Me fudging my head with trying to get Meta Rift DK1 2 hd prototype things working with linux. On a laptop that didn’t even support this stuff on a first place, because it has no GPU.

Headsets do send the data, since OpenHMD spits it (For DK1, DK2 but not HD Prototype. Last one returns 0’s, like nothing is connected. And DK2 returns no positional tracking nor even attempts to interact with the camera.)

DK1 and HD Prototype show the desktop and get recognized as monotors.

From all of this, i can Try to get OpenHMD Unity plugin for unity 5, and try to do something, but.. eh, Unity Hub decided not to function, i got lazy and bleh. A simple setup of 2 cameras in split-screen and a script (?) fetching OHMD data in real time with some motion amplification (to avoid motion blur and lag) would make it work. Hopefully. (I don’t even know the contents of a plugin yet, these are all my guesses)

Oculus (2013)

Oculus is a horror movie for the people who watch horror movies and think, “These dummies deserve to die. I know exactly what I would do in their situation.” It has an ingenious premise, a great hook, an engaging mystery and the presentation makes even the familiar elements feel fresh.

In 2013, Tim (Brenton Thwaites) is discharged from a psychiatric hospital after he is finally able to accept that 11 years ago, his father (Rory Cochrane) went mad and terrorized him & his sister (Annalise Basso) before murdering their mother (Katee Sackhoff). Then his sister, Kaylie (Karen Gillan), reveals to him that the stories he told as a 10-year-old were true: their father was possessed to do the things he did and that an evil mirror is responsible for all that happened. Together, they’re going to prove it.

In a normal horror movie, the mirror’s evil would be revealed before the title and we’d have to sit and wait while the characters figure it out. In Oculus, Kaytie already knows the mirror is evil. She’s on the same page as us. With cameras rolling (she’s got to document this to prove he wasn’t crazy), she explains to Tim the mirror’s history and what it’s capable of and the movie expands on what she says with flashbacks. These present a somewhat familiar haunted house-type of story, but you don’t mind the familiarity because of the other half of the film. In fact, you kind of look forward to the scenes that confirm what you “already know” - it’s not enough to hear; you want to see.

Katie goes about her task scientifically. “This happened in 2011, so logically, if the scenario is duplicated, the same thing will happen again”. Her methodical approach to this supernatural object draws you in even more. Your mind goes through all of the precautions you would need for this mission to be successful. Her goal, by the way isn’t merely to prove the mirror’s powers; she also wants to destroy it. She’s hoping Tim - the one person who could believe this thing is as dangerous as she says it is - will help. To do that, she has to get him up to speed.

The protagonist being smart and going into her mission with a well-developed plan goes a long way. You relate to Kaylie because she’s horror-scenario savvy like you. There’s also a sadistic side to you – the one that chose to watch this horror movie in the first place – that wants to see what will go wrong. It’s not necessarily that you know Kaylie and her brother will fail, it’s just that it all seems a bit too well thought out; if it were “that easy” – and to be clear, all of the planning Kaytie’s done makes it clear this plan didn’t just come together overnight – a whole movie wouldn’t have to be dedicated to this mirror.

Another thing the movie does right is the mirror itself. Where did it come from? We never find out. What does it want? We’re not sure either. We know it’s sinister and the things it’s done/caused say a lot, but we’re never explicitly told via a montage with microfiches and newspaper articles that the mirror – who isn’t even named, which is too bad, because it’s such a great “character” – wants X. We learn a lot about its history and its abilities are slowly revealed frighteningly but a lot is left unknown. That makes it even more dangerous than it initially seemed. You realize how daunting a task just revealing to the world that this thing is evil will be. Destroying it? That’ll be a whole other equation to solve.

The last thing to highlight is the presentation. In 2013, Kaytie asks her brother to try and remember what really happened. For him, the details are vague – that’s what years of psychiatrists telling you what you saw was an illusion will do to you. As Kaytie proves what she knows about the mirror and its abilities, he starts to recall. We get to see his memories through the scenes set in the past. As time passes, we get deeper into the flashback and closer to what we know: that Kaytie and Tim’s father will try to kill them. The memories become more vivid as we get closer to that one night that changed everything. Or maybe because the mirror’s strength is continuously increasing. Reality starts to bend and warp until – like our heroes – you’re unable to distinguish between truth and reality anymore. You were already relating to the characters at the beginning of the film. Now, you’re basically living through the same thing they are.

All of the information we get from the mirror make it clear that Oculus could be far more than just a one-and-done (and Mike Flannagan has shown with Ouija : Origin of Evil that he knows how to do the prequel thing right) but if this is all we get, that’s totally fine. There might be an element of the conclusion that you can see coming further ahead than intended (my one criticism, really), but the innovations within the picture more than make up for it. (On DVD, October 17, 2025)

In the past, OpenDoc, a technology developed by Apple to realize compound document and document-centered operation, was available.

Can we extend this technology to shift from a document-centric to a gesture-centric interface?

If you want to work on a larger screen from your smartphone, iPhone, or iPad with a user interface by wearing the Oculus Dash or HoloLens from Oculus Quest

It was usual to use a computer with a large screen, but now it is possible to use a huge screen! However, there were limits to the amount of money and placement of the display.

Seamlessly linked together, there will be no spatial limits, and you’ll be able to work in a small room with any number of huge, large screens that you can place anywhere in 360 degrees!

For example, even if it is not possible to display 3D without wearing glasses like the gesture interface in the sci-fi movie “Iron Man”…

It may be possible to “make it look realistic by wearing special glasses” such as Oculus Dash and HoloLens in Oculus Quest, so…

It would be fun to display the setting panel of a simple function device that you touch through the special glasses as if it pops up from inside the device in CG in a hologram format (image: Genie Effect on Mac)
