It is going to take years, not weeks, for “The Pope is from Chicago and went to college at Villanova in Philly” to stop being weird.

I’m from the US and I was very Catholic in my youth, my family is still mostly practicing Catholics, I went to Catholic school, and once I went to a youth group for a weekend and came out scary Catholic. I was super Catholic for six months, did all the work to be a Eucharistic Minister (i could give out communion at mass after the priest transubstantiate it.)

Six months later I went permanently atheist, but you can’t wash this this stuff out of you.

I never, ever imagined we would have pope from the US in my lifetime. It’s not exciting for me except for what it hopefully means politically in this moment. It’s just… dumbfounding. 217 of the 267 popes have been from Italy, y'all. It’s not diverse. There’s Europe, and there’s everyone else, and Francis being from this hemisphere was really cool, honestly!

But America?

I am believing with all my heart that these men who have, for better or worse, committed their lives to the Catholic Church said the most important thing they could do right now to reduce suffering in the world is to pick the pope who can do the most to try to stop Trump.

US Catholic facts (2024-25)

• 20% of US Adults
• 54% white, 36% Hispanic - huge shift, it was 64% white in 2007
• 29& immigrants, 14% children of immigrants
• 59% think abortion should be legal in all/most cases
• Even split on democrat/republian overall. Hispanic Catholics are much more democraft, white catholics are much more republican
• 70% support same-sex marriage - THIS IS INSANE TO BABY QUEER ME, OKAY?
• 83% want the church to allow birth control.

Now I’m sitting here dumbstruck looking at those numbers. My all afab high school had a lot of sad catholic lesbians and…. fuck, this is. I got nothing.

So anyway there’s some stats on what US Catholics are actually like.

And Bobby fron Chicago? No pope’s going to be what I want, but I think I agree with the cardinals about what the most important thing for a pope to do right now is.
