AI being used as an excuse for layoffs seems a reasonable assumption. And there are people warning that OpenAI will be running out of money by next year.
Government Executive - Trump’s return-to-office mandate exempted feds with disabilities. Many are being ordered to work in-person anyway Some agencies have put new conditions on granting telework as a reasonable accommodation for federal employees with disabilities. January 8, 2026 “My job is 100% sedentary. I’m in front of a computer all day, every day,” he said. “There was nothing at home that I couldn’t do that required me to be in the office.” All that changed when Trump became president, and agencies began implementing stricter in-person work requirements. Jackson didn’t begin working from the office full-time until May because he initially participated in the administration’s deferred resignation program for federal employees, but DOJ later approved his request to rescind his acceptance of the separation incentive. He said that working in-person five days per week was “difficult but manageable,” though he did sometimes need to use short-term medical telework or take sick leave when his symptoms flared up. After he decided to stay at the agency, Jackson’s supervisor told him to resubmit an existing reasonable accommodation he had that permitted flexible hours (e.g. 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. instead of 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.) to ensure it aligned with the return-to-office policy. So Jackson on May 22, 2025, included in his submission a request to telework three days per week like he did prior to the policy change under the Trump administration. His request for telework was denied after three business days because, according to the document, the accommodation would remove an essential function of his position. Eric Pines, an attorney who specializes in representing federal employees with disabilities, said that a rejection after three days to a reasonable accommodation request for telework would be the quickest response he’s seen in his 30-year career. “This is definitely unusual,” he told Government Executive by email. “I would be very suspicious that it was not reviewed properly.”
Return To Office is not about “essential functions” suddenly requiring “in person magic”, it’s about propping up the people making money renting the government commercial office space, and about fossil fuel industry cronies who want everyone forever in pointless unnecessary commutes.
So sick of hearing about the magic of in-person.
The Empire City Wire - Jan 1, 2026 - Written By The Content Team - The Hypocrisy Of RTO In A Growing Offshored Workforce Return-to-office mandates are back, and they’re louder than ever. CEOs are penning company-wide memos about the “magic of collaboration,” middle managers are booking mandatory in-person brainstorms, and badge-swipe data is being analyzed like it’s a key performance metric. But there’s a question hanging in the air that no one at the top seems interested in answering: If half the team is offshore, why does my physical presence in this office matter?
My letter to reps:
There should be regulations that employers can’t do Return to Office Mandates for people in the United States, if they have some number of offshored jobs in other countries that are working remotely. It’s obvious hypocrisy to say in-office work is necessary if the company has already outsourced so much work offshore.
Please feel free to copy or repurpose for your own letters to reps.
Welcome back to the office! Unfortunately, there’s nowhere for you to sit.

And we know that employees weren’t happy about being called back to the bedbug infested office because that’s what leads to incidents like this leaking to journalists.
WIRED - Zoë Schiffer Oct 20, 2025 2:42 PM Google Has a Bedbug Infestation in Its New York Offices Employees at the company’s Chelsea campus were told to stay home after exterminators found “credible evidence” of an infestation. Google employees working at the company’s Chelsea campus in New York City received a notice on Sunday alerting them to a possible bedbug outbreak at the office. Exterminators arrived at the scene with a sniffer dog “and found credible evidence of their presence,” according to an email obtained by WIRED. The email was sent to all Google employees in New York on behalf of the company’s environmental, health, and safety team. Employees were told to avoid the office until the treatment was complete. On Monday morning, they were allowed to return. Google is performing additional inspections at other Google campuses in New York, including buildings at the company’s Hudson Square campus, “out of an abundance of caution,” the email says.
And of course they claim doing anything at all is “out of an abundance of caution” which is, at this point, I think a good example of a thought terminating cliche.
Elite Panic. Big shots have different goals than the rest of us. Politicians should be representatives, businesses shouldn’t lead, even billionaires can’t seem to buy common sense, and tech won’t save us. Chloe Humbert Jul 13, 2023 At the start of the pandemic I remember people in charge - government officials and such - they kept saying the phrase “in an abundance of caution” - as if to say that they were acting with an amount of caution in excess to what they thought was needed. The worst part was that very often it seemed their “abundance of caution” was clearly wholly inadequate.I think some of us misinterpreted the panic of officials scrambling to quiet possible fear as being a sign that they felt humbly not up to the task. But in retrospect that does not appear to be the case. It appears it was pure elite panic. They just simply feared the public more than the disease. So they were trying to “calm people down” with, essentially, dishonesty. Hospitals becoming overwhelmed or people dying wasn’t what they were worried about the most. They were worried workers would actually get treated humanely with safety measures. Someone in a union told me their employer was busy hedging because protecting worker health & safety might set a precedent going forward, and they didn’t want to risk that. Seems plausible.
