jon & ryan & spencer & brendon and went. Lo and behold, it sat there waiting for me. This is the red apple variant (apparently an EU version? I’m Canadian lol) and it’s got 2 LPs, so I’ll go over each individually.

FIRST, the remastered original LP. Not much to say about this one, it’s beautiful and gorgeous and lovely and *mwah*. The sleeve is the album cover and the label is the same as it is on the other version I have (which I may post later today or tomorrow). Sounds wonderful. The colour is vibrant and fits so well with the album.

And now, the demos. The sleeves are really cool (not what I expected!) and the labels are similar. Same colour, same sound, no notes. I love these demos soooo much and it’s a totally different experience to hear it off of a record.

Boston Manor- GLUE

This is where the band started to remind me of Brand New. GLUE sounds very different from their previous albums again and has much more aggression to it.

Album Review #41: Chuck Mangione // Bellavia // 1975

It’s been a few months since we’ve gotten Chuck on rotation. Last time was all the way back on album review #4! How far we’ve come! Mangione’s music always fills me with his optimistic, relentless zest for life. Let’s take a look!

“Bellavia” is the maiden name of Chuck’s mother, and the namesake of this album. One thing I also think that’s neat is the little disclaimer in the production credits: “This album was recorded "live” in the studio without overdubs or added instrumentation.“ Not to say that I don’t love a super polished, highly produced album, but it’s also cool to hear these more "raw” albums as well. What you’re hearing is what was actually played the day the tapes were rolling. It also doesn’t show up super well in my photo, but the cover of this album has a really neat metallic foil texture on the silver and copper embellishments. I like it when albums play with their medium.

This music is, of course, fantastic. Mangione is a phenomenal player and writer. The group gels so well, and you can tell they’re all having a blast. Special shout out to Joe LaBarbera on drums, (especially for his solo in “Dance of the Windup Toy”) and Chip Jackson on bass. A tight rhythm section is THE #1 most important thing you can have in a group, in my opinion. But as a tuba player, I may be a bit biased!

My favorite track on this album, of course, is the title track. “Bellavia” is a powerful, earnest outpouring of love towards his mother.

You can take a listen here. (Tumblr’s content match strikes again… I would argue that this constitutes fair use, but I don’t think it’s worth making a stink about.)

From the notes on the back of the jacket,

“Bellavia is a song I found in me that feels like my mother. It’s my Mother’s Day gift to her. In fact, all the music in this album is seasoned with a spirit much like the festive feelings that have touched everyone who has known my parents.”

Until next time, keep spinning!

“Runaway” by Kanye West is considered a self-aware anthem addressing his own flaws, ego, and strained relationship with the media rather than just a breakup song. It features a haunting, minimalist piano loop and a famous 3-minute distorted outro designed to sound like a crying, humanized instrument.
