This past Saturday, September 24 2011, I was witness to the Occupy Wall Street protest that was broken up by NYPD at the corner of East 12th and 5th Avenue in Manhattan. Take a close look at this annotated video and consider for a moment its implications. Now, I must add that these protesters were violating the law. They were disrupting traffic and engaging in disorderly conduct as described in the laws of New York City. However, there is a huge gap between the conduct of the protesters and the conduct of the police. The situation was not out of control, there was no violence on the part of the protesters. In spite of this a senior NYPD officer approaches corralled protesters and willfully sprays them down with mace. As you can see in the video at no point were any of the protesters attacking or fighting with police. They were shouting it is true, but shouting at police for making forceful arrests hardly warrants the punishment they received. At no point were any of the officers involved in the corralling of protesters using the mesh nets forced to pull out their mace canisters. Instead this senior officer, Deputy Inspector Bologna simply walks up, inflicts massive harm on the individuals in the mesh corral and walks away. Never once does he look back or attempt to arrest any of the individuals. He walks away. You tell me who is in the wrong here.
