Masterstroke

Backed into the corner of my mind,
righting the indignities I find there, stalking.
There’s another fraught indelicacy to fight off,
while the frost settles in and sets me down,
beginning to drown out the noise,
the dripping wetness of poise I’m teetering on,
fallow fools of mindless triggers, these
particular pockets of newfound sanity oblige.
I’ll rise - some new figure from the ash
of what’s been burning on the pyre tonight.

Mr Wickham creates rumours

Lizzy learns rumours of Mr Wickham’s behaviour in a letter from Darcy after his first disastrous proposal. She has a wee “struggle,” partly she thinks because he’d flattered her as Darcy had not, but realises she doesn’t know his “real character.” It’s only when Lizzy reads Mr Darcy’s letter and recalls her first conversation with Mr Wickham where he laid out his rumour of how Darcy had treated him that she is

“…struck with the impropriety of such communications to a stranger… he had boasted of having no fear of seeing Mr. Darcy… yet he had avoided the Netherfield ball the very next week. …till the Netherfield family had quitted the country, he had told his story to no one but herself; but that after their removal, it had been everywhere discussed; that he had then no reserves, no scruples in sinking Mr. Darcy’s character, though he had assured her that respect for the father would always prevent his exposing the son.”

Jane Austen, Pride and Prejudice, C36

So he only starts rumours when he feels relatively safe of their lack of truth being discovered. When Wickham elopes with Lydia Bennet rumours start to swirl about him.

“All Meryton seemed striving to blacken the man who, but three months before, had been almost an angel of light. He was declared to be in debt to every tradesman in the place, and his intrigues, all honoured with the title of seduction, had been extended into every tradesman’s family.”

Jane Austen, Pride and Prejudice, C48

It’s never clear whether the seductions were accurate, but the debts appear to be, as he provides Mr Gardiner with a list of debtors to satisfy. The things Darcy tells Elizabeth in the letter appear to also be true. As Lizzy notes Wickham did note in their first conversation that they had grown up together and Darcy is a good brother, they may be the only true things he conveyed.

The lyric following this selection could also apply to Wickham:

“I could build a castle
Out of all the bricks they threw at me”

Taylor Swift, New Romantics

Not only are people talking about him or hurling bricks at his character, enough to build a castle, he manages to use the bad situation he’s got himself into to his advantage - to build himself a castle. He may have to marry Lydia Bennet but he manages to get Darcy to pay off his debts and buy him a new commission plus now they’re brothers so there’s always the future potential. We learn in the last chapter that Wickham himself never asks for money, or at least that we know of, but Lydia has no qualms about asking both of her eldest sisters for money frequently.

Glistened

Treasure me, sanctifying this dirt.

From formulations of hurt & pain,

lives lived in the overarching stain of bitterness,

some new growth, gallant from the soil, teems -

I’ve rustled and writhed beneath guilt for so long,

what those wrongs taught was buried -

lost to a cold-hearted ignorance, perpetuated.

But now - - but how these wounds are healing!

Free to find a nerve center of feeling again,

I raise my head to the sky to thank the heavens.

In the early 80s, I briefly stayed with Judith Frankland @judithfrankland in London, a fantastic designer who made outfits for Steve Strange and appeared in David Bowie’s “Ashes To Ashes” video alongside Bowie himself with other “Blitz Kids” and fashion luminaries, Steve Strange, Darla Jane Gilroy and Elise Brazier. She told me tales of the Blitz Club and of her days of designing for Steve Strange and using him as her model. The Blitz Club was in Covent Garden, London from 1979 - 80 and was home to the “Blitz Kids” who were nightclubbers there on Tuesday nights. The club was located between two art colleges (St. Martins and Central School). As a result of its proximity to the art colleges, it attracted many students who were aspiring fashion designers there. The hosts were Steve Strange and Rusty Egan @rustyegan of Visage and the club was responsible for launching the New Romantic movement in London. Many notable fashionistas and dandies who later became big stars, were regulars there. A dress code of the “the weird and wonderful” was strictly enforced at the door, a policy that was put in place by Steve Strange. This was not an elitist system like Studio 54 in NYC, but rather for the protection of the nightclubbing guests against homophobic thugs. The hosts had previously done “Roxy Music and David Bowie nights” on Tuesdays at Billy’s club in Soho and later took over at the Blitz wine bar which gained much better success as an iconic club. David Bowie, gender-bending, cutting edge fashion and a desire to express it with rebellious fervor, were the common themes and passions of the Blitz Kids and the New Romantics. Some other noteworthy attendees aside from the aforementioned included Boy George, Marilyn, Siobhan Fahey, Sade, Spandau Ballet, Midge Ure, Philip Sallon, Stephen Linard, Stephen Jones, Princess Julia, Martin Degville, Scarlet Cannon, i-D magazine co-editor Perry Haines, and many others. Derek Ridgers @derekridgers, Andrew Holligan and Terry Smith were responsible for most of the photos… 📷 1/10: Sheila Rock @sheila_rock_photographer

