Hey everyone, moving to bluesky for now until tumblr gets rid of the new reblog update!

Decided to give your ai slop bores me a try and it’s so fun! I wrote this prompt and I did NOT expect such a specific answer lol. So there’s another Daisy fan on that website. If you’re on tumblr too, hi! This is something I’ve actually wanted to discuss for a while. As much as I hate racism, what you say ISN’T true. I know there was a YouTube short that said she got whitewashed because of 9/11 but I believe otherwise and this is why:
[[MORE]]Daisy debuted in 1989’s Super Mario Land, a Game Boy game. Due to graphic limitations only four shades of grey can be displayed in any game on that console. So the first time we ever see Daisy INSIDE a game, her skin tone is the same as Mario’s:

A very valid argument here would be, “they can’t have different skin colours because of the graphic limitations!” which is correct. However, she’s white in her official artwork too.

Daisy’s kingdom, Sarasaland, is split up into four countries, each of which is based on a real life location:
1. Muda Kingdom, which is based on Bermuda,
2. Easton Kingdom, which is based on Easter Island,
3. Chai Kingdom, which is based on (mythical, according to the MarioWiki) ancient China, and last but definitely not least,
4. Birabuto Kingdom, which is based on ancient Egypt.
The first one Mario goes through is Birabuto, and it’s the one most fans associate Daisy with. In fact, I think it’s also the one Nintendo decided to associate her with as I’ll discuss later. But my point is, even though Egypt is in the Middle East, the other three locations Sarasaland is based on are not. So she’s probably one-fourth Middle Eastern if that’s how we’re judging.
The next time we see Daisy is in 1991’s NES Open Tournament Golf, where she really only appears as a distinct character in the official artwork and on the title screen, the latter in which she’s blonde and wearing the wrong colours, which I believe, is again due to graphic limitations, so I’ll only bring up the artwork. In-game I think she’s indistinguishable from Peach but I’m not sure as I’ve never played it. Here’s what she looks like standing by Luigi!

Again, she’s white.
After this, Daisy doesn’t appear in any video game for the rest of the 90s. Nine years later, in 2000, Nintendo decided to bring her back so that there could be more human characters and a partner for Luigi in Mario Tennis for the Nintendo 64. Now HERE’S her appearance that most people think she started with:

Now you can see the tan. But, there’s a bit of a debate here too, because some people say she has the same skin tone as Mario and Luigi but no one brings it up for those two. They say it’s just the lighting. But, to be fair, I’ll bring up Peach’s alternate outfits from Super Smash Bros. Melee (2001), where her skin is noticeably darker when she’s wearing Daisy’s outfit.

This game is Daisy’s last appearance in her old design. She makes a cameo appearance as a trophy (also the source of the infamous third eye!) but isn’t a playable character on her own. This game released on November 21, 2001 in Japan and December 3rd on the same year in the United States, which is still way too close to 9/11. Now Daisy wasn’t an important character back then. This was her 7th appearance in a video game ever. And like I said earlier, she’s not even playable. Nintendo could’ve easily either swapped her skin texture for a lighter one or removed her from the game entirely if they thought she’d be viewed as problematic or become a controversy.
Her next appearance is in Mario Party 4 (2002), where she’s been redesigned and in addition to the shorter hair and different dress, her skin is now the same colour as Peach’s.

Now, if Daisy had debuted in Mario Tennis with her tanned skin I would call this whitewashing, except she didn’t, and so I’d say it’s more of just reimagining her in general. Is it possible that someone who worked in character design thought she’d be problematic if she was Middle Eastern? Maybe. But it’s just a speculation, not a fact. The real reason could be ANYTHING. I once read a theory that claimed that Daisy was only tan back in the day to look different from Peach, but after redesigning her in the GameCube era that wasn’t needed anymore.
(Oh, and here’s something a little unrelated that I wanted to bring up. Notice the roof of Daisy’s present room from Mario Party 4? It resembles her castle’s from an old Mario manga. I thought it was neat. A few years back I looked at it and thought it would be funny if Nintendo brought it up ever again. If only I knew…)

For the next nineteen years, Daisy’s quite consistent with her design, but in 2021, Nintendo released Mario Golf: Super Rush, where her skin is darker than the other human characters.

Then again later that year, she appears in Mario Party Superstars, where her model has DEFINITELY been altered to change her skin colour. Compare these two models that were three years apart:

After that she becomes a little paler again (can’t see any difference in her skin colour in Super Mario Bros. Wonder but maybe that’s just me) but Mario Kart World (2025) plays a huge role in this discussion. Shy Guy Bazaar, a track from Mario Kart 7, is brought back as a retro track, and… Daisy-fied?

I don’t think that palace was there in the original track but it’s been a while since I’ve seen it. I wouldn’t say the track is now based on Egypt, but just the Middle East in general, and I think it’s quite obvious there was some inspiration from Disney’s Aladdin here. Daisy and Luigi’s Oasis outfits are similar to Jasmine’s and Aladdin’s, except for Luigi we all know he’s Italian so he’s probably just doing it to match with Daisy. Daisy’s the one who has links to ancient Egypt, but like I said, I don’t think this was based on any country in particular. I think the credits of this game also refers to Daisy as a ‘desert princess’. (Also, Google says the palace in Aladdin is based off the Taj Mahal, which is in India. While I know this has nothing to do with Mario it does look a bit similar to Daisy’s castle…)
What I think Nintendo is trying to do is give Daisy some more lore (which is quite overdue if you ask me ;)). However, there’s been no mention of any of the other countries Sarasaland is based on so it’s possible that 1. We have more to see in the future (just wishful thinking lmao), 2. Birabuto might be the capital or ‘most important’ part of Sarasaland, or 3. It’s a retcon of sorts (I HATE retcons personally >-<). Whatever it may be, let’s hope Nintendo sticks to a good representation of Daisy rather than switching back and forth!
(Also, I think it’s worth mentioning that Middle Easterns CAN be white.)
If you disagree with me or if there’s anything I missed, I’d be glad to have a respectful conversation on this matter. I do love talking about Daisy, after all. And if you’ve made it this far, thank you so much for reading! :D
