NHK FM “My favorite album” LEVEL3 by Perfume 2026.03.16
Guest: Daisuke Tohyama

The album contains 14 tracks, and right in the center sits a song that, for me, defines the entire album. That track is: “Party Maker.” Whenever Perfume performed live—especially leading up to their 2025 hiatus—“Party Maker” was the song they would play at the key moment of the show. The crowd would raise their hands together, and the energy would just surge through the entire venue. The track itself runs about seven minutes on the album.

Technically it wasn’t labeled as the lead single, but honestly, calling it a centerpiece of the album wouldn’t be an exaggeration at all. In fact, I sometimes feel a connection between this track and Underworld’s “Two Months Off.” It’s funny how the playlist ended up flowing that way today. Either way, this song absolutely blows the roof off when it plays. If you’re listening at home, or on the radio with headphones, this might be the moment to turn the volume up just a little.

Interestingly, there aren’t actually that many vocal lines in the song. But even in the instrumental sections, you can still feel the emotions of the three members—a-chan, Kashiyuka, and Nocchi.

It’s incredible.

Although LEVEL3 is filled with exciting, uplifting tracks, I personally feel a strong sense of melancholy running through it as well. Much of that feeling comes from the emotional impact of “Dream Land.”

Because of that ending, the album leaves you with a bittersweet aftertaste—a sense of quiet sadness as it fades out.

And that emotional rise and fall is part of what makes LEVEL3 so special.
You feel your own emotions being carried along with the music until you arrive at that final moment.

NHK FM “My favorite album” LEVEL3 by Perfume 2026.03.16
Guest: Daisuke Tohyama

The first time I ever saw Perfume was in September 2007. I happened to be in Osaka for a comedy job. After finishing work, I returned to my hotel and turned on the TV. An NHK music program called PopJam was on.

Suddenly I saw three cute girls performing with a strange, almost robotic choreography—set to an incredibly cool electronic track. I thought, What is this?

That song was “Polyrhythm.”

With “Polyrhythm,” Perfume burst into the mainstream. After that they held arena tours, and in 2010 they performed their first concert at the Nippon Budokan.

Then in 2011 they released the album JPN. Around that time, Japan had just experienced the 2011 Tōhoku Earthquake and Tsunami, and the album carried a sense of determination and prayer as they toured the country.

Two years later came the next album: LEVEL3.

For me, this album represents a moment when Perfume’s sound became especially sharp and powerful.

Their music is produced by Yasutaka Nakata, and I remember hearing that the group asked him to create songs that would really explode during live performances. The result was an album packed with bold, high-impact electronic tracks.

By this point, Perfume had already begun performing overseas as well. So the album also feels like it’s aimed at an international audience. There are songs in English—like Spending All My Time—and overall the music has a global, dance-floor energy.

It’s an album that feels ready for the world.