“It takes a DREADFUL type of person to always see the light in a situation-” her mind flickered to her mother and father, both optimists in their own way, something that drove her insane little by little. “I think there’s an EDGE someone has by always seeing the glass half empty. Perhaps they’re less likely to CRY if it were to tip over-”

和訳してみた Taylor Swift - New Romantics

ブログ更新しました(=゚ω゚)ノ
『和訳してみた Taylor Swift - New Romantics』

New Romantics

We’re all bored, we’re all so tired of everything
We wait for trains that just aren’t coming
We show off our different scarlet letters
Trust me, mine is better

“We” is used when referring to herself and another person. Their gender is not specified. They both have “different scarlet letters” which in my opinion could mean sexualities. Bisexual, lesbian, pansexual - there are various “letters” in the LGBT community. Taylor speaks of boredom, tiredness and “trains that just aren’t coming”

We’re so young but we’re on the road to ruin
We play dumb but we know exactly what we’re doing
We cry tears of mascara in the bathroom
Honey, life is just a classroom

Taylor Swift and another person are crying tears of mascara in a bathroom. I don’t know about you but that gives me an image of two women. “We play dumb but we know exactly what we’re doing” could mean playing off their relationship as a friendship ie. glass closeting.

‘Cause baby, I could build a castle
Out of all the bricks they threw at me
And every day is like a battle
But every night with us is like a dream

Baby, we’re the new romantics
Come on, come along with me
Heartbreak is the national anthem
We sing it proudly
We are too busy dancing
To get knocked off our feet
Baby, we’re the new romantics
The best people in life are free

Taylor Swift is painting a vivid picture about how much judgement she receives. She could build a castle out of the bricks thrown at her. It doesn’t matter to her though because nights with her partner are like a dream. They know that heartbreak is the “national anthem” but they’re too busy dancing and singing proudly. She finishes the chorus by stating “The best people in life are free”

We’re all here, the lights and noise are blinding
We hang back, it’s all in the timing
It’s poker, he can’t see it in my face
But I’m about to play my Ace

Taylor’s usage of we/us and he indicates there is another person involved. In my opinion this song takes place in a nightclub or bar of some kind. With all of the lights and noise she places great importance on hanging back and the timing. She maintains her poker face to a man. There is something she’s about to do, she’s about to play her Ace.

We need love, but all we want is danger
We team up then switch sides like a record changer
The rumors are terrible and cruel
But, honey, most of them are true

In my opinion the lines “I’m about to play my Ace” and “We team up then switch sides like a record changer” are related. It can easily be interpreted as a bearding situation where Taylor Swift needs to maintain a heterosexual image. She also states that most of the rumours are true.

Please take my hand and
Please take me dancing and
Please leave me stranded
It’s so romantic (it’s so romantic)
(Ah, ah, ah, ah, ah, ah)

This could be interpreted as her and her partner holding hands, dancing, etc and then pulling away (left stranded) when it’s necessary to remain closeted.

There are two explanations that would make this song make sense. 1) she is queer or 2) she is cheating on her partner. Considering this song was released in 2014 and her public relationships never had elements of cheating I believe the first is most likely

Scarlet Letter

What is a scarlet letter? It is a reference to the book “The Scarlet Letter” by Nathaniel Hawthorne. The book explores themes of legalism, sin, and guilt. A young woman called Hester Prynne gave birth to a baby of unknown parentage and is therefore punished. Her punishment requires her to stand on a scaffold for three hours, exposed to public humiliation, and to wear the scarlet “A” for the rest of her life. The major theme of the book is shaming and social stigmatisation.

We’re all bored, we’re all so tired of everything
We wait for trains that just aren’t coming
We show off our different scarlet letters
Trust me, mine is better

Lyrics from New Romantics

‘Cause you were Romeo, I was a scarlet letter
And my daddy said, “Stay away from Juliet”
But you were everything to me
I was begging you, “Please don’t go,” and I said

Lyrics from Love Story

It’s interesting that Taylor Swift used this reference on two seperate occasions. “We show off our different scarlet letters” could be interpreted as her and another person having different social stigmas. In my opinion, New Romantics is a very queer song however that will require a seperate post. She once again uses the term in Love Story with the lyric “I was a scarlet letter” when it doesn’t make much sense in the context of the song. Once again, Love Story will require a seperate post to fully interpret the song. I just wanted to have a post specifically about her usage of this term.

Happy Birthday Simon Le Bon ! I took these Polaroids at my store Vinyl Fetish when Duran Duran came to LA for the first time & played the Roxy. They signed their first album and greeted their hardcore Southern California fans, Melrose was packed with them that day. For years afterwards fans would come into the store and point to the floor where they stood and met them. We were big supporters of them since they were part of the first wave of New Romantic English bands that we played on Kroq and our club The Veil. #simonlebon #simonlebonduranduran #duranduran #planetearth #newromantics #vinylfetish #newsoundsnewstyles (at Los Angeles, California)