There’s an constant hissing of the HVAC system, but at least that comes with a view out of a window. Not everyone is so lucky to have a cubicle with a window.
Not everyone is so lucky to have a cubicle.
Traffic isn’t too bad yet - it’s only noon. Cars come and go and try to parallel park before giving up and driving off to try somewhere else.
I smell my lunch through my mask - last nights leftover pasta, freshly microwaved. It smells deeply unappetizing right now. I stir it to even out the heat, but I can’t bring myself to bring the fork to my lips just yet. I don’t know that I’d want to if it was my own birthday cake, but I’ll choke it down in a bit.
I’m eating at my desk. Most of us eat at our desks. Some people chat and laugh. Others are microwaving their own lunches. Keyboards continue to clack away.
Someone coughs. I don’t bother to look to see if they’re wearing a mask - almost no one does, even when they’re sick.
A couple of my coworkers have started masking when sick, I appreciate them for it. Perhaps my vigilance made them think differently, perhaps they pity me and just want to bring me a little comfort. It feels like the bare minimum to me, but the executives think differently.
“If you’re too sick to work, take a sick day and stay home!”
I wonder if they bother to think through the implications of what that means. Do they know and not care? Do they not care and so don’t care to know? Do they know and care and have a gun to their head? Do they know and actively want to make things worse, out of hate or spite or motives of self enrichment?
The edge of the table is too sharp to be comfortable, and too rounded to complain about. The underside has metal bars, structural for the sit-stand mechanism, but at least it gives some choice in its discomfort. Do I set it lower so my neck and shoulders aren’t in pain for poor ergonomics, or do I raise it so my knees crash into the metal bar? I do neither and instead twist to the side, for a different kind of discomfort. I’d complain, but all I’d be told is to choose a different desk. I’ve already tried them all, and this is the best of the bunch.
I gaze out the window again. A single car drives by, too slowly for the impatient driver in the pickup truck behind him who runs the light and swerves into the oncoming lane to pass him. Thankfully an empty lane.
I wish people weren’t so selfish.
I wish I weren’t so selfish.
I look back at my lunch, no longer steaming. I should eat it. I wish I didn’t have to.
If I don’t eat, I’ll not be in a better mood. It won’t help me lose a little weight - I’ll just eat more later to make up for it.
I have to take off the mask to eat it, as I’ve done dozens of time before. Most of the time, I don’t even get sick from doing so. I wish I didn’t have to.
People ask me why I still mask. They ask me if I’m sick. I wish I could reply and ask if they mask when they are sick, but that would be rude.
I don’t want to mask. It’s not much extra annoyance, but it is some. It all adds up. I’ve yet to find a solution to the glasses problem, so I don’t wear my glasses in the office. But, the mask adds some level of protection. Both from the many who care more about their own comfort than protecting those around them, and those who care but care more about fitting in.
The funny thing is, even when I take off this 3M v-flex, I’m still wearing my other mask. It also protects me, and it also brings me discomfort to wear.
No one asks me about that one though.
having a real in-person conversation at work and boss tells a joke, and I get it, and it’s funny, and i’m laughing hysterically on the inside, but all he can see is me looking away in some kind of daze. So, he says, “It was a joke,” and I say, “I know. I was laughing so hard just now, but it was on the inside. I’m still learning how to do that so that you can tell when you’re looking at me from the outside. It’s just weird. The in-person. You know?” He stops. He stares. Backs away. Walks away. Then, and only then do I bust out laughing. Oh my.

Today is my RTO day.
It was originally scheduled for July 28, but I moved it to Wednesday due to some personal reasons—and honestly, because I got lazy last Monday. 😅
Also, since it’s super cold in the office and it makes you extra sleepy, I started binge-watching the 9-1-1 series while working. It helped keep me awake—and a little entertained too.
📸 1st Pic – That’s what our office looks like.
It’s a good thing no one’s beside me—the introvert in me is at peace… unless you’re my bestie. 🤣
📸 2nd Pic – Our sleeping pods!
The male sleeping pods are on the other side, and the female ones are on the right. I planned to nap for just an hour, but when I woke up and checked the time, I had slept for almost 2 hours which was basically time to go home already. 😅
📸 3rd Pic – Hot Chocolate!
Before going home, I always make sure I’m fully awake and not sleepy, since I take Joyride motorcycle rides to save money. (Yes, budget life!) And of course, I wear my AirPods while riding. 🎧🛵
RTO might be tiring sometimes, but finding comfort in little things—like naps, shows, and chocolate—makes it manageable. One step closer to the weekend! ✨🥂
