Although this doesn’t have much to do with what we are learning about currently, reproductive rights are always an issue. I am a member of Douglass Friends of UNFPA and I attended the Global Summit on women’s health in the 21st century today, one reoccurring issue is reproductive justice–the ability to make educated decisions about our bodies and selves in terms of when, and if, we have a child. Even though family planning, which includes abortion, is a basic human right and was part of the Millennium Development Goals, people still fight the availability of family planning. As someone who believes in family planning, I have come to see a trend in those who don’t. More often than not, people who disagree with family planning feel the way they do because of religious beliefs (I am absolutely not saying that all religious people feel this way). And although I think everyone should be entitled to their own beliefs, I am not sure if those against family planning feel the same way. Family planning gives people options, they are not forced to do anything they do not want to do, but those who are against family planning are taking away the options for individuals as well as disallowing people to feel and think the way they do–this to me is unconstitutional. Furthermore, their beliefs oftentimes stem from religious backgrounds, whether they are aware of it or not, which again to me is unconstitutional as it exhibits entirely un-secular government. I would never force someone to utilize family planning, but is it wrong for me to expect that people give me the opportunity to chose for myself as well?
Body image is certainly a touchy subject, but why does it have to be? Shouldn’t we all be happy with who we are and spend our time worrying about things more important? Unfortunately the media plays a huge part in how people feel about themselves–which oftentimes leads to self-deprecation. As someone who has suffered the harsh side effects of current media, I wonder how our society can continue on without something being done. But what can be done? Should we inhibit companies from photoshopping adds? Or simply have them state when Photoshop is used? I don’t have any answers, but I hope our society finds some soon.
